While many seniors live in poverty in the Halton region, reports have shown that senior women tend to face poverty more than senior men. By using the After-Tax Low Income Measure, Statistics Canada has found that there are 9.6% of senior women living in poverty according to its Census of Population. The same source says that in Halton there are 6.5% of senior men living in poverty.
So the question is: Why are there more senior women in poverty than senior men? Can this be avoided? What can be done to help senior women, or seniors in general live without having to live in poverty. Try answering some of these prompts in the comments section below, or share your thoughts on this information. We would love to see a discussion start in the comments.

August 1st is Emancipation Day. Emancipation Day is important because it is the day when slavery was abolished in Canada. The abolishment freed thousands of African Canadians in Canada.
Even with slavery abolished, the inhumane treatment of Black Canadians continued. Black people have been historically oppressed by hatred and systemic racism for years. Even now they have to deal with the repercussions of racism in their lives.
We have a list of resources and events you can look at to understand Emancipation Day, systemic racism and anti-Black racism in Canada. We encourage everyone to reflect on the significance of equality, inclusion and freedom as you read through these resources and participate in the events to celebrate the importance of Emancipation Day. Let us reflect on the past and present but also work together to make our future a better place for Black Canadians.
