CW: Sexual violence
The recent report on sexual and gender-based violence at Alberta's post-secondaries revealed some disturbing facts, including around student knowledge of consent.
CAUS is calling for action on this issue, and we look forward to working with Minister to support safer schools for all students. Check out slide 5 to see what our key asks are!
CW: Sexual violence
Today, the Government of Alberta shared the data collected on sexual and gender-based violence at postsecondary institutions. The results of this report are shocking, with 50% of students reporting that they have experienced this violence while attending school.
CAUS calls for immediate action to be taken on this critical issue. Our schools need funding, and support, to create cultures of consent. Our students deserve to attend school with a sense of safety. We want to work with the Minister of Advanved Education to fund and support prevention efforts.
We believe survivors, and we will fight for action to be taken on the crisis of sexual and gender-based violence.
With an increasing need for mental health supports, affordability measures, and student-led dialogue, student leaders across Alberta welcome the new mandate letter provided to the Minister of Advanced Education
Notably, this work is a starting point, as ongoing efforts are needed to ensure the success of Alberta's post-secondary students. We look forward to future collaborations with the Government of Alberta to support our students, who will be leading our province's future.

brings welcome funding to our post-secondary system, but more support remains needed. Student food insecurity remains at an all-time high, as does the need for mental health resources and other programming.
Budget 2023 is a great start, but shouldn't be all!
We appreciate the ongoing coverage of yesterday's funding announcement, particularly the focus on the ongoing student food security crisis. Moving forward, CAUS is hopeful that we will continue to see increased funding to address this urgent issue!

CAUS's statement Athabasca University:
Students' voices and votes are not performative. We are essential to the functioning of every post-secondary institution within Alberta, and deserve to be treated as the critical stakeholders that we are.
We stand with Athabasca University Students' Union (AUSU)
Along with our own 2023 budget submission, which focused on student affordability, CAUS is also a signatory to the budget submission on open educational resources (OER).
Check out this article, which highlights the cost savings of OER in Alberta:
Opinion: There is already a solution for easing high cost of post-secondary textbooks B.C., Ontario and other provinces are funding open educational resources. Alberta should too.
Now more than ever, students need support!
Amidst an increasing cost of living crisis, CAUS is fighting to ensure students are supported by the Government of Alberta.

Then come join Public Interest Alberta’s discussion on a Better Way Alberta. Student leaders, faculty & support staff representatives and experts from the Parkland Institute will be participating in a round table discussion about what a well-funded and accessible Post-Secondary Education system could look like.
We will be re-imagining a university and college system that works for Albertans. We need a PSE system that is accessible—with high-speed internet across the entire province and with non-repayable student bursaries in all programs and institutions. We need any future Government of Alberta to stop micro-managing our universities and colleges to restore the institutional autonomy that makes these institutions strong and resilient.
Please join us at a university near you to be part of this important discussion of what a Better Way Alberta would look like at your institution. Food and drink will be provided!
Today, on the National day for Truth and Reconciliation, we at CAUS are highlighting our priorities on strengthening Indigenous futures. Reconciliation is not a one day event and the ongoing legacies of Residential Schools require us to always be advocating for Indigenous students.
As recognized by the Assembly of First Nations, Post-secondary education is an inherent and Treaty right. In order for Post-secondary education to be accessible CAUS is calling on the Minster of Advanced Education and the Government of Alberta to invest capital in recruiting more Indigenous learners. We need to be actively recruiting students from reserves, rural areas, and urban centers. Additionally, CAUS is calling on the Minister of Advanced Education and the Government of Alberta to invest in cultural and educational Indigenous centers across all campuses, either by providing funding to the centers directly or through student associations where appropriate.
