And now the official announcement …. Well done Anna!
Congratulations to Anna Parrish (they/them), who received the Lieutenant Governor's Medal for Inclusion, Democracy and Reconciliation at our Summer 2024 Graduation ceremonies.
The prestigious award recognizes academic excellence and students who are creating a more welcoming and supportive environment by standing up for those who are more vulnerable.
Anna is a graduate of the Bachelor of Therapeutic Recreation and creator of TransFit, B.C.’s first provincially supported trans-centric fitness program. Their original research project on transgender recreation experiences in the Lower Mainland also won first place at the 2023 Douglas College Student Research Days. Anna uses their research findings to champion trans-inclusive policies and staff training in recreation facilities across the province.
“I wanted to look at what makes recreation better and safer, and what actually works. Rather than focusing on all the barriers that prevent trans people from engaging with recreation, I’d ask what creates more safety and inclusion, and what actually helps people feel they can access things safely,” Anna says.

We are proud to announce that one of our amazing graduates, Anna Parrish, was recognized this month at graduation and received the prestigious Lieutenant Governor's Medal for Inclusion, Democracy and Reconciliation. Anna was selected out of a group of over 50 applicants. They have been a change agent within our program, have done incredible work within the community and continue to advocate and educate on inclusion within recreation. Congratulations Anna!
A bit about the award: This award recognizes students who have promoted diversity and inclusion. Students must demonstrate strong collaboration and unifying efforts, through the promotion and display of tolerance and respect for others.
