Kristen Dorland Yoga and Pilates
Yoga, Pilates, and mindful movement instruction in YYC and Virtually anywhere. Group classes, corporate group classes, and private instruction available.
Welcome to my page, I'm so happy you are here! I'm Kristen; I'm a certified Yoga teacher, trained as an instructor through Stott Pilates, and I teach breath and movement classes. This last year has taught me to let go of any concept of perfection or ideas of what SHOULD be, and to be more gentle. With myself, with loved ones, with acqaintances and strangers. To allow and be gentle with what shows
You can now find me on Tuesday evenings in Marda Loop - I love this space so much, and the community is so warm and welcoming!

Yoga + Pilates
7:15-8:15 pm
โ
Combining the dynamic movements of Pilates with the longer held postures of yoga; we will fire up the deep supporting muscles of your core, and allow them to bolster your movements throughout your practice. Wind down your session by embracing tranquil stillness and rest.
โ
I hope to see you soon - in person or virtually ๐
The energy in Pilates class was palpable in the best possible way this morning - it was wonderful to set eyes on some beautiful faces that I havenโt seen in a while!
โ
I canโt wait to start my new class tomorrow evening: Yoga and Pilates Flow, 7-8pm every Thursday.
โ
Today is the last day of the sale at Yoga MCC: a 2 week trial for new students for just $11 (plus other deals). So if youโve been thinking about getting back on your Mat, now is the time to drop in ๐
Iโm happy to be offering a new class this Fall at Yoga MCC! Yoga MCC is a cozy, zen studio in the heart of Marda Loop, and I hope you can join me:

It's easy to fall into movement patterns that we enjoy, because they feel good in our bodies! But even when we move with the best of intentions, repeating the same movement over and over without variation can lead to stress injury (kind of like the echo-chamber effect in our social media ๐คฏ ).
โ
Why not try something different this, or add some new movement to your regular routine? There are 3 new Yoga practices available now! Whether you're craving stretch and release, power, or soothing flow, there is a practice for you.
โ
Happy weekend ๐
The news is heavy these days, and recent world events have repercussions that affect us ALL. It is incredibly important to stay informed and engaged, plan, discuss, and donate where you can to make a difference. We need to do all of this while continuing to fulfill the roles that we currently hold in life: care-givers need to give care, providers need to provide, we need to treat each other and ourselves with respect and grace. Whew! Challenging to find balance, for sure.
โ
So where do we go when we are feeling overwhelmed. For me, it's often my yoga mat. Space to breathe and shift my perspective. I'm incredibly privileged to live in a safe place and a comfortable home, and I acknowledge that and practice gratitude for it daily. Sometimes flowing and active movement helps, sometimes something a little gentler. If I can't make it to my mat, maybe it's a a short walk with the dog, or even a drive in my car, just taking notice - appreciating.
โ
Practice gratitude, take little breaks, move your body - and stay awake.

This was not the practice I had planned to film earlier this week!
โ
Originally, it was going to be super strong, faster-paced Yoga and Pilates workout - but when I started, I realized that my body and mind felt depleted, and that I would benefit more from something just a little softer.
โ
So I gave myself permission to shift gears, and made this instead: a 50 minute heart opening sequence full of slower-paced stretchy movements, balanced with just the right amount of strength building poses. Wood blocks and plenty of modifications are offered throughout to either spice things up, or back things off as required for your body and mind in the moment. Available now ๐
โ
PS: new Yoga and Pilates Workout coming soon!
For many of us, plans have shifted as we once again find ourselves rolling with the punches. The last 2 years have been a true schooling in the beauty of releasing expectations and moving forward into what is.
โ
Given the current spread of virus in our city, Iโve decided to postpone the new session of live classes at Elbow Park. I hope to start up again the first or second week of February. The Video Collection will continue to have new classes added starting this week; whether you're looking to sweat, stretch, or simply connect with your breath and quiet, there is something for you there ๐
New(ish)! Last year I made a 3 part series to help our bodies get ready to head into the great outdoors and enjoy all that winter has to offer:

