Did you know that even a minor fall can be a major health event for older adults?

Walking, stretching, and lifting are so important because an active elder is stronger and safer than a sedentary one.

Here are a few other tips to reduce your loved one's risk of falls.

1. Add non-slip mats, a grab bar, a shower seat, and a handheld shower head.
2. Keep the stairs clear, add coloured paint or tape to differentiate between steps, and install handrails or a stair lift.
3. Use non-slip shoes that fit well, and consider Velcro straps instead of laces.
4. Invest in a cane or walker and get training from an occupational therapist on how to properly use them.
5. Install better, brighter lighting and assess the location of the switches.
6. Remove hazards such as extension cords, clutter, and excess furniture.

Struggling to get your loved one on board with receiving care? Here are 5 tips that might make a difference:

👉 Involve them in the decision-making process and acknowledge their wishes and concerns.
👉 Consider a trial period so they can experience the benefits of care before making a decision.
👉 Seek a second opinion from a sibling, close friend, or medical provider to provide a different perspective.
👉 Present them with a list of the ways that care can benefit them.
👉 Be patient and maintain a positive outlook. It often takes multiple conversations to find a solution everyone agrees on.

A: Trick question! Protecting your skin from the sun is important throughout your life and your risk for skin cancer continues to increase until around 85 years old.

This month is Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month, so here are the five ways you can stay safe in the sun at any age:

1. Stay in the shade.

Though dementia research continues to progress, we know that many versions of this common disorder are still not entirely curable.

Instead of focusing on reversing memory loss and cognitive decline, dementia treatment frequently relies on slowing the progression of the disease. Slowing the speed at which dementia progresses gives seniors more time to spend with friends and family members.

Learn about the different ways seniors can slow the progression of dementia on our blog now: https://www.homecareassistanceedmonton.ca/how-to-prevent-dementia-progression/

Like most of us, you probably want your parents to age at home. But as they get older, there may be little things that worry you—like how forgetful Dad is or whether Mom can still drive safely.

How do you know when it's time to bring in more support? How do you spot the warning signs if you're a long-distance caregiver?

Some things to watch and listen for include: wandering, falling, erratic driving; weight loss or difficulty with medication management. Remember, it's better to address a problem when it's small than wait until the situation becomes more serious. It's easier to convince someone to accept help now than possibly have them resist later on.

The occasional treat can be fun, and usually isn't a big problem for most older adults. But did you know that older adults should stick to a nutritious diet, such as the Mediterranean diet?

This particular diet has become very popular over the last few years, and many experts agree it’s one of the best options for aging adults who want to enhance all aspects of their health. In addition to being excellent for health, this diet is also packed with a wide variety of tasty foods seniors are sure to love.

Check out our blog to learn about some of the main reasons your senior loved one should try the Mediterranean diet: https://www.homecareassistanceedmonton.ca/why-should-people-over-65-adhere-to-the-mediterranean-diet/

Mother's Day is just around the corner - do you have any plans to celebrate?

For those whose mothers or other loved ones have dementia or limited mobility, Mother's Day can seem like a burden. But it doesn't have to be! Of course the holiday may not look like it once did—but there are still plenty of activities you can do with your loved ones on Mother's Day.

There are many ways you can celebrate the women in your life, no matter their age.

Did you know that poor judgment is a common early sign of dementia?

Dementia is often associated with memory loss first, but it's not the only red flag. Poor judgment includes actions like:

∙ Neglecting personal hygiene
∙ Ignoring a serious or concerning medical problem, such as an infected cut or bad cough
∙ Wearing a sweater and jeans on an extremely warm day.

No matter what stage your loved one is at, our team can help. https://www.homecareassistanceedmonton.ca/dementia-home-care/

Mother's Day is the perfect day to honour the mothers and other great women in our lives, especially those who had a major role in raising us.

However, many families feel overlooked and like they cannot celebrate Mother's Day the same as everyone else because their mother or loved one has dementia. Although Mother’s Day may look different for these families, there are still many great ways you can celebrate.

Here are some tips you might try to make the holiday better:

- Ask for support, if needed
- Smile and keep a positive attitude
- Listen to your mom's favourite songs together
- Do something simple, but new together (painting, crafting, photography, etc.)
- Cook her favourite food together
- Share her life stories with others
