WORLD INFORMATION SOCIETY DAY
World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (W.T.I.S.D.) is celebrated every year on May 17 to raise global awareness of the potential that the Internet and information and communication technology (I.C.T.) can bring to society and the economy. It’s also to help raise awareness of ways to bridge the digital divide. The Internet and I.C.T. have proven to be essential in facing the world’s challenges in the digital era. And global cooperation is required to decrease the digital divide so that all can access new technologies and connect.
HISTORY OF WORLD INFORMATION SOCIETY DAY
World Telecommunication Day was first celebrated on May 17, 1969. It’s to mark the founding of the International Telecommunication Union and the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention in 1865. In March 2006, the U.N. General Assembly proclaimed May 17 annual World Information Society Day. In November 2006, the I.T.U. Plenipotentiary Conference in Antalya, Turkey, decided to celebrate both telecommunication day and information society day on May 17 as World Telecommunication and Information Society Day.
I.T.U. is a specialized agency of the United Nations in charge of things related to information and communication technology. Being the oldest U.N. agency, it was established as the International Telegraph Union. At first, I.T.U. was aimed at helping connect telegraphic networks between nations. I.T.U. later adopted the name International Telecommunication Union in 1934 due to its expanded responsibilities over radio and telephone. I.T.U. agreed with the United Nations to become a specialized agency in the United Nations System on November 15, 1947, which came into force on January 1, 1949.
I.T.U’s based in Geneva, Switzerland, and its global membership includes 193 Member States and around 900 international and regional organizations, companies, and universities. Its work involves allocating global radio spectrum and satellite orbits, developing technical standards, and improving access to I.C.T. for all underserved communities. Besides, I.T.U. does work for amateur radio, radio astronomy, broadband, wireless technologies, and next-generation networks. We are benefitting from I.T.U’s work, such as making phone calls via mobile, accessing the internet, and emailing.
Mother's Day – May 14, 2023
Mother's Day is a special day celebrated in many countries around the world to honor and appreciate mothers and mother figures. It is typically observed on the second Sunday of May each year. Mother's Day is a time for people to express their love, gratitude, and respect for their mothers, grandmothers, stepmothers, and other maternal figures in their lives.
The origins of Mother's Day can be traced back to ancient times when festivals were held in honor of mother goddesses. However, the modern concept of Mother's Day as we know it today originated in the early 20th century. It was largely promoted by Anna Jarvis, an American activist, who wanted to establish a holiday to honor her own mother and recognize the contributions of mothers in society.
On Mother's Day, people often show their appreciation through various gestures such as giving gifts, sending cards, preparing meals, or spending quality time with their mothers. It is also common to see floral arrangements, particularly carnations, being gifted to mothers as a symbol of love and gratitude.
While the specific traditions and customs may vary from country to country, the underlying theme of Mother's Day remains the same—to acknowledge and celebrate the love and sacrifices of mothers and motherly figures in our lives. It is a day to express our heartfelt appreciation and make our mothers feel special and loved.
World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day
World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day is observed annually on May 8th to celebrate the principles of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and to honor the volunteers and staff who carry out its humanitarian work around the world.
The Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is a global humanitarian organization that provides assistance to people affected by natural disasters, conflicts, and other crises. It was founded in 1863 by Swiss businessman Henry Dunant, who was moved by the suffering he witnessed on a battlefield in Italy. Today, the movement includes the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), and 192 National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
The theme for World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day 2023 is "Stronger Together," highlighting the importance of collaboration and solidarity in addressing global challenges. It recognizes the essential role of Red Cross and Red Crescent volunteers and staff in responding to emergencies and providing humanitarian assistance, as well as the need for partnerships with governments, civil society, and other stakeholders to address complex and interconnected issues such as climate change, migration, and health crises.
On this day, events and activities are organized around the world to raise awareness of the work of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, to encourage support for its programs and services, and to honor the contributions of its volunteers and staff.
International Firefighters Day
******************************
International Firefighters Day is observed every year on May 4th to honor the brave men and women who risk their lives every day to protect their communities from fire and other emergencies. This day is a tribute to the dedication, sacrifice, and bravery of firefighters all around the world.
