In Alberta, becoming a registered midwife requires a four-year Bachelor of Midwifery (B.Mid) degree, combining academic coursework and clinical training.
Midwifery students learn the physiology of pregnancy and childbirth, along with prenatal and postnatal care. Clinical placements are crucial, providing hands-on experience under the guidance of seasoned midwives. A midwifeâs role goes beyond medicineâthey offer emotional and physical support during one of lifeâs most vulnerable times.

Deciding where to have your baby is one of the biggest choices youâll make during your pregnancy journey. Your midwife will help you explore the options noted below so that you can make the best possible decision for you.
đĽ Hospital - Many people opt for hospitals, with around 68% of Alberta midwifery clients planning to deliver there. Hospitals offer quick access to specialised care and advanced monitoring for both you and your baby. Since all registered midwives in Alberta have hospital privileges, giving birth in a hospital is recommended for those facing higher-risk births.
đĄ Home - If you prefer a familiar environment, home births may be for you. Midwives in Alberta undergo thorough training to ensure safe home deliveries, and approximately 25% of clients opt for this route. For low-risk pregnancies, home births are just as safe as hospital births while providing a cozy and familiar setting for labor.
đ Birth Center - Birth centers combine the comforts of home with professional care. These community-based facilities offer a secure space for labor and delivery under the guidance of registered midwives.
Regardless of your chosen birthing location, your midwife will make sure you get care that focuses on your well-being.
Alberta Association of Midwives supports NWT midwives and Indigenous midwives, and urges the NWT government to reconsider drastically reducing midwifery funding by $900K. Indigenous and northern midwives are integral to keeping birth in community and reducing birth evacuation, which improves care and saves the health system money. Please share with your networks and keep this funding cut from moving forward!

Selecting a birthing partner to support you can transform your birthing experience! Whether it's your significant other, a family member, or a close friend, having someone who respects and stands by your decisions can offer invaluable comfort and encouragement while you're in labor.
Remember, your chosen birthing companion should be someone you have faith in and feel at ease with, capable of speaking up for you and fostering a serene atmosphere. If you find yourself without a birthing partner, your midwife will be there every step of the way, ensuring that you feel empowered and supported throughout the birthing journey. You're never alone on this journey when you have a midwife by your side! đ¤â¨
Share your pearls of wisdom from your midwife! đ
If youâre newly pregnant or trying, you may be wondering how involved your midwife is in your pregnancy and postpartum.
Here's a brief timeline:
Our Alberta Midwives will book an appointment with you from 8 to 10 weeks gestation. Youâll then meet every four weeks until you reach 30 weeks and then every two weeks until youâre almost ready to give birth.
Weâll never leave you with questions or concerns. During labor, your midwife will be by your side, providing continuous support through delivery, whether it's at home, a birth center, or a hospital.
After the baby is born and you and the newborn are stable, youâll be allowed to go home around 3 to 4 hours later if at a birth center or hospital. In the case of home births, once the birth is over, your midwife will finish their visit. Following childbirth, your midwife will visit your home on Days 1, 3, and 5 to check on both you and your baby's well-being.
Continuing on this journey, you will have clinic appointments at 2, 4, and 6 weeks after giving birth to ensure a smooth transition into parenthood. Your midwife will be there as a constant source of support, helping you navigate through each stage of this life-changing experience.
