"Although we now spend most of our time indoors, the desire to connect with is written in our DNA, which is where comes in as we try to incorporate nature into our . For our hunter-gatherer ancestors, nature was the source of food, clothing, shelter, and other necessities. Thousands of years later, our needs can be easily met without foraging or hunting, but this pull toward the outdoors remains embedded in our psyches.

"The concept comes from the term , which refers to the human tendency to interact with other forms of life. In design, it means creating a sense of harmony between your home and the world outside.

"Biophilic design was called out in Pinterest's 2022 trend report, which noted significant spikes in search interest for the term, and it's a buzzword you'll still hear today from experts across the design industry. After too much time defined mainly by pandemic-driven isolation and anxiety, creating soothing spaces that bolstered our health and was perhaps more critical than ever during those years.

"Biophilic design continues to influence interior decor today, as seen in the rise in the use of the color , the trend towards indoor-outdoor living, and the return of wood and other natural elements in furnishings and wall treatments. To introduce this nature-focused hashtag trend to your space, consider these ideas for biophilic design.

"One of the easiest ways to introduce biophilic design to your home is through live . If you're a novice plant parent, start small with a low-maintenance plant for your desk or a set of potted herbs on your kitchen windowsill. For the more experienced indoor gardener, take your plant collection to the next level with creative solutions that integrate into the room's design. To reap the benefits of biophilic design, dedicate an entire wall to plants, line your staircase with greenery, or fill each corner of the room with your favorite leafy varieties.

"If you're lucky enough to live in an area among trees, grass, or near a body of water, make sure your home's architecture takes full advantage of it for natural biophilic design. Frame views of the outdoors with large picture windows uninterrupted by grilles or sashes. This trick lets you utilize nature as wall art, whether you live on a lakefront property or look out over a grassy backyard. Also, consider installing a skylight in a bathroom, hallway, or kitchen for views of the sky (and a boost of natural light)."

"Let’s explore some of the key reasons why biophilic is not only good for our health and happiness but also for economic prosperity. Biophilic design has been linked to enhanced productivity in various settings, including offices and schools. By incorporating natural elements such as sunlight, greenery, and natural materials, workplaces become more inviting and conducive to focus and creativity.

"Studies have shown that employees in biophilic environments report higher job satisfaction and lower stress levels, leading to improved productivity and reduced absenteeism. These improvements in employee well-being directly translate into economic gains for businesses in the form of higher output.

"Biophilic design isn't just about functionality; it also adds aesthetic value to properties. Buildings that incorporate natural elements tend to command higher prices in the real estate market.

"Homebuyers and tenants are increasingly seeking spaces that promote a sense of well-being and environmental , leading to greater demand for biophilic residences and commercial properties. As a result, property developers and investors can capitalize on this trend by integrating biophilic principles into their projects, thus driving up property values and generating economic returns."

"It is becoming increasingly clear that spending time in can benefit our mental health and . But a new study by my colleagues and me shows that you don’t have to actually be in nature to reap the rewards. Simply directing your gaze towards natural elements, even in the middle of a city, can enhance wellbeing.

"Our paper, published in the journal People and Nature, used eye-tracking technology to explore how focusing on natural versus man-made elements affects mental health.

"Urban living, with its fast pace and high levels of stress, has been linked to numerous mental health issues, including anxiety and depression.

"Our research team, which was led by me and consisting of my colleagues Brian Rizowy and Assaf Shwartz, recruited 117 adults for the study. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three groups: one that focused on natural elements such as trees (green group), one that focused on man-made elements such as buildings (grey group) and a third group that focused on a mix of both (mixed group).

"Each participant wore specialised eye-tracking glasses during a 45-minute guided walk around town and the campus. The route included ten designated stopping points designed to emphasise either natural or man-made elements, depending on the group.

"Before and after the walk, participants completed surveys assessing their mood, anxiety levels and the restorative quality of the walk. The surveys included standardised measures such as the positive and negative affect schedule (Panas) and the state-trait anxiety inventory (Stai).

"The eye-tracking glasses recorded where participants were looking throughout the walk, allowing researchers to quantify the amount of time spent focusing on (natural) or grey (man-made) elements. In fact, our technique offered a precise and objective measure of visual engagement, strengthening the link between nature exposure and improved wellbeing. The data confirmed that each group really did spend more time looking at the scenery we had asked them to focus on.

"The results were striking. Participants who focused more on green elements reported significant improvements in mood and reductions in anxiety compared to those who focused on grey elements. And they showed higher levels of positive emotions and lower levels of anxiety after the walk. They also reported feeling more refreshed and rejuvenated."

"In a new study published in the journal People and Nature, researchers from Bangor University and Technion – Israel Institute of Technology have demonstrated that simply observing natural elements during urban walks can significantly benefit mental health.

"The research shows that city dwellers who pay visual attention to rather than human-made structures tend to experience reduced anxiety and enhanced feelings of restoration.

"Urbanization has brought about numerous advantages, such as economic growth and innovation. However, city living is often associated with chronic stress and mental fatigue, leading to conditions like depression and anxiety. Previous research has consistently highlighted the positive effects of interacting with nature, including improved mood, stress reduction, and cognitive benefits.

"Despite these findings, the specific aspects of that contribute to these mental health benefits remained unclear. The new study aimed to fill that gap by investigating how visual attention to elements during urban walks influences psychological well-being."
