Today is first day for an artist in residence program with a CBE school. I'll be teaching 350 kids in kindergarten through to grade 6 this week. I'm sure I'll be asleep on my couch at 3:40!!!!⁠ Right about now!!!⁠

Embracing the beauty of winter before the deep freeze set in!

This picture was captured in December, when the temperature wasn't testing our resilience at -35 degrees! 😅

It is true: Winter scenes can be breathtakingly beautiful when it's not bone-chilling outside. Here's to the magic of winter photos and the serene moments they capture like this one.

This young lady is a wonderful photographer herself and loved getting to know her more during one of my summer photo camps a couple years ago.

The calendar has flipped and Grad 2024 feels that much closer!! ⁠

Who has a graduate this year?

I think a lot of you know I teach photography to kids. It's always fun to follow my students on their IG accounts to see what they're doing. In particular, there is one young photo student out in BC who takes her camera out all the time with a friend of hers who I also taught. I started teaching them just after COVID hit when I was providing lots of online classes for kids to give them some creative outlets and connections during that time.

I loved teaching this student. She was a sparkle on the zoom call. She loved learning. She wasn't afraid to experiment and play. And she took all her learning, her curiosity and natural eye to create fabulous, fabulous photos. I know she continues to take lots and lots of photos as I see her posts... and I must admit I feel a little proud every time I see one. To know maybe I had a bit of a part in opening the door to a passion she loves.

and then today I received this!

"I am doing a project for my english class where I have to interview someone who I think is inspirational to me. Would be interested to be interviewed by me? "

My heart is bursting a little bit.

I spent today wrapping up my volunteer training for hospice Calgary's Companion program. Now, i will be paired up with an individual living with an advanced ulness and their family. Ill spend an hour or so with my client every week, with the intention of facilitating relationships , independence and promoting their quality of life. I look forward to learning who my client is and what is important to them.

Blue hour is the time just after sunset when the sun is below the horizon. Heading up the hill in front of the home where I grew up south of Longview at just this time gave a sweet opportunity to play a bit with Hailey.

Kelly Jo Higgins Kuharski will be there for makeup and hair zsh-zsh'ing, wardrobe and posing guidance.

Can't wait for the first one of the year.... well, that's a lie. I can. I am looking forward to a wonderful break and then come January 6th... I'll be able to say "can't wait for the first one of the year!"

My dear friend Amanda Moloney's daughter Kate did an amazing job showcasing the gorgeous indoor space for our 2024 grad photoshoots on February 9th! Can we say STUNNING!?!?!?!

With her help, we were able to capture the essence of the space, showcasing its white walls, exquisite drapes, textured brick walls, and the fantastic play of light—all elements that will contribute to creating unforgettable and stunning graduation portraits.

A huge thanks to Kate for being a part of this preview and adding her charm to the space. So tag the parents of 2024 grads (we know the grads aren't on FB!!!) and let them know about our February offer!

A photo of Reubs that I found on my hard drive today. He helped me with my summer photo camp this past July and this was a pic I took of him when we were out on a photo walk with the kids.

With Hailey turning 18 within a month and looking at this pic of him here, I'm feeling like life is moving fast forward at a super quick rate... and i have muxed feelings about it.

Weather is supposed to be lovely for the weekend again! If anyone would.like outdoor photos i am avaialble!!

In the midst of a stream of fall photos, here's an injection of something different. I was at a volleyball tournament for Reuben's school yesterday. ⁠

It's been a tough tournament for them results-wise. The other teams are just soooo competitive and Reuben's team is 90% grade 10s in a senior high tournament. ⁠
⁠
But this first pic is what I love seeing the most. Team camaraderie. Supporting each other. Making memories as a team. I notice with my sports photography, I get drawn to the images of them coming together as a team as much as the showing skill ones. ⁠

A sweet moment in an energy-filled shoot!

Last month I got to hang out with a family and their kites and breathe in the beautiful air and soak up the gorgeous views at Big Horn Lookout. So much fun!!!

As I work through the many galleries of families and schools I've taken this fall, I am so thankful for everyone who invites me into documenting their lives.

No one has ever said " You know what? I wish we didn't get those photos of all of us together."

The first time I took pictures of this stunning grade 12 student, she was just 3 years old and her brother was a little 10 month old. Their mom is one of my biggest cheerleaders and from the bottom of my heart, I am so grateful for all of their support.

They have come to my Backyard Back to School photos since I started them a number of years ago. We moved out to the park right by my house to give them a different look and voila!!!! Love the result.

Next time I photograph her, she'll be in her grad dress!

Yesterday, I had the honour of photographing the unveiling of the YW Crisis Shelter with the YWCA Calgary staff, volunteers, and their honoured guests and leaders.

What an accomplishment with the opening of their facility. It is a short-stay crisis shelter for women and their children leaving domestic abuse and violence. It provides basic needs, including food and personal items, as well as individual domestic abuse counseling and support. Lots of light. Private rooms with lots of common spaces. It is welcoming, comforting and beautiful. A playground, courtyard, dog run, and rock garden. A welcoming, comforting and beautiful space.

Throughout the day I could feel the pride and emotion that comes with the opening of a building that provides such critical services. So many people pouring their hearts, time and dollars over the past few years and making this a reality today. Thank you to all.
