Feeling the effects of working from home with a poor work station set up?

This has been a common trend seen at the clinic since the beginning of the pandemic.

Here are a few tips to help avoid injury:

👉 The top of your monitor should be at eye level as your eyes naturally gaze downwards

👉 Your elbows should be at a 90° angle and close to your sides with your wrists in neutral on your key board

👉 Sit in a well supported chair with lumbar support if possible. If you do not have support, you can roll a towel and place it in the curve at the base of your spine

👉 Use a headset or headphones if you are taking a long phone call. It will avoid your neck being in sustained side bent position.

👉 Stand up and take breaks to walk around and do opposite movements to avoid sustained seated positions for a prolonged period of time

These are just a few tips to help you have a more comfortable work day.

Have you been caught working on your bed, or sofa for prolonged periods of time?

Whiplash: Prevention and Recovery - Physiocanhelp.ca 06/29/2020

You’re being a pain in my neck! How many times have you heard or said this line? Oftentimes, we associate neck pain with people or situations that are troublesome and a nuisance. However, neck pain, in literal terms, can also be problematic, bothersome and quite uncomfortable from the time you wake up until the time you fall asleep.

Are you currently experiencing or have you ever experienced neck pain in the past? You are not alone! 70 per cent of individuals have had neck pain at least once in their lifetime1. A cause of neck pain, most common among drivers, is generally identified as “whiplash.” If you’ve ever been in a car accident or been pushed forcefully from the front or back, it has most likely forced your head too far back and/or too far forward, causing neck pain.

Neck pain can have several causes, all of which impact the structures in your neck in different ways. Car accidents are commonly identified as the major cause of whiplash due to the great force associated with the crash.

Your physiotherapist will assess the causes for
your back and neck pain, mobilize your spinal joints,
and will give you advice on how to best maintain your
thoracic mobility, essential for a healthy low back
and neck.

Your physiotherapist will start by providing you with a
thorough examination of your spine and thoracic mobility.
Using manual therapy and other treatment techniques, your
physiotherapist will help you to regain lost mobility, provide
you with instructions on how to achieve ideal postural
alignment, and prescribe therapeutic exercises that will
support your spine. They also prescribe suitable and safe
stretches or “pause exercises,” and provide tips on how you
can correct your position when sitting at a computer.
Your physiotherapist can also refer you back to your family
physician in cases where they suspect an underlying medical
condition may be causing your back and neck pain that
requires further investigation.

Ontario Staged Re-opening: What Stage 2 Means for You

In Stage 2, additional restrictions will be loosened while emphasizing public health advice, workplace health and safety guidance, and personal and collective responsibilities.

More businesses and services will be permitted to open, as well as community, recreational and outdoor spaces. The people and employers of the province must continue to act and work in the ways required to help stop the spread of COVID-19. As part of Ontario’s responsible approach, protections for vulnerable people must remain a top priority throughout the next stages of reopening.

Stage 2 will allow more people to get back to work safely while not overburdening the critical services that support families, workers and Ontario’s economy. Businesses, organizations and public spaces permitted to open or increase service during Stage 2 are strongly recommended to review and implement workplace health and safety guidance available and easy-to-access at Ontario.ca/covidsafety. There are more than 100 guidance documents published by the government and health and safety associations.

Throughout reopening, many businesses and organizations across the province have used the government’s guidance to develop their own workplace policies and safety plans.

Public & Social Gatherings:
Regardless of where you live in Ontario, social gathering limits will be expanded to up to 10 people. People must still practice physical distancing, by keeping at least two metres away from others outside of their direct household. This change to social gathering size will apply to people across the province, regardless of whether their region has moved into Stage 2.

Every region in Ontario has experienced the COVID-19 outbreak differently. By grouping regions of the province by local public health units (PHUs), the government’s approach reflects the unique realities of different communities in Ontario, recognizing that many areas of the province have seen fewer or no new cases of COVID-19 in the past two weeks. Directed by the Province,
each region will be permitted to enter Stage 2 when safe to do so. The government’s decision will be based on the public health criteria outlined in the framework being met locally, including virus spread and containment along with health system and incidence-tracking capacity.

The Province will allow the following regions to move into Stage 2 first:
• Algoma Public Health
• Brant County Health Unit
• Chatham-Kent Public Health
• Eastern Ontario Health Unit
• Grey Bruce Health Unit
• Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit
• Hastings Prince Edward Public Health
• Huron Perth Public Health
• Kingston, Frontenac and Lennox & Addington Public Health
• Leeds Grenville & Lanark District Health Unit
• Middlesex-London Health Unit
• North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit
• Northwestern Health Unit
• Ottawa Public Health
• Peterborough Public Health
• Porcupine Health Unit
• Public Health Sudbury & Districts
• Region of Waterloo Public Health and Emergency Services
• Renfrew County and District Health Unit
• Simcoe-Muskoka District Health Unit
• Southwestern Public Health
• Thunder Bay District Health Unit
• Timiskaming Health Unit
• Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health

The following regions will remain in Stage 1 until trends of key public health indicators demonstrate readiness to move into Stage 2:
• Durham Region Health Department
• Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit
• Halton Region Public Health
• Hamilton Public Health Services
• Lambton Public Health
• Niagara Region Public Health
• Peel Public Health
• Toronto Public Health
• Windsor-Essex County Health Unit
• York Region Public Health
At the beginning of each week, the government will provide an update on the ongoing assessment
of these regions, and whether they are ready to move into Stage 2 at the end of the week.

CBC News - Canada 06/08/2020

Ontarians will soon be allowed to gather in groups up to 10 and many more businesses and services will be allowed to begin operating again as part of the next phase of the province's regional reopening, set to begin in some areas later this week.

Premier Doug Ford outlined the details of Phase 2 of Ontario's plan to lift restrictions on its semi-lockdown, implemented to help curb the spread of COVID-19, at his daily briefing this afternoon.

Twenty-four of Ontario's 34 public health units will be allowed to move into Phase 2 on Friday. The remaining 10, concentrated primarily in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) and near the U.S.-Canada border, will need to wait until new daily case numbers consistently decrease.
