❓How to promote early language for your babies and toddlers?

⭐Label things in your environment (i.e. home, grocery store, park, etc.)
Instead of saying "this" or "that," name the items. You can also label actions that you or your child is doing e.g. "open, jump, clap, go."

A Videofluoroscopic Swallow Study is an x-ray study that evaluates oropharyngeal (mouth and throat) swallowing function.
The test is conducted to:

1) assess how safely and efficiently you swallow
2) determine swallowing strategies
3) help plan swallowing therapy

The VFSS is performed by a physician and/or x-ray technician, and SLP.

During the study, patients swallow various liquid and food consistencies mixed with barium while x-ray images are video-recorded. As the food travels from the mouth to the esophagus, the SLP examines the structures and muscles involved in swallowing.

☀️Speech-language Pathologists use a child's mean length of utterances to assess their language development.

Three ways SLPs work to help increase a child's utterance length are:
👉🏾Increase vocabulary- lack of vocabulary can be the cause of not being able to form a sentence.
👉🏾Improve use of grammatical markers
👉🏾Use Expansion- While the child is playing, whatever they say independently, you add one word when you repeat their sentence.

People most commonly get TBIs from:

⭕Motor vehicle crashes

People who have sport-related and military combat injuries can also have a TBI.

Depending on the severity of injury and part of the brain that is affected, people may have:
👉🏾Physical difficulties (e.g., fainting, seizures, dizziness, etc.)
👉🏾Sensory difficulties (e.g., sensitivity of light, sound, and touch; hearing loss)
👉🏾Behavioral difficulties (e.g., being more emotional or feeling anxious or angry)
👉🏾Thinking difficulties - (e.g., difficulty paying attention, learning new information, and problem solving; memory loss)
👉🏾Speech and language difficulties (e.g., dysarthria, apraxia of speech, word finding difficulties, challenges reading and writing)
👉🏾Social communication difficulties (e.g., difficulty with conversation like taking turns and not interrupting; difficulty understanding nonverbal cues)

Imagine not being able to understand what others are saying to you. Or you understand what they say, but your words don’t come out right when you try to talk. Or you can’t speak at all.

This is what can happen when someone has a stroke.

Stroke survivors may have difficulties with communication and/or swallowing. Communication difficulties include:
▪️aphasia
▪️dysarthria
▪️acquired apraxia of speech
▪️cognitive communication disorders

Although we can’t predict recovery, communication difficulties after a stroke tend to improve with time and treatment.

Want to become a SLP?

Here are 7 steps to become a SLP:
1⃣𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 - ask yourself if you have the right interest and skills to do it. SLPs need to be able to handle essential functions related to the field. You must have a desire for it. You are the advocate for people with communication disorders.

2⃣𝗕𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗕𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗿’𝘀 𝗗𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲 - you need a degree in communication science and disorders or a related field. Even if you have a bachelor’s in a different field, it’s about making sure you have the prerequisites for you to get your master’s in this field.

3⃣𝗘𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿’𝘀 𝗗𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲 - This is where you will receive in-depth principles and methods to work with people with communication and swallowing disorders. Once you completed the academic and clinical coursework, you will need 375 hours work directly with clients. Be sure to check for accreditation.

4⃣𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲 𝗮 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗙𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 - When you have got your masters you will have a transition period from student to independent clinician. You spend a year mentored by a certified SLP to develop and refine your knowledge and skills.

5⃣𝗦𝗹𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝘅𝗶𝘀 𝗘𝘅𝗮𝗺 - to become certified you must pass this exam to receive the ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP).

6⃣𝗢𝗯𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗖𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 - after passing your exam, you need to apply for the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP) to work in the field.

7⃣𝗬𝗼𝘂’𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗲, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗶𝘁 - Keep your certifications up-to-date and keep learning. There is always something new to learn!

▪️Poor oral health has been shown to increase the risk of aspiration pneumonia.

▪️For individuals with dysphagia who have poor oral hygiene, bacteria in the mouth enters the lungs with the food which leads to pneumonia.

🌟Speech-Language Pathologists provide the support to ensure that patients are performing or receiving proper oral hygiene that complies with their eating and drinking recommendations.

▪️Typically developing play, motor, thinking, and social skills
▪️Limited spoken vocabulary for their age

🌟70-80% of late talkers catch up to their peers by pre-school
BUT...
📝Research shows that these kids tend to have difficulties in the areas of language, literacy, social skills, behavior, and executive function.

We don’t know why late language emergence occurs but we do know that early intervention can make a BIG difference!

💫Although children develop at their own pace, there are certain milestones which should be reached by a specific age. When they are not reached, this becomes cause for concern. While some children seem to catch up on their own, others do not.
