WELCOME!!!! SHOW UP in M HKA presents 22 selected artworks from the inauguration edition of the Onboards Biennale: Show Up/Show-off. The Biennale took place during the summer of '21, showing the works of 200 contemporary international artists. These artworks were displayed on billboards throughout Antwerp city, accessible to a broad audience day and night for an entire month.

The selection presented by INBOX shows works of artists with diverse artistic practices and conceptual approaches. It represents the creative vision of the participating artists, reflecting on the transformative power of public art and its impact on the urban environment. It also allows us to display a part of the artistic journey of the Onboards Biennale. Alongside the public display of 200 artworks, the Onboards Biennale 21 featured a live broadcasted symposium and weekly performances.

With works by Jürgen Addiers, Nick Andrews, Fred Bervoets, Francisca Brunet, Margot Coremans, Jan De Lauré, David De Pooter, Natacha Dimovska, Eva Donckers, Arpaïs Du Bois, Han & Mona, Emily Kelly, Flo Matthyns, Michèle Matyn, Nadia Naveau, Ekaterina Panikanova, Idris Sevenans, Jesse Tomballe, Dounya Vandamme, Shirley Villavicencio Pizango, Esther Weidenbaum, Camille Wouterson.

The opening of this INBOX presentation will take place on Thursday evening, 29 June, from 19:00 to 21:00. The INBOX space is on the fifth floor, entrance is free.

Billboard Project: the Quarantine Edition - 5th Edition

The world is confronted with an extraordinary situation. As artists, we need to contribute.

How do artists experience and look upon the Corona pandemic crisis?

A number of visual artists, including students from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp and Sint Lucas Antwerp are reacting by activating the billboards in our empty streets.

The world is transforming and adjusting, companies are changing their way of working, wars are on hold and even enemies are helping each other. History is being written. Afterwards, artists will be asked : what have you done in this historical moment to help our society ?

For this reason the Billboard Quarantine Edition project was created and this is what it stands for: we artists, we are present and this is our contribution.

The district of Antwerp is happy to support this artistic collaboration. District council for culture Femke Meeusen:“Thanks to this project, artists can share their work with the outside world during these unusual weeks. Antwerp residents can at the time enjoy art in our streets.”

This artistic initiative of the Billboard Project was created in a collaboration between artists Sanja Tomić and S***k Moons, the District of Antwerp, Agrafa Affichage and Print Alert.

The Billboard Project Antwerpen was established in October 2007. Fifty original artworks of different Belgian and international artists were exhibited in the center of Antwerp. These artworks were placed in the Artfiche and AC Billboards. The duration of the open air exhibition was one week. The exhibition was supported by the Antwerp City Library and the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten Antwerpen. This first edition of the project was presented to the public with the title ‘Insight‘ and was followed by an opening journey through the exhibition. It had a very positive response from the public and the passengers that have experienced the billboards in a new way.
Two years later, in July 2009 the Billboard Project was launched again. This time as ‘Artist Statement and Communication‘. AC Billboards offered nine double sided billboards to the artists in one of the most prominent streets in Antwerp, the Schoenmarkt. During the placing of artworks in billboards the passengers showed a great deal of interest in what was going on. The artworks have created a positive atmosphere in the street. Something different was happening. In the year 2011, third edition of the Billboard Project was released. This time it seemed to be more than just an open air exhibition. We became interested in the way the general public perceived the artworks and in their opinion about art in general.

The last years we've been developing the ideas around the meeting points between artistic meaning and everyday life.How could they be strengthened by the fact that the artwork is disseminated in public spaces and perceived and interpreted by public. Art can encourage communication between diverse social groups, it might be socially engaged, and/or offer a critique on society.

Billboards are very powerful tool of communication in the contemporary society; they are situated in the most prominent places in the cities, constantly disseminating messages. They are used and seen mainly as commercial display, but their communicative quality could be equally used in different way. Being a part of street furniture they could carry art objects and benefit culture. Collaboration with billboard companies gives us the opportunity to reach broad audience and can bring novel ideas about presentation and dissemination of art.