HISTORY OF INTERNATIONAL FIREFIGHTERS DAY
The first International Firefighters Day was observed on May 4th, 1999, in honor of five Australian firefighters who lost their lives while battling a massive bushfire in Linton, Victoria, in 1998. Since then, the day has been celebrated annually as a way to recognize and appreciate the critical role firefighters play in safeguarding our lives and property.
Firefighters are among the most selfless individuals, who put their lives on the line to save others. They work tirelessly in extreme conditions, risking their lives to rescue people and animals from burning buildings, accidents, and other disasters. They also respond to other emergencies, including natural disasters such as floods, hurricanes, and earthquakes.
International Firefighters Day is an opportunity to recognize and appreciate the heroic efforts of firefighters worldwide. It is a day to thank them for their dedication and selfless service and to acknowledge the risks they take to protect us. We must also remember that firefighters need our support in their work, which includes ensuring that they have the resources, training, and equipment needed to do their job safely and effectively.
In conclusion, International Firefighters Day is a reminder of the invaluable contributions that firefighters make to our society. It is a day to honor and thank these brave men and women for their unwavering commitment to keeping us safe. Let us take a moment to appreciate and celebrate these courageous individuals and all that they do for us.
World Press Freedom Day
*****************************
World Press Freedom Day is annually observed on May 3. It is a day to recognize the important service provided by press professionals. It is commemorated by the United Nations to observe the fundamental principles of press freedom worldwide. By celebrating World Press Freedom Day, journalists and democracy advocates contribute to defending the freedom of speech, access to information, and the independence of the media, all of which suffer constant attacks worldwide. This day also honors the journalists who have been killed in the name of their profession.
HISTORY OF WORLD PRESS FREEDOM DAY
*****************************
Journalists are essential to bringing the facts, revealing the truth to the public, and maintaining awareness and transparency. Because they bother the powerful and enemies of democracy so much, journalists are frequent targets of attacks, and many are murdered. After a series of attacks on journalists during the African Civil Wars at the end of the 20th century, they decided to take action.
In 1991, a group of African journalists appealed at a UNESCO conference held in Namibia’s capital, Windhoek. They created the “Windhoek Declaration,” a document that intended to lay the foundation for a free, independent, and pluralist press. In 1993, the 26th session of the UNESCO General Conference responded to the call of the signatories of the Windhoek Declaration and founded World Press Freedom Day.
The central principle developed by UNESCO for the day is freedom of the press and of expression, to allow communication-based on mutual understanding, which is the only way to build sustainable peace in contemporary societies. The observance serves as a reminder that even today, dozens of countries around the world censor, fine, suspend, and close publications that displease the powerful locals. Many persecute, attack, and even murder members of the press.

National Computer Security Day – November 30, 2022
>
National Computer Security Day demands our attention every November 30 because cyber security affects everything from where we bank and how we spend our money to who we elect to public office. We certainly don’t want a replay of MyDoom, the worst email virus in history, which caused $38.5 billion in damage, so let’s get educated on staying safe online!
💡 HISTORY OF NATIONAL COMPUTER SECURITY DAY
>
📌 It seems like everyday we hear about breaches in cyber security. Keeping people and companies safe online is a top priority all over the world. It’s something that stays uppermost in our minds on National Computer Security Day. The story of National Computer Security Day is an interesting one.
📌 On November 2, 1988, Cornell University researchers uncovered an unknown virus lurking in their computer systems. Within four hours of discovery, the “Morris worm” virus invaded several other university systems as well as the ARPANET, an early version of today’s internet.
📌 Six days later, two computer experts with the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) recommended assembling a “National Computer Infection Action Team” (NCAT) to respond 24/7, 365 to these kinds of attacks. On November 14, the Software Engineering Institute (SEI), a research center connected with Carnegie Mellon University, set up the Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT).
📌 In 1988, the National Computer Security Day sprang out of the Washington, D.C., chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery’s (ACM) Special Interest Group on Security, Audit, and Control as a way to raise awareness about cyber crimes and viruses. According to a 2004 “Networld” article, “November 30 was chosen for CSD so that attention on computer security would remain high during the holiday season – when people are typically more focused on the busy shopping season than thwarting security threats.” By 2003, CERT and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security joined forces to create the National Cyber Awareness System.
