What I like about Portrait Photography
One year ago shooting with and in Rolley Lake! Shooting in the water was a fun challenge that gave us some incredibly unique portrait and a nice cool off from the midday heat. Although, it was quite chilly by evening, and Aleya is a champ for jumping in the water at dusk.
A Saturday night on the town? Or a Sunday stroll in the park?

A green bridge between green trees over green water. Had some free time after shooting for in Anacortes and went down to visit this popular bridge.
Coach Dave at
Dave needed some photos for his website. We met up at and spent a few hours shooting and talking and listening to punk rock. I got to know Dave a lot better and that’s the great fun of a portrait session!
is back on the promo circuit with a new music video for his single "Dance for a While."
This shot is from his previous music video for his song "Nothing Special." There was a lot of downtime in between setups and I noticed Zach lightly clapping and stomping to a tune in his head. I moved sneakily through the darkness to get this frame and just as I put the camera up he looked over and noticed spotted me.
Give his new song a listen and watch the music video while you're at it.
Congrats on all the new work this year, Zach, and thanks again for having me out to shoot!
Sometimes you just need to change your perspective. 🌊🐠
I was shooting landscape (horizontal) with the camera lens just above the surface of the water. Aleya laid back into the water and gently pushed off a rock. The motion helped keep her afloat while laying in the water. As I was editing the I played around with flipping the image and found it most interesting on it's side. It felt like breaking through invisible boundaries. When I looked back at it in a landscape (horizontal) crop, it looked like succumbing to the deep darkness.
"and its genuinely just feeling into the mood each picture creates and matching it with the energy of the writing. They speak to one another, and after I write a piece I can just select the image that reflects back." -
Aleya and I spent a day working together this spring to create 5 series of photographs she could pair with her writing. The images are as unique and powerful as the experiences that make up so much of our worlds; each in their own way reflected back from memories of our lives or the things we've seen elsewhere over time.
I share about our process in my latest blog post. Click link in bio and look for "Building a Brand Image with Aleya Silk"
Happy Birthday, Ivana! Welcome to a new decade full of passion and growth! Its only when we pause and look back can we see how far we’ve gone and how much we’ve changed. You’re an inspiration in how to live a life of adventure and spiritual journey.
The second image is the first time I photographed you, Gastown Vancouver, 2011. The second image from an incredible adventure in Mérida 2018. We will have to add a third image to reflect the successes and accomplishments you have achieved since then. Proud of you and wishing you a happiest of birthdays!
Once you see the face, you can’t unsee it.
Friday favourite! Each Friday I share a favourite photo from my portfolio. This shot is a new addition, from a visit to the last weekend. Happy Friday!
The stages of an edit: an illustrated look at my editing process
RAW Image - This is what comes up when you first open the image in Lightroom or whatever image processing software you use. I use lightroom, so I’ll reference that.
Apply Preset - A preset is a saved preference of settings and adjustments within Lightroom, the editing software I use. It’s a quick way for me to get 90% of my adjustments done with 1 click of the mouse or to easily match colour settings between different cameras if I was shooting different bodies. It gets the image to a point where I can see the end result in my mind.
Lighting Pass - The exposure can be adjusted through gradients & brushes in Lightroom. My first goal is to get the exposure looking as nicely as possible. For this shot I added a little fill light to the shadows of Candice’s face because the contrast felt a bit high. If I had time or the tools on set, I would have tried to bounce some light in. But the computer can help us out a lot, too.
Colour Pass - I adjust the colour temperature and use the Hue/Saturation/Luminance sliders in Lightroom to bring balance to the colours. My biggest concerns are accurate skin tones and greenery. Sometimes mixed light (such as direct sun and shade) can create colour problems due to the light having a different colour temperature. I will often use a brush tool and adjust the spots individually or try applying specific shades to specific exposure zones using the colour grading panel in adobe lightroom.
Sharpen, Grain, Ship - Lastly I apply a little sharpen to ensure the image remains crisp and clear. I add some grain to my images because I find it breaks up the harsh linear line from highlight to white and allows for a more natural lighting effect. Then I export from Lightroom using the SHIFT+CMD+E export and apply my “Export to Instagram” resizing preset. It compresses the image to look good on the internet and uploads to a dropbox folder so I can access it for posting anywhere I have internet.
Friday Favourites! Each Friday I share a favourite image from my portfolio.
For a few seasons, and and I were teaching filmmaking in Mazatlán, México. I would get up early and walk along the beach. I noticed this guy standing and fishing out in the water and waded out as deep as I could to try and isolate him in the water. I was almost waist deep and after taking this shot began to worry about falling into the ocean with my camera. Thankfully the camera stayed dry.

This is John Pozer ( ). He was my instructor at Film School and many years after I graduated he asked me to take his portrait to use in his book, Primer ( ). He referenced some B&W Portraits of Billy Wilder looking through film stocks as inspiration and he brought out an original B&W print of his film "The Grocer's Wife" for us to use. We played with a lot of ideas and changed out of shorts and into pants and eventually found this frame. I draped the film stock in several rows hanging from a lamp or something to give interesting foreground & background. A single Speedlight off my right shoulder fired through a diffused beauty dish to light the shot. I'm incredibly thankful for John's continued mentorship in my life. Him and his wife are such enjoyable and supportive people and you should know them.
Happy Friday and have a great weekend!
