Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry - University of Alberta, Alberta Medical Association Rural Health Professions Action Plan
Dr. Aaron Johnston will be presenting at the 2024 RhPAP Rural Community Conference in Wainwright, October 8 to 10. He will discuss details of the expansion of the University of Calgary's medical school program into Lethbridge. He will also expand how the introduction of these med students to surrounding rural communities will benefit those communities in the future.
As well, Dr. Johnston will invite input from conference attendees on their thoughts regarding the expansion of med school into Lethbridge.
RhPAP is proud to offer funding for rural healthcare physicians and other health professionals pursuing continuing professional development to enhance their skills. 🧤
In 2023/24, 40 team-based applications were approved which allowed 427 health professionals to benefit from training. 👩⚕️

Shanda Berns is the Senior Manager of RhPAP's Community Development and Engagement Team. She will host a session at the 2024 RhPAP Rural Community Conference that will focus on attraction and retention of rural health professionals.
Conference attendees will be put into breakout groups with members of other attraction and retention committees from other parts of the province.

Continuing Professional Development - Rural Health Professions Action Plan Rural practice means that no two days are alike. We know that it’s imperative for individual healthcare providers and teams to have access to ongoing educational opportunities. That way they can be confident that they are providing the best care possible to rural Albertans.
🤝RhPAP proudly partners with rural attraction and retention (A&R) committees from across the province.
👨⚕️Together, we highlight work and lifestyles for post-secondary participants and prospective health professionals, and celebrate the dedication of those already in the field.
In 2023/24, we supported 59 A&R committees, representing 169 rural Alberta communities.

Through Let's Go Rural! one-day High School Events, grades 10 through 12 get the chance to learn about healthcare careers available in their local community and try their hands at various healthcare skills like IV starts and suturing!
🏥While at weekend Post-secondary Events, nursing and medical students are able to experience the charm and lifestyle of living and working in a rural community while getting to know the local healthcare team.

Physician Skills Enrichment Training - Rural Health Professions Action Plan The Peter K. Lindsay Enrichment Training Program is intended to assist physicians in rural or regional communities to upgrade existing skills or gain new skills in order to meet the medical needs of the community or surrounding areas.
RhPAP provides funding that allows Alberta Medical Association's Physician Locum Services to offer short-term locum service for family physicians in rural areas. 🤝
In 2023/24, 775 requests for locum coverage were filled in more than 50 rural Alberta communities through the funding. 🏥