📌 Whether we’re talking about National Computer Security Day or National Cybersecurity Awareness Month also in October, the goals are essentially the same. Each person must be proactive to protect their online security. Use this month to find out all you can about common sense ways to stay safe in cyberspace.

Electronic Greetings Day – November 29, 2022
Electronic Greetings Day is on November 29, and we celebrate by sending e-cards to every person on our contact list that we haven’t chatted with in a while. Can you imagine that only 5% of Americans were on social media in 2005? E-cards, also known as electronic cards, are digital greeting cards or postcards created using digital media. These cards are usually sent via email or social media and don’t require the recipient to print them out. E-cards can contain animation and text and are of various types, including video e-cards, e-cards games, mobile e-cards, and flash animation.
💡 HISTORY OF ELECTRONIC GREETINGS DAY
📌 While the telegraph, invented in the late 19th century, marked the beginning of innovation in communications technology, it was when the internet arrived a century later that social media became possible. The first social media variant, the PLATO system, was launched in 1960. The system entered the market while the first iteration of the internet, the ARPANET, was still in the works. The PLATO system offered a message-forum application (Notes), an instant messaging feature (TERM-talk), an online chat room (Talkomatic), and more.
📌 In 1967, the ARPANET came online and evolved into the internet in the 1970s. That was followed by the introduction of personal computers (P.C.s) in the 1980s. Both of these inventions set the stage for the development of social media in the 1990s and beyond.
📌 In November 1994, one of the earliest social networking services, GeoCities, entered the market. Close behind it was Classmates, launched in 1995, and then SixDegrees, the first online platform that allowed the use of real names, in 1997. SixDegrees is considered the first social networking site as it allowed people to sign up with their email, great profiles, and add friends to their personal network.
📌 The 2000s saw the explosion of social media platforms, including LinkedIn, MySpace, and Friendster. Platforms like Photobucket and Flickr introduced online photo sharing, and YouTube revolutionized how videos are shared online. In 2006, Facebook and Twitter took the world by storm, becoming the two most popular social media platforms in the world. Between 2009 and the 2010s, the world saw the introduction of WhatsApp, Instagram, and Snapchat, allowing photo and video sharing. In 2020, at the height of the pandemic, TikTok became well known, quickly becoming popular among millennials and Gen Zs.

National Entrepreneur's Day – November 15, 2022
National Entrepreneur’s Day is an annual event occurring on the third Tuesday of November (November 15) that honors people who have built an empire from absolutely nothing. Radical inventions by brilliant minds have shaped the way we live today, not to mention our future.
💡 HISTORY OF NATIONAL ENTREPRENEUR'S DAY
The word entrepreneur comes from the French word entreprendre, meaning “undertake.” It first appeared in the French dictionary “Dictionnaire Universel de Commerce,” produced by Jacques des Bruslons and published in 1723. The study of entrepreneurship stems from Irish-French economist Richard Cantillon back in the late 17th and early 18th century. He defined the term entrepreneur in his book “Essay on the Nature of Trade in General” as a person who pays a certain price for a product and resells it at an uncertain price.
Cantillon emphasized the willingness of the entrepreneur to take on the risk and deal with the uncertainty — thus distinguishing the difference between the entrepreneur and the investor. Another French economist, Jean-Baptiste Say, identified entrepreneurs as drivers for economic development, emphasizing their role as one of the collecting factors of production. Say and Cantillon both belonged to the French school of thought and are known as the physiocrats.
In the 1930s economist Joseph Schumpeter defined an entrepreneur as someone willing and able to convert a new idea or invention into a successful innovation. For him, entrepreneurship resulted in new industries and combinations of currently existing inputs. His example of this was the combination of the steam engine and the wagon in order to produce the horseless carriage.
