This month we remember a history that has broken, shaped and inspired many to rise, advocate, fight, and strive and be excellent. As a stage two shelter that supports the BIPOC community we know how important it is to do the work that we do.

Black Women who made a difference.

Mary Ann Camberton Shadd Cary, educator, publisher, abolitionist (born 9 October 1823 in Wilmington, Delaware; died 5 June 1893 in Washington, DC). Mary Ann Shadd was the first Black female newspaper publisher in Canada.

Slavery wasn’t just an American problem. The Underground Railroad reached its peak in the 1850s, after The Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 was passed, and that’s when Mary Ann Shadd Cary moved to Windsor, ON. She sought refuge in Canada like so many other free Blacks and escaped slaves, opened a school, and established a newspaper with the still-relevant motto, “Self-Reliance is the True Road to Independence.” Shadd Cary went on to become an anti-slavery feminist activist and Canada’s first Black newspaper publisher.

In 1994, Shadd was designated a Person of National Historic Significance in Canada.

Welcome to Black History Month!

This is a month where you can take time out to learn about how Africans have impacted history.

Learning about black history, our history, helps better inform us of the world we live in. And helps us better understand those around us.

Acknowledging our history, learning more in-depth about our country’s heroes, victims and contributors, makes us all more equipped to be allies in our daily lives.

What do you do personally, with your family, or professionally through your company or volunteer opportunities, to celebrate and acknowledge Black History Month? Whether you read a book, watch a movie, have a conversation with someone different than you, or visit a memorial, making Black History Month part of your story makes a difference.