โ
These ๐ฃ๐ฆ๐จ๐ช๐ฏ๐ฏ๐ฆ๐ณ ๐ง๐ณ๐ช๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ฅ๐ญ๐บ practices are for everyone, and Iโve bumped them up in the library to help you get those hips, ankles and knees ready for the snow and ice - whether youโre hiking, skiing, skating, or simply walking in the snow, these practices can benefit you ๐
โ
(Ps, brand new videos coming later this week!)
Itโs been a very cold and very snowy winter break! Too chilly to be out for very long, which means we have been spending lots of cozy family time in our little ski condo โ๏ธ
โ
I havenโt had space to film any new practices the last couple of weeks, so I pulled up some of the most loved videos from the archives! Let me know if you have an old favourite that you would like to see pulled to the top of the collection ๐
Happy Christmas, from my light to yours ๐ฅฐ
Merry Christmas Eve friends! Itโs such a busy time of year, I havenโt posted lately! I hope you find some time over the holidays to breathe and move your body; even 10-15 minutes can help to release tension and reset. Here are some newer practices uploaded in the last month, and Iโll be bumping up some old favourites to the top of the list over the next week ๐ Link in bio to check them out!
Today is ! Giving Tuesday is a global generosity movement created to unleash the power of people and organizations to transform their communities.
โ
In Yoga, Karma is the practice of giving back to the communities of which you are a part. In its purest form, it is an act of kindness and generosity that neither demands, nor expects, reciprocation. The law of Karma is that we live in a reciprocal environment, but as humans it's easy to rely on modern conveniences, routines and habits that centre around self. As a result, we often don't give and take, we just take. The consequences of this tactic are obvious globally, with imbalances socially, economically and environmentally around the world.
โ
While we may not always get what we give, our own individual efforts keep the system running for the collective. Steady and consistent effort in putting service before self (I've also heard this called strategic unselfishness, which I love!). Here are some ideas:
โ
- offer a compliment
- recycle
- listen to someone
- teach someone something useful
- volunteer time
- support small business
- show up
- offer thanks and gratitude
- post a positive review
- donate to a charity or service in your community
โ
Remember that there is no small act of kindness or service. Each action has a ripple effect = Karma ๐
We came together to practice in the beautiful Elbow Park Community Centre this week on a chilly but beautiful Wednesday morning. The sun was glistening off the sprinkle of snow outside, and the puppies in the park were soaking up every moment of playtime! Inside the clubhouse we were cozy and warm, and enjoying our own playtime with a slowed down practice; connecting to our powerhouse, and allowing our core awareness and breath to guide and support us through our movements. ๐Video is available now; practice along with us anytime.
A little reminder that in-person classes start tomorrow morning (Wednesday) at the beautiful and welcoming Elbow Park Community centre.
โ
Two ๐ฟ๐๐๐-๐๐ฃ spots are open for tomorrowโs class (thank you to those who kindly let me know that they wonโt be able to make it to the first one).
โ
I canโt practice a special yoga and pilates flow with you!
Lest we forget...
โ
I'm forever grateful, and committed to living a life full of honour, integrity, and service: making small choices each day to be empathetic, gracious and true, and taking time to reflect and learn from my missteps so that I may improve.
โ
If you're looking for a way to give back today, I highly recommend checking out Homes for Heroes !
โ
Homes for Heroes was started by a good friend of mine, who developed it in response to the growing number of military veterans who are facing crisis as they return to civilian life and find themselves on the path to homelessness. These veterans put their lives on the line to protect our freedoms and now they need, and deserve, our support. With your help Homes For Heroes will provide them with housing along with the resources, services and training that will enable them to successfully transition back into civilian life.

Covid has not been kind to many of us, but this is especially true for women and children in situations of domestic abuse. November is family violence prevention month - please donate generously to Discovery House ๐ link in bio to donate and sign up for class.
โ
Please help me in supporting Discovery House, which has partnered with Brenda Strafford Centre and Sonshine Community Services to create awareness and raise funds with the โStrong Like a Womanโ campaign. It is their mission to provide women and children fleeing domestic violence longer-term, safe places to call home while they rebuild their lives. The need for help is greater than ever, as the isolation measures to combat COVID-19 have created barriers to seeking help from domestic violence. When women have finally been able to get the help they need, they have come to Discovery House with more severe and frequent abuse. Many organizations in the sector believe that current statistics only reflect a fraction of women experiencing domestic violence, and they are bracing for an influx of people seeking help once isolation measures ease.

Chase is reading โThe Breadwinnerโ in his grade 6 English class, so I decided to get a copy and read it with him as well (I miss English and literature class, haha!). We read the first couple of chapters togetherโฆ and then I stayed up and finished it that night.
โ
This book is a must read for everyone! It gives a glimpse into the lives of women in Afghanistan under Taliban rule:
โ
โข Women and girls are not allowed to leave the home without a male family member
โข are forbidden to go to school
โข they must stay in their home and the windows must be painted black so that nobody can see them insideโฆ plus many other brutal and oppressive laws.

โ
In this story the main character is an 11 year old girl who disguises herself as a boy to go out and support her family after her brother is killed and her father arrested.
โ
I love that Chase is reading this with his class. It opens up vital discussions around gender segregation, strength and resilience all while delivering a serious punch of perspective. A short story but so, so important. This one will stick with me.

Iโve heard from many of you that the struggle to commit to a home practice is REAL. I hear you! But just like so many things in life, the hardest part is getting started, and the major roadblocks we encounter tend to be in our mind.
โ
When I first began my home practice my kids were really young, and the only place I had some privacy and quiet was in my bathroom - so that's where I practiced! Truly, ๐๐ฃ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐๐๐ง๐ can be a sacred practice space. And with the chillier weather and shorter days upon us, why leave the comfort of your own home? Why not practice in your PJ's?

Here, I've put together 4 simple tips to help you overcome your reasons โwhy notโ. Swipe right through the pics to get started on cultivating a virtual home practice tailored just for you ๐
Pop-Up virtual classes start this week - perfect timing for this chillier weather. Stay cozy in your home and letโs practice together ๐

Thankful ๐
โ
Gratitude has a way of creating space to move the away from the stories we tell ourselves around our feelings, stories that tend to spiral and repeat. Much like yoga, gratitude is a practice, and through that practice we can shift our attention away from the noise, and towards what is most important. It can help us nurture a stronger relationship with the things we cherish, the things that bring us the most joy.
โ
These people are my most important things, my reasons, my why. While not every moment is easy or enjoyable, Iโm thankful for them all, because they are all part of my story ๐
โ
Thank you .jones_photography for the beautiful photos!
This 40 minute feel good vinyasa practice includes gentle reminders to encourage you along in your practice of gratitude as well. Nurture your relationship with the things that matter most to you.
โ
Real story, the filming of this practice was interrupted several times by our barking puppy, and the sound of kids feet stampeding on the floor above. I actually even had to pause filming to go pick up kid 2 from school! I did my best to edit those interruptions out and share this practice with you anyways.
โ
I get plenty of opportunities to be on my mat un-interrupted. This was just not one of them, haha! I think it was meant to be, because those kids are the most important things, absolutely my number one focus in my own gratitude practice. Along with my husband .chrisdorland and my entire family and many other things. The dog is up there (most of the time) too.
I find this so comforting. Our spirits are rich with the love and stories of those who came before us; we are never alone ๐