In 2010 entrepreneur Siamak Taghaddos started a petition to create a National Entrepreneur’s Day. He didn’t understand how America, though considered the most entrepreneurial country in the world, didn’t already have a day dedicated to recognizing entrepreneurs. Six months and thousands of signatures later, President Obama proclaimed the last day of 2010’s National Entrepreneur Week as National Entrepreneur’s Day.

Smart Home Day, observed on November 3 every year, focuses on the technology behind the smart home which is one equipped with and controlled by the use of a home automation system. This form of mechanization monitors and controls aspects of the house such as lighting, temperature, and appliances. Smart homes typically also include home security such as access control, remote monitoring, and alarm systems.
💡 HISTORY OF SMART HOME DAY
📝 The earliest form of home automation was labor-saving machines. As time advanced, self-contained/ self-powered electric devices, as well as gas-powered home appliances, became a regular feature. This development began in the 1900s with the introduction of electric power distribution, further birthing the invention and commercialization of appliances such as washing machines, water heaters, and refrigerators, among others.
The year 1975 saw the introduction and development of the first general-purpose home automation network technology, known as the X10. The X10 is a communication protocol for electronic devices, which uses power transmission wiring for signaling and general control, with signals comprising radio frequency spasms of digital data. In 1978, three years after its launch, X10 products came with 16-channel command consoles and an appliance module.
In 2011, tech giant Microsoft Research discovered that the innovation of home automation could be limited in relevance by the high cost of ownership, a lack of flexibility of interconnected devices, and poor manageability. Since this information was made public, designers and engineers now take factors such as scalability, how well the devices can be monitored and controlled, ease of installation and use for the consumer, affordability, speed, security, and ability to diagnose issues when building modern home automation systems.
As of 2012, an A.B.I. research report stated that the United States had recorded 1.5 million installations of home automation systems.

National Internet Day – October 29, 2022
National Internet Day is October 29 and looking back at AOL’s quaint “You’ve got mail” ads circa 1997, few could imagine what the internet would mean all these years later. We loved this new thing called “email,” but could we imagine booking entire overseas vacations on our phones at 3 am? Or something called Instagram? Or the web’s worldwide implications? Let’s take a moment to look back at how it all happened — and what’s coming next.
History Of National Internet Day:
October 29, 1969. Charley Kline, a young grad student on the UCLA campus attempts to send the first internet message to his colleague, Bill Duvall, at Stanford. They’re working on something called ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network), the U.S. Defense Department-funded network that connected four terminals installed at UCLA, Stanford, UC Santa Barbara, and the University of Utah.
They succeeded — sort of — in their attempt to send the word “LOGIN.”
Charley Kline: “So I’m on the phone and I type the L and say, ‘OK, I typed in L, you got that?’ Bill Duvall, the guy at Stanford, is watching his monitor and he has the L. I type the O. Got the O. Typed the G. ‘Wait a minute,’ Bill says, ‘my system crashed. I’ll call you back.'” An hour later, under the watchful eye of UCLA computer science professor Leonard Kleinrock, Kline was able to send the complete “LOGIN” message.
Another man, a computer scientist named Joseph Licklider, also deserves credit for being an internet pioneer with an early vision of a worldwide computer network long before it was built. Today he’s known as “computing’s Johnny Appleseed.”
It’s impossible to calculate the effect of the Internet on society as a whole. That’s like trying to figure out how the telephone and printing press changed the world. We started with chat rooms, email programs, and some basic websites and wound up in the midst of a cultural revolution. Today we’ve got mail — along with access to infinite possibilities — in our back pockets. Literally.

📌 National Cyber Security Awareness Month October 2022
✅ Get an anti-virus program
✅ Update your passwords
✅ Never use your pet’s name on your password or security question
✅ Make sure your cyber security is tight to protect your information
📝 History of National Cyber Security Awareness Month
Starting in October, 2004, the world began to notice that Cyber Security was becoming a huge concern. The more people used the internet, the more risk there was for breaches in security. Even at that time, in the roughly ten years or so since the internet had become a public space, hackers had already started getting in where they don’t belong and cybersecurity had already become an issue. It was with these needs in mind that National Cyber Security Awareness Month was established to help foster attention for this issue that has become a critical part of pretty much everyone’s lives.
