Coquitlam City Councillor. Collaborative. Balanced. Approachable. As an avid volunteer, Steve has dedicated his life to serving in the community.

I gratefully acknowledge that we live and work on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem First Nation) and Coast Salish Peoples. We thank the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm who continue to live on these lands and care for them, along with the waters and all that is above and below.

The City of Coquitlam is offering deepest sympathies following a police incident in Coquitlam, which claimed the life of a dedicated RCMP officer and left another injured.

The City was very saddened to learn that two police officers had been injured during a police incident in Coquitlam earlier today, and that Constable Rick O’Brien, a member of the Ridge Meadows RCMP detachment, ultimately succumbed to his injuries.

The BC Wildfire Service is assisting Metro Vancouver with the Minnekhada High Knoll (V12537) fire located at Minnekhada Regional Park in the City of Coquitlam. The park is now closed.

For updates on the situation, go to:

• Metro Vancouver Regional Parks or,
• on Twitter

Aerial and ground resources continue to be deployed to this incident. A BC Wildfire Service unit crew and Metro Vancouver crews continue to action the fire.

Last evening, a civilian drone was flown over the fire at approximately 7 p.m. We would like to remind the public that the use of drones over an active wildfire is strictly prohibited. Safety is always our priority, and the use of drones not only impedes operations but could put firefighters and pilots at risk.

Today, I had the opportunity to help out Immigrant Link Centre Society’s weekly food distribution at Coquitlam Continuing Education.

The incredible dedication of the volunteers should be recognized. The amount of nearly expired food they collect and distribute to local families is tremendous. I’ll be back again!
