Funerals have definitely evolved over the years, but one thing that hasn't changed is that food still plays an important role in helping us mourn. Gathering with others and sharing a meal after a funeral or memorial service gives us the opportunity to share memories and stories of a loved one and honor their memory. It also helps us understand we are not alone during even our darkest days.
In 1846, funeral biscuits were traditionally made and given to mourners after the service as a remembrance of the deceased, or sent to mourners who were unable to attend. Does your family have a traditional dish that you bring to a potluck meal after a service?
By the way, if you were wondering what pearlash is (we were!), we learned it's a common ingredient in traditional German recipes. It may also be written as potash or pottasche, potassium carbonate, salts of tartar, and carbonate of potash. To modernize the recipe, use 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda for every teaspoon of pearlash called for in a recipe.
