"5 - 4 - 3 - 2 -1" is a simple grounding technique children can use in times of emotional distress or overload. The technique works through calming anxiety and intense emotions through bringing our attention to our 5 senses and grounding us in the present moment.

The Mindfully Me Program is full of life long tips and tricks children can use and add to their emotional toolbox to build resilience and emotional intelligence.

For more information on the Mindfully Me Program starting Week 2 of Term 1, inbox us or email us at [email protected]

One focus of Mindfully Me Groups is helping children to be more ‘in tune’ with their emotions.

Children are often overwhelmed by what they are feeling, particularly when they are unable to identify what it is. Giving children the vocabulary to understand and express what they're feeling can reduce emotional dysregulation and encourage open and honest discussion.

In Mindfully Me Groups each week we start with an activity in which we identify what we are feeling in the present moment. In doing this we are building on and practicing the vocabulary children have available to express what they are feeling.

Additionally through modelling we demonstrate to children that there are no ‘bad feelings’ and it is ok to experience the full spectrum of emotions. This can be particularly empowering for children who feel shame around persistent feelings of worry and anxiety.

If you would like your child to build on their emotional intelligence and encourage open and honest discussion of feelings, inbox us or email is at [email protected].

Happy New Year!

I hope everyone had a wonderful year despite the madness of 2021.

I wish you happiness in the New Year and luck with achieving all your 2022 goals. But would like to gently remind you that even if all you do is get through the year, you are still loved exactly as you are.

Self growth and development is incredible, but reject the notion you have to change in order to be worthy. Your productivity does not equal your worth and you are a wonderful human regardless of whether or not you achieve those New Year's Resolutions.

Everyone has a ‘window of tolerance’, a state of optimal physical and emotional arousal. When a child is within their window of tolerance they can think, learn, play and relate to others.

If a child is pushed outside their window of tolerance their behaviour becomes disrupted by intensified physiological and emotional arousal. They enter hypo-arousal or hyper-arousal.

Children all have different windows/rainbows due to a variety of factors. Sometimes the size of their windows can change due to day to day stressors. The ‘wider’ they can make their windows the less likely they are to experience extremes of hypo-arousal or hyper-arousal.

One way children can ‘widen their windows’ is engaging in mindfulness and meditation. This is achieved through helping children develop self awareness and with this greater levels of adaptability, flexibility and independence. In doing this they give themselves greater opportunity to be resilient, calm and focused.

Mindfully Me helps children practice these skills as well as provides them with skills to bring them back into their ‘window of tolerance’ when they find themselves in hypo or hyper-arousal.

With the current stressors of our world you may have noticed a pattern of increased emotional dysregulation in your child.

There is a simple model that in part explains this, known as the ‘Hand model of the Brain’. This model was developed by Dr. Dan Siegel a clinical professor in psychiatry who explains emotional dysregulation as ‘flipping your lid’.

Teaching children to understand what it means to ‘flip your lid’ and why it happens allows us to normalise intense feelings like anger, worry and anxiety. In doing this we can teach children how to manage these feelings. Skills in mediation and mindfulness have been proven to be a great way of helping children manage these intense emotions in a healthy way.

Giving children the vocabulary and knowledge to understand, express and manage their feelings is very empowering and builds their confidence in navigating our complex world.

Mindfully Me Groups are a great way to help your child build on and strengthen these skills.
