Today is Earth Day, the day on which we reflect on how we can better care for this planet. This is also the focus of our summer school CityLAB X: The Sustainable City, but on an urban level.

With this wonderful group of passionate, engaged students, we very much enjoyed the CityLAB IX summer school in July, where we learned a lot about the complicated relationship between cities and states, guided by Stijn Oosterlynck, Peter Stabel and Iolanda Bianchi.

Now, we are into week 2 of our Sustainable City summer school, in collaboration with IMDO. We count ourselves lucky to learn from the diverse perspectives of another enthusiastic student group!

Traditioneel vakmanschap meets technologie UAntwerpen magazine. Bokrijk neemt deel aan een internationaal project rond de preservatie van traditioneel vakmanschap, zoals keramiek en mandenvlechten.

Last week, USI visiting scholar Christina Makoundou talked about safer and more sustainable materials for bikelanes and sidewalks during a lunch seminar co-organised by the Urban Studies Institute and SUPAR. Some important takeaways from her lecture:
👉Pavements are all around us, in different form;
👉They are important for mobility/movement and transportation;
⚠️BUT they also can be: 1) Safer and fall-friendly, 2) More sustainable, 3) More accessible and adaptable!
Her talk underlines multidisciplinary collaborations as well as citizen and governance involvement are needed for improving urban pavements.
