An extraordinary year of giving, in support of the Children’s Treatment Centre in Cornwall, continued on Monday.
Cornwall residents Bill and Darlene McGimpsey made a $10,000 donation to the CTC, the organization that has helped thousands of children in the region since opening 27 years ago in 1996.
“(The CTC is) something we wish didn’t have to exist, but there’s a need for it and we’re very lucky to have it in our community,” Bill McGimpsey said. “The main reason we make the donation is because we believe the time to get (kids and youths the help needed when dealing with abuse) is early on, during the childhood years.”
McGimpsey said it’s all about investing in children and youths in the community, and his family again this year joined other individuals and groups/organizations who’ve made a difference in allowing the CTC to continue offering the services it does.
The generosity came from across the region, and in June included the Sommers family in South Glengarry pledging a $35,000 yearly donation for 15 years. Also in 2023, the Robert Campeau Family Foundation, which has donated millions of dollars in both Canada and the U.S., donated $105,000 to the CTC.
There were many other supporters, and on Monday at the McGimpsey donation ceremony, Don Fairweather said the collective support continues to be crucial for the organization.
“We’re very blessed that there are people (like the McGimpseys), that year after year we have donors who step up – they allow us to continue to provide the services that we do,” he said.
Donations in recent years have been vital in the CTC’s sustainability, the centre limited in how it held some of its major fundraisers during and after the pandemic. But, slowly, and thankfully, more normal times have returned.
“We’re back to running face-to-face (fundraisers),” Fairweather said.
Monday’s donation was being made for a fourth straight year, the funding provided by Bill McGimpsey Insurance Inc. with the support of The Co-operators Advisor Community Fund; the fund is made available to further support a commitment to building community leadership and resiliency.
Since the CTC opened in 1996, nearly 3,000 children from over 2,500 families have attended the centre, and there continues to be a big need for its services.

Robert Campeau foundation comes through for Children's Treatment Centre in Cornwall!

ALEXANDRIA — A foundation that made a huge difference in the services the Children’s Treatment Centre was able to provide during the pandemic has come through with another big contribution in 2023.

The Robert Campeau Family Foundation has donated $105,000 to the CTC, continuing its support for the organization that stretches back nearly two decades, to 2004.
“The Children’s Treatment Centre is very valued, it’s been near and dear to the foundation for many years,” said foundation vice-chair/director Judith Wilcox on Friday.
Wilcox said it was striking to the foundation during the pandemic there was a growing waiting list for services at the CTC. So, that led to a big donation back then, one the CTC said allowed it to add 14 hours of counselling time per week to address the waiting list.
The Robert Campeau Family Foundation has donated millions of dollars in both Canada and the U.S.; it’s a private foundation in founded in Canada in 1980, and with the purpose to support civic and social qualified charitable organizations.
There’s a Cornwall connection. Robert Campeau, who passed away in 2017 at age 94, was born in Sudbury, Ont., but he also has roots in the Seaway City. He would become a renowned developer first in Cornwall, and later in Ottawa, including a portfolio of numerous government buildings, such as the Place de Ville office towers complex and others in the capital. The company had locations including in Toronto and Houston, Texas, and was “regarded as one of Canada’s premiere developers,” Wilcox said, noting that Campeau even did developing in Germany in the late 1980s after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Wilcox said the foundation has over the years been very supportive of several causes in Cornwall and area, including with support for United Way Centraide SDG, the Agapè Centre and – very recently – it was a major donor to Habitat and Humanity Cornwall and the Counties for its current build in Maxville.
Wilcox herself has championed the CTC for years, and in 2014 was named winner of the CTC’s prestigious President’s Award. Wilcox, of Wilcox Law Office in Alexandria, has in more recent years had the firm donate $2,000 to the CTC each Christmas so it can purchase gifts for children.
Donations are of great value in the CTC’s sustainability – and even more vital in the last few years, the centre only beginning to again hold its major fundraisers in formats similar to the in-person events that were held for years before the pandemic.
The CTC has helped thousands of children in the region since opening 27 years ago

