Originally, the space featured a classic, yet somewhat traditional, aesthetic with its built-in bathtub and warm wood cabinetry. The cabinetry, while practical and rich in character, gave the room a more enclosed feeling.

In the redesign, the space has been opened up to enhance a sense of luxury and relaxation. The most notable change is the introduction of a freestanding bathtub, which immediately elevates the room’s aesthetic. The sleek lines of the modern tub create a striking contrast with the traditional wood accents, giving the space a timeless appeal that merges the old with the new.

Above, the lighting has been upgraded with a statement chandelier that not only provides ample light but also adds a touch of glamour to the room. The wooden window frames and cabinetry have been retained, maintaining the warmth and richness of the original design while providing a beautiful contrast to the crisp white of the bathtub and modern fixtures.

We wanted to start our week off by sharing a space that is the epitome of European elegance, combining the warmth of natural wood with luxurious details. The large, multi-paned windows allow an abundance of natural light to flood the space, highlighting the rich, wooden panelling that wraps the dining area in a cozy yet refined embrace.

At the center, a round wooden pedestal table anchors the room, complemented by intricately carved wooden chairs that boast a classic caned back and cushioned seats, adding both comfort and style. The soft blue and gold leather on the chairs contrasts beautifully with the amber wood tones, bringing a subtle touch of colour that enhances the room’s timeless feel.

Above the table there is a grand chandelier with a circular design, the gilded gold metal frame adds a touch of opulence. The chandelier’s minimalist, yet elegant, candle-like lights provide a warm, ambient glow that perfectly complements the sunlight streaming through the windows.

One of the purest forms of energy is light. The lighting placed in a home is the physical manifestation of the sun and this design feature uplifts the energy within the home. When we design a space we carefully consider the lighting that we are going to add within the rooms and make sure that all areas of the home are balanced and full of good chi from both light fixtures and natural sunlight from the windows.

To have optimal Feng Shui in your home office it is crucial for your desk to be in the “command position.” What does the command position mean? If you are sitting at your desk you will be able to have a clear view of the door and those who are entering through it. 

By placing your desk in this position you will reduce surprises within your career and be in control of your personal energy and those that you are working with. It also increases focus and gives you a better perspective of opportunities and ideas coming your way. You will feel more at ease when working because at a subconscious level you will know that you can see anyone who is approaching you.

A nursery is the first space that comes to mind when getting ready for a new baby. Most individuals would like to ideally work with a blank canvas that is solely designed for their new baby, but not everyone has the space in their homes to do this. It can also be really nice to have your baby close to you during their first year and it doesn’t require a lot of square footage in your primary bedroom to incorporate a nook for baby.

A corner nook in your primary bedroom is a fantastic option that will keep both yours and babies space separate from one another. It only takes a corner in your room to design a lovely and practical space while still keeping the bedroom function.

It also works well to implement furniture you already have into the design. If you have a dresser in your space you can add a change pad and baskets, instead of purchasing a separate change table. An existing chair in the room can be used for night time feedings and baby snuggles. Purchasing furniture for baby is temporary, whereas investing in quality pieces for your bedroom will last for many years to come.

We love working with fellow artists and we wanted to do something totally unique for our head shots on our website. We commissioned a close friend (she is also a fellow interior designer) to do pencil sketches of both of us. We were both so pleased with them that we framed the original drawings and placed them above our desks. The artist is currently taking on custom orders and we can’t wait to work with her again soon - if you want to check out her work please follow !

Going into the August long weekend we wanted to share the long term vision for Ellis Kelly. We both grew up working for our father’s oil and gas company in Alberta and loved being a part of a family business. Our dream for Ellis Kelly is to one day have both of Virginia’s sons working for the company and eventually taking it over from us.

An interesting fact about Virginia that we haven’t yet shared is she is a solo mom by circumstance to Ellis and a solo mom by choice to baby Euan. Last year she decided to embark on the journey of having another baby on her own using a donor.

This year has been filled with so much grow both in the company and our family and we can’t wait for what comes next. ✨

We get asked daily about our company name and why we didn’t go the traditional route of naming the company after ourselves. Instead we decided to combine and honour 2 family members. Ellis is the name of Virginia’s first-born son and Kelly was the name of our father who passed away in 2014, a month before Ellis was born. Our father ran his own company and he played an integral role in inspiring us to become the entrepreneurs we are today.

At Ellis Kelly we love to reimagine our clients existing pieces and believe that furniture should wear in not out. Furniture holds energy - which can be the wonderful memories that are attached to the piece or even the energy of the people who have used it.

We reupholstering this French armchair and ottoman in a beautiful woolen plaid fabric from the UK. It is having its second life in the nursery room in the Mayfair Bel-Aire residence.

Our clients for the Mayfair Bel-Aire residential bathroom project wanted to keep the existing wood vanity, stone flooring and granite countertop - all of these elements were extremely high quality and in great condition. In order to modernize the space, we started off by added a blue and white striped wallpaper inspired by a men’s dress shirt, a freestanding bathtub (we removed the dated built in tub), blue stone and ceramic tile around the new freestanding bath, polished nickel bath fixtures, modern vanity sconces and additional pot lights to brightened up the room. The bathroom doesn’t have any windows so the mirror above the tub was hung to lighten the space and fool the eye into thinking that there is a large picture window. This bathroom is a perfect example of how a space with good bones can be transformed without needing to gut and add more waste to the landfill. Swipe ➡️ for the before photo.

We have been obsessed with this hot air balloon light fixture for years and always wanted to implement it into a design project. When we opened up our own studio space late last year we jumped at the opportunity to make it a feature. We’re firm believers that every space needs a little touch of whimsy and fun! 📸

We are starting off today by introducing the other half of Ellis Kelly, Natalie. Natalie is the left brained side of the business and brings with her 10 years of corporate knowledge. Read below to get to know more about her outside of the office! 

        1.      What’s the first thing you do in the morning to get your workday started? I can’t start my day without an Americano - we are blessed to have an amazing French cafe, , in the bottom of our building and the coffee is so good here that you don’t even need to add cream or sugar to it!

        2.      What’s the last book you read, and how was it? Hotel Nantucket by Elin Hilderbrand - loved, loved this book! This story transported me to the island of Nantucket (fun fact Virginia got married on this island) and if you like a character study with a touch of romance this book is the perfect summer beach read.

        3.      If you could time travel, where would you go, and who would you see? I would go back to 2008 when my family went on a cruise of the Mediterranean. It was such an amazing trip and really opened my eyes to all the beautiful design throughout Europe. My dad passed away when I was 25 years old so I would give anything to spend this time with him again.

        4.      Do you have any irrational fears? What are they? Getting rodents in my house - I had a mouse problem earlier this year and now I am terrified of them ever coming back.

        5.      What’s your favorite way to treat yourself when you want to splurge? I love to buy books! I will go and roam book stores for hours. My guilty pleasure is romance fantasy (otherwise known as romantasy). Our studio space is right above .books and I have splurged a lot since we moved in. They even have their books categorized by genre!
