This is the statement issued to media yesterday in response to their illegal eviction attempt of encampment residents.
How is this not an attempt at illegal eviction? The City knows their Bylaws of camping on City property don't apply to encampment residents and would not hold up in a court of law. Yet they continue to issue these notices in attempt to bully and scare encampment residents into packing up and leaving their homes.
When Bylaw officers attended the encampment on Monday to give these 24 hour notices, they told residents they had 24 hours to pack up and move from the site. They also illegally entered people's tents to leave notices inside them. When one of the residents called the number on the notice to ask about an appeal process because he had nowhere else to go, he was told he could not fight the eviction as there is no appeal process.
These Bylaws are out of date, inhumane, and illegal. It is time they were changed. The City of Barrie is wasting valuable time, resources, and money trying to enforce these illegal Bylaws. If they redirected these efforts towards actually supporting our unsheltered residents we would have much better outcomes for all residents of our city. There are other communities doing amazing things to support their unsheltered population, London , Ontario being one of them. Let's put Barrie on the map for something other than cruelty!
Dear Ryan's Hope Community,
As you know Ryan's Hope is the legacy Tom and I created for our son Ryan and the Ryan's Hope Breakfast-To-Go program has been a labour of love for us from the beginning. We started this program to honour who Ryan was and for it to be a legacy to him.
In the three years we have ran this program it has grown so much and was becoming more difficult for us to afford. Thus in December we entered into an agreement with the churches to form the Barrie Breakfast Program Coalition in order to receive funding from the County of Simcoe. The agreement we entered into was that we would retain automy on the days we operate and this is turning out not to be the case. They have hired a paid Program Coordinator to manage the program.
Ryan's Hope is the legacy Tom and I created for our son Ryan and the Ryan's Hope Breakfast-To-Go program has been a labour of love for us from the beginning. We started this program to honour who Ryan was and for it to be a legacy to him. We have used Ryan's and our family's lived experience to help us in creating our vision, mission, and values on which we are guided. We have no interest in being managed and told how to run the program we founded in memory of our son, the program we have run successfully for three years.
This is more than a full time job for which we don't get paid. It has been a labour of love and part of our healing journey. Since becoming part of the coalition it is no longer healing, and has in fact caused us trauma.
We started Ryan's Hope due to failures in the system and to be an alternative to the system that failed our son. It feels as if we have now been swallowed up by that same system. The program we founded in memory of our son Ryan is now called The Barrie Breakfast Program without any regard for Ryan's legacy or respect for Tom and I and the beautiful community our grief built.
Without some source of funding the program is not sustainable for us to continue on our own. We have therefore made the difficult decision to hand the Breakfast-To-Go program over to the coalition. It has caused us too much pain trying to hold onto a program that no longer feels like it belongs to us. Thus as heartbreaking a decision as it is, for our own well being the time has come for us to let it go. Today was our last day serving breakfast.
Ryan's Hope will continue to support our community through our Street Outreach, Loads of Love laundry program, community dinners, and our encampment support. We will also continue with our education and advocacy work. We remain committed to work to change policy, end stigma, and save lives!
With gratitude,
Christine and Tom

Meet the amazing musicians who will be performing for our upcoming "A Reading of Charles Dickens's 'A Christmas Carol' in support of local women"
Sean Patrick is a student of the 4 and 5 string banjos, playing in traditional styles ranging from old time to bluegrass, to Irish music. He focuses on building community and spends most of his time attempting to use music to open portals to other dimensions through which he will escape and never return.
John-Hugh MacDonald is an award-winning Highland piper who has performed and competed at the highest levels internationally. He recently adopted the Irish Uilleann pipes which he describes as a "lovely mystery wrapped in an enigma, the softest instrument with the hardest core".
Jessica Martin is a Metis fiddler from beautiful Orillia, Ontario. Connecting with music and dance is an expression of her life and culture. The intention of her music surrounds the people and purpose for which it is being played. To Jessica, music is a celebration, a way to connect people to spirit and to embrace oneself in another.
Sandy Patrick - Blessed to be a daughter, sister, wife, Mom and Grandma and to be able to walk out this life journey imperfectly but guided by the One who is perfect. Sandy loves teaching Christian style yoga at her home church Westmount Congregation and is so grateful for those who have mentored her musically and that she can share the joy of music with others especially her boys Sean and Dale.

Guys Who Care North Simcoe held our 2023 Fall Meeting on October 23rd and blew the doors off anything we have done before. Not only did we raise $46,000 in a very short campaign outside of our regular fundraising efforts for GBGHF (see our post from Oct 24th), but we also held our regular business where pitches were made for three local worthwhile causes.
In the end, La Maison Rosewood Shelter won the vote! The Shelter suffered a devastating sewage backup during the summer which impacted the entire lower floor and rendered much of it unusable. So the Guys have now made a grant of $18,000 to pay for much of the desperately needed remediation work at the very busy shelter. This is the second time the shelter has received funds from the Guys. Just over two years ago their dilapidated fencing was replaced through a Guys grant and sufficient was left over to install children’s playground equipment.
Guys Who Care North Simcoe are delighted to pass $364,000 in total giving with these donations. Guys Who Care have now been in existence for 8 years and in that time have made significant donations to 13 local charities. The Guys organization has no overheads and every single dollar raised goes directly to the beneficiary charities.
If you’re interested in joining our group to help make a difference in our community, please visit the Join Us page on our website (www.guyswhocare.ca). Our next meeting will be held in the Spring.
