Talking about Refugees and Immigrants: A Glossary.
For the next couple of weeks, we will explore the many different terms that are used to describe refugees and immigrants.
Using terms properly is an important way to treat people with respect, promoting inclusivity.
Don't be alarmed when you see ghosts, goblins, princesses and monsters making their way through your neighbourhood this Thursday! They are celebrating Halloween! They may even come to your door, in search of candy!
Halloween takes place on October 31. It is a time when people dress up in costumes, go trick-or-treating, and carve jack-o'-lanterns from hollowed out pumpkins. Ghosts and witches are popular costumes of the children who go from house to house saying, “Trick-or-treat!” The treat is usually candy.
Join the Celebration:
🎃Prepare Your Pumpkin!
Get your pumpkin ready by carving it into a classic jack-o'-lantern. Light it up and place it on your doorstep to signal that you're giving out treats!
👉Check out these instructions on carving pumpkins: https://www.instructables.com/How-to-Carve-a-Jacko-lantern/
🍬Stock Up on Treats!
Ensure you have plenty of goodies on hand—think chocolate, chips, and assorted candies—to delight the little trick-or-treaters who visit your home.
👻Costume Fun!
While dressing up is optional if you're handing out candy, consider putting your little ones in their best costumes if you plan to take them trick-or-treating. Just remember to layer them up; Halloween nights can get chilly!
🕰Children usually begin trick-or-treating as the sun sets and wrap up their adventures by 7 PM.
🏠Here are some signs that a house is participating in Halloween trick-or-treating:
🎃Lit Jack-o'-Lanterns: If you see carved pumpkins with lights inside, it usually means the homeowners are ready for trick-or-treaters.
🦇Decorations: Look for Halloween decorations, such as spooky lights, ghosts, bats, or cobwebs. These often indicate a welcoming atmosphere for visitors.
💡Open Door or Porch Lights: A house with its front porch light on is a traditional sign that they are giving out candy.

Canadian Thanksgiving, celebrated on the second Monday in October, has roots that trace back to early European settlers in the 17th century. Initially, it was a harvest festival to give thanks for a successful crop season, influenced by both Indigenous traditions and European harvest festivals. The first official Thanksgiving was proclaimed in 1879, and over time, it evolved into a national holiday. Today, Canadians celebrate with family gatherings, feasting on turkey, and reflecting on gratitude, much like their American counterparts, but with distinct cultural nuances.
🦃🥧🎃👪🦃🥧🎃👪

WELCOMING WEEK
Melanie of has a special message to share.
WELCOMING WEEK - Yafa Goawily's story.
WELCOMING WEEK - Mir Hussain Razawi's story.
My name is Mir Hussain Razawi I would like to share my story: Experiencing a Warm Welcome in Cornwall, Ontario,
When I first arrived with my family on 3th May 2024 in Cornwall, Ontario, I was filled with a mix of emotions—hope, uncertainty, and a bit of fear about what lay ahead. I had left everything familiar behind and was stepping into the unknown. But from the moment I set foot in this community, I was met with a warmth and kindness that I never expected.
We were eagerly expecting the arrival of our newborn! The community hospital welcomed us with open arms, and the kindness and care we received from all the nurses and doctors was truly heartwarming. We are deeply grateful for their support during this special time.I'm thrilled to announce that my daughter was born safely on July 5, 2024! At the community hospital we are overjoyed and grateful for this precious blessing.
The people of Cornwall welcomed me with open arms. From the volunteers at the Newcomer Employment Welcome Services (NEWS) to the friendly neighbors who greeted me on the street, everyone seemed genuinely happy to have me here. It wasn’t just about offering assistance or providing resources—it was the small gestures, like a smile, a handshake, or a simple "Welcome to our community," that made all the difference.
Cornwall didn’t just offer me a place to live—it gave me a home. The support from the community made me believe in the possibility of a new beginning. The Eastern Ontario Local Immigration Partnership (EOLIP) played a crucial role in this, connecting me with others who had walked a similar path and showing me that I wasn’t alone.
As I’ve settled into my new life here, I’ve come to appreciate not just the physical beauty of Cornwall, with its rivers and parks, but the beauty of its people—their generosity, their openness, and their unwavering belief in the power of community.
Today, I feel like I belong. I’m proud to call Cornwall my home, and I’m grateful for the warm welcome that made it all possible. This city has shown me that no matter where you come from, you can always find a place to belong. And for that, I will always be thankful.
I want to express my deepest gratitude to the Government of Canada and the immigration services for bringing us to safety from a difficult situation. Your compassion and support have given us a second chance at life, and we are forever thankful for the opportunity to build a brighter future here.
Thank you for your kindness and for opening the doors of this beautiful country to us.
I am committed to doing my best to contribute to the growth and prosperity of Canada. I will work hard to build a better future, and I will raise my children to do the same. Together, we will strive to make this country even greater, ensuring that our efforts today help create a brighter tomorrow for all Canadians.
Ottawa, September 13, 2024—The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, issued the following statement on the start of Welcoming Week 2024:
“By celebrating our strengths and differences, we create a community where everyone feels included and valued. With the exception of Indigenous Peoples, all of us trace our stories back to immigration. Whether your family has been here for generations or you have recently arrived, we can all benefit from a welcoming community.
Most of us can relate to what it’s like to be in a new place. Whether it’s a new country, school, neighbourhood or workplace, we understand the importance of feeling welcomed. By connecting through these shared experiences and extending a message of welcome, we foster a sense of belonging for everyone, and make our communities more diverse and inclusive, driving greater success for all.
By fostering an inclusive environment, we acknowledge that immigrants are part of shaping Canada’s future. According to Statistics Canada, as of 2021, immigrants aged 25 to 54 made up 1 in 5 workers in construction; 1 in 3 workers in professional, scientific and technical services; and more than 1 in 3 workers in the transportation, warehousing, accommodation and food services sectors, which highlights the importance of newcomers to the Canadian labour market, particularly in occupations for which workers are in shortage.
To kick off Welcoming Week, I look forward to welcoming new citizens to the Canadian family at a citizenship ceremony today, in Ottawa. It is always a great honour for me to witness this significant moment in a newcomer’s life.
I encourage you to share how you’re celebrating on social media by using the hashtag . Your actions can inspire others to create more welcoming communities. I wish everyone a wonderful Welcoming Week!”

📜🏞️ The Lost Villages, once home to over 6,500 people, were submerged beneath Lake St. Lawrence in the 1950s to make way for the St. Lawrence Seaway and International Hydro Electric project. Despite their physical disappearance, the memories of these communities live on in the Lost Villages Museum in Long Sault!
The Lost Villages Historical Society is dedicated to preserving this history through educational programs and museum archives at the Lost Villages Museum in Ault Park, Long Sault Their mission is to educate the public, especially students, about these vanished communities and their impact.
Be sure to stop by before they close for the season on September 2nd! You won't want to miss their Civil War reenactment happening all day on August 24th!
