More like FUN therapy!!
People have a remarkable ability to come together and overcome challenges. They can reconcile past hurts, get to the root of disagreements, solve problems, and support each other emotionally.
Everyone can have a bad moment and act unkindly, but warm-hearted individuals apologize and make amends. Unfortunately, it seems that being rigid, judgmental and even mean is becoming a cool way to be in conversation.
Conflict entrepreneurs profit from sharing provocative content on the news or social media, causing people to feel justified in not listening to others with different perspectives.
A Story from the Sidewalk:
Sidewalk Talk founder once had an elderly woman at a listening event get mean with her for being from San Francisco, blaming her for letting immigrants into the country. Traci calmly and thoughtfully used her 20 years of couples counseling skills and asked the woman what bothered her about immigrants, and the woman responded that they were dangerous.
Traci acknowledged their shared desire for safety rather than attacking the woman as a racist. Instead, Traci asked where the woman learned that immigrants were unsafe. The woman shared her favorite news anchor as her source. Traci then offered to share her ideas about safety, inviting the woman into a listening exchange. The woman said yes. The intention of a listening exchanged was to move them both out of the rigidity and one-sided judgmental assholery and into connection, flexibility, and warm-hearted curiosity.
We are not condoning hate speech. We believe that listening disarms the fear under hate speech.
Let's make listening with a warm-hearted curiosity the new "cool way" to be in conversation. Together, we can break down barriers and create a world where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued.
Stay tuned as Sidewalk Talk plans our next cohort of HEAR, an advanced heart-centered listening training that looks at power, nervous system regulation, bias, and other advanced listening skills.

[Sidewalk Talk YYC] We’re Still Here! ❄ This newsletter comes a little later than I would have liked! I hope you enjoyed some time over the holidays to connect with the family, friends and hopefully yourself as well. I know that many of us (including myself) did our best to make the most of whatever it is you felt safe doing and that’s ...

“The first thing you need to do is check some of your stereotypes at the door, people will surprise you…” - Tamanna Salikuddin

People’s identities are multi-layered—giving us various possible points of connection with another person. Stereotypes obscure those possibilities, as Afghan Taliban negotiators found when they talked with an Indian-American Muslim diplomat named Tamanna Salikuddin. Tamanna tells how she seeks individuals’ identities to build the trust for negotiations. Listen to episode 8 of Culturally Attuned, a podcast co-created by the United States Institute of Peace and Burning Man Project.

Meet Wendy, a Listener.
When asked why she listens with us, she said “I miss having opportunities to talk with people, particularly during the pandemic. This gives me a chance to connect with people and be a connection for people in a time of unprecedented loneliness and sadness. We could all use a little heart-centred listening in our lives! “
Wendy thinks that you should try being a Listener with us because, “You never know who you will listen to, who you will learn from and who will be thankful for your time. It’s a reminder of the great humanity that lives in our communities.”
Being a Sidewalk Talk YYC Listener is impactful for both the person who stopped to talk AND the Listener. Don’t believe it? Come see for yourself!

Meet Derek, a Listener.
When asked why he listens with us, he said,”I feel like the world we live in now promotes disconnection from other people. No need to see old friends face-to-face and catch up, we follow along on social media. No need to talk on the phone, we just send a short text. These aren't meaningful substitutes for real human interaction, and we're starving for it. Ever have a nice chat in passing with the cashier at the store, or the person who made your coffee? It feels amazing! I want people to have that experience, but I also want them to feel comfortable enough to talk about something meaningful if they so choose, because not everyone has someone they can talk to. But even talking about the weather can feel fulfilling if you're able to see the real human experience the other person is having. “
Derek wants you to try being a Listener because, “we are social animals and so many people are starving for social connection. It doesn't take much, just the willingness to put aside your fears and judgement and sit with someone in their valid thoughts and feelings for a few minutes. If you look for the best in someone else, you will definitely see it, and they will feel seen.”

“We are not the survival of the fittest.
We are the survival of the nurtured.
Those who are nurtured best, survive best.”
Our founder spoke recently at TedX in Kassel, Germany!
Traci spoke about embracing our neediness and how it makes us real. The event was completley and we are so proud of her! We love this quote she discussed: "We are not the survival of the fittest. We are the survival of the nurtured. Those who are nurtured best, survive best."
What does this mean to you?
How can you communicate your needs?
How can your loved ones meet your needs?
The talk was recorded and we will be sharing it with you next month.

Meet Farheen, a Sidewalk Talk YYC Listener. They became a Listener in order to learn more empathy and understanding for people in our community. Farheen believes everyone should try being a Listener because it’s creates a sense of connection and trust between strangers (which feels amazing) and that’s something our community needs more of.
