Experimenting at the frontiers: Looking beyond the known and enabling breakthrough innovation - Philea 19/09/2024

Should philanthropy do more to support basic research, breakthrough innovation and, in general, the “culture of knowledge”? Philanthropy’s “comfort zone” may not currently lie in these areas, but instead in funding the application and transfer of innovative solutions to broader society.

However, strategic grantmaking activities carried out by foundations and philanthropic organisations for frontier projects in the fields of science, technology and the digital realm are needed now more than ever. This is especially true when considering the financial constraints on government budgets which have become increasingly challenging in recent years, notably in Europe.

Alberto Anfossi, Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo writes on why in a world characterised by permanent and disruptive change, we need a new mindset and an open approach to emerging phenomena.

Lessons from Britain’s riots for resilience and cohesion - Philea 18/09/2024

Britain saw its worst outbreak of public disorder for over a decade this summer. The killing of three young girls in Southport saw an outpouring of public grief. There was an effort to target asylum seekers and Muslims as a violent retaliation against groups with no connection to the shocking crime.

Sunder Katwala, British Future asks what are the insights after the British riots for political and civic voices seeking to broaden confidence in a shared future in politically polarised times, in our latest Opinion.

Why philanthropy must champion clean energy to unlock climate adaptation - Philea 16/09/2024

"In Europe, philanthropy is having ‘a moment’. A growing sense that problems shared across the continent – from Covid to war in Ukraine to the climate crisis – is driving a wave of cross-border giving. The sector’s timely and innovative responses to these crises have won us trust and allies in the public sector and yet, an unresolved legacy of the old Europe sits like a large speed bump across the path of a truly European philanthropy.

To seize this moment of growth, we should cut away the tangle of national practices that are choking access to fiscal incentives for internationally minded foundations, donors, and beneficiaries."