The 2023 Charity Bowl is set for Wednesday, October 11th for 6 pm at Joe St Denis Football Field. Whether or not it's the Holy Trinity Falcons or the St. Joseph's Panthers who emerge victorious on the field, as was the case last year, the big winner will be the Children's Treatment Centre who will be the recipient of funds raised from the game. The 2022 game ended in a convincing 37-6 win for the Panthers over the Falcons which pushed St. Joe's win streak in the big game to six in a row. Spirited pep rallies were held at both schools and students will be dressing in their school colours and pitching in $2 to get a game bracelet to attend tomorrow night's much anticipated showdown. Admission for other family members and those in the community will be $5. Come on out and enjoy some great football while supporting the Children's Treatment Centre - a true community gem!

A Special Bond-themed night at Port Theatre in Cornwall for
Children’s Treatment Centre

Memories of this Children's Treatment Centre fundraiser could last forever.
A father and son team in Cornwall has planned a James Bond themed event that'll have the feel of a Hollywood premiere, a special screening of the iconic 1995 spy film GoldenEye on
Oct. 21, at the Port Theatre that will look even better than when it opened 80 years ago.
“It'll be a very luxurious evening,” promised Sean Adams, a Cornwall lawyer who has spent years both behind the scenes in fundraising and out front as a public face of the CTC, the organization that has helped thousands of children in the region since opening 27 years ago in 1996.
The event will have a very special guest from Los Angeles – GoldenEye screenwriter Bruce Feirstein in attendance to introduce the movie and have a question-and-answer period afterwards.
Many members of the Cornwall community that are starring in this special night, supporters of the event including Dr. Dany Tombler – he's made available a 1965 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud for guests to enjoy while strolling the red carpet on the way into the venue – Tom Kaneb and Mike Aube with their generous donations, the crew at Clean All, the team at Dubuc Eye Care Centre who'll make hundreds of parking spots available for the gathering.
The other member of the Adams team making the memories happen is Sean's son Nikolai, a Cornwall movie critic whose filmizon.com is presenting the event.
“I'm kind of like (Sean's) wingman,” said Nikolai, of course a long-time CTC supporter but who for this fundraiser took a leading role when he brainstormed ideas to support the Port Theatre on Montreal Road, a refurbished and once-again popular entertainment hall that's in the process of having its historic exterior sign and marquee restored.
With one of Sean Adams' major CTC fundraising projects, the annual Boxing for Change, KO'D by COVID -19 a few years ago, the family began thinking outside the ring at ideas for raising money for a vital centre that has its service in constant demand. What the Adamses have come up with includes a live auction hosted by a professional auctioneer, unique items up for grab such as three separate signed photographs from Roger Moore, George Lazenby and Richard Kiel (aka Jaws), and original movie posters from multiple Bond films that have been donated by OC Dugout of Anaheim, Cali., and Hollywood Canteen of Toronto.
There are limited-edition posters designed by Stacey Case of the Cornwall Stamp Co. available for purchase, and the first 150 guests to arrive receiving a long-stem rose from Flowers Cornwall and with a number attached and for an opportunity to win a specially-made diamond necklace courtesy of Pommier Jewellers.
Bond themes will play over the speakers as guests arrive, ushers from Toronto clad in black tuxedos will greet them, attendees will have their photo taken with a lifesize standee of Pierce Brosnan, massive original French Grande posters for the three films written by Feirstein will be on display, and beverages including James Bond's favourite from bars set up throughout the venue are available.
“(Martinis) shaken, not stirred,” Sean Adams said.
The event managed to get expedited approval to be held – organizers only got word in August that it would be a go for this fall. And, having Feirstein in attendance is considered quite a coup – the writer of the first three Pierce Brosnan Bond features, including Tomorrow Never Dies, and The World is Not Enough, will be graciously flying in from L.A. to engage the gathering the Port.
Do note it's a “no cellphone event,” the Bond franchise being very protective of its property. That means the Oct 21 spectacle will truly be for Cornwall eyes only, but, several professional photographers will be covering every angle at the theatre including from Roy's Studio and Icelevel Photography; pictures will be made available free of charge not long after the soirée.
Tickets are very limited and cost $70, which includes a drink ticket, and are available at the Port Theatre box office, open from 1 to 4 p.m. daily, or when a movie is being shown. Doors will open at 5 p.m., with the show starting promptly at 6:30 p.m.

Come on out and enjoy this fabulous and always entertaining event which never ceases to disappoint on the creativity and sheer spookiness values. The 2023 proceeds will be distributed to the Children's Treatment Centre, Hospice Cornwall, Ronald McDonald House Ottawa, Cornwall Canada Day, Comfort Quilts and Centre 105.

Renowned artist Susan Aglukark was effusive in her praise for the Children’s Treatment Centre of Cornwall and Area on Monday morning, as she helped kick off the annual Celebrity Walk and Breakfast fundraising campaign. Aglukark spoke to a packed room at the Best Western Parkway Inn, and shared some of the songs she’s performed throughout her career chosen because each of them marked a key point in her journey as she continues to heal from the trauma of an assault that happened when she was seven years old.

“What you are offering here (at the centre) is a safe place— and the most important thing a child needs is a safe space,” Aglukark said. “You are creating and allowing a space to just be… because you can’t rush healing.”

Aglukark spoke about her experiences after “the lights shut off and I got very, very confused” following her abuse, particularly when the first significant steps that happened in 1990-91when she moved from Arviat, Nunavut, which was still part of the Northwest Territories at the time. She said she had to leave Arviat because that physical distance was the only way she wouldn’t keep seeing her abuser -a man who was released following his sentence for her abuse but continued to abuse other children in the community.

Working as a translator within the federal government led to an opportunity where she wanted to share some of the poems she’d written. A poem she wrote while attending high school in Yellowknife was recorded and went into heavy rotation on MuchMusic, which led to an inquiry from the CBC on whether she had more music to share.
“In that early writing, I now understand was expression,” Aglukark said. “Whatever was going on was really, really good for me.”

Those first forays into the music industry were happenstances, as she now describes them, that allowed her to connect with and be a part of a community of artists while she continued her healing journey. As she continued to write and record, she created other moments to exhale — as she described it — and find an ability to come to terms with the damage done to her by her abuser.

“It’s been a privilege to share one healed-enough story with you,” Aglukark said somewhat self-depricatingly, noting how since the early 1990s she’s been able to come to points where she could say she was fine, that she was doing well.

The fundraiser continues through the fall season. To join and support a Celebrity Walk and Breakfast team, or create your own team, contact the centre at 613-933-4400.
Founded in 1996, the centre has helped over 2,700 children who are victims of abuse by providing counselling and support at no cost to them or their families. The centre relies on the communities of Cornwall, SDG, and Akwesasne to support its work as it receives no government funding.

The Children's Treatment Centre wishes to thank and congratulate Katherine MacDonald and her son, Liam along with their team of supporters for organizing the inaugural Glengarry Bike-a-thon. This event took place under sunny skies on Saturday, September 9, 2023 .in Alexandria, Ontario. Glengarrians, in their true supportive nature came out in impressive numbers and enjoyed the option of participating in 20 km or 10 km cycling routes or a five kilometre walk inside Island Park. A group of SDG OPP officers from the highway safety division helped prepare a barbeque lunch which added to the quality of the event and demonstrated true community partner support. Other local supporters included the Alexandria branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, Tapis Ranger, McDonell-Levert Insurance and Giant Tiger. Katherine MacDonald and her husband Alistair MacDonald, Owners of Munro & Morris/Wilson Funeral Homes were instrumental in helping secure a satellite branch of Children's Treatment Centre in Alexandria. Katherine is hoping that the $10,000 raised from the event will increase the satellite office from part-time to full-time status as the Alexandria office serves about 10 per cent of the children who receive treatment through the Centre. Katherine and her son Liam will be gathering input from participants to help build upon the many successes of the 2023 inaugural bike-a-thon for the 2024 edition. The Centre thanks the organizers, sponsors and participants for their generoisty in support of a superb cause - The CTC Alexandria satellite office and the children it serves.
