Are you looking at replacing or getting a new hot water tank? Here are some factors to consider:

We have all been there at some point in time, where we run out of hot water mid shower because we forgot we are running the washing machine or we didn’t wait long enough after the person showering before us. This is because traditional tank water heaters stores large amounts of hot water until it’s needed to be used. Cold water then replaces the water that is being used to be heated and stored for future use. Meaning household size plays a big role in deciding the right size tank for you so you or your loved ones don’t shower in cold water ! Tank water heaters come in many different sizes, look at our size chart to get a general idea of what size might suite your situation best.

More things to consider :
-Now tankless heaters are the most cost effective option and energy saving, however are a higher up front price (swipe to the next slide for more info) not only does it require less space but because the hot water is on demand the water temperature is steady. They can be 8-14% more energy efficient than your traditional hot water tanks.

-Natural gas water heaters are more expensive than electric water heaters. However natural gas water heaters will use 10% less energy.

💦 If your water heater is more than 10 years old, it maybe time to consider replacing it. With proper care and maintenance hot water tanks can last anywhere from 6-12 years. Tankless water heaters can last more than 20 years.

🚿 Maintenance is important for the longevity of your water tank. The tank should be drained, flushed and cleaned once a year. (If you live in an area with harder water, you may want to consider doing this every 6 months to prevent sediment buildup)! During this time it’s a good idea to check the temperature and pressure safety release as well.

- For electric hot water tank owners, be sure to check the wire connections to ensure no corrosion or burning.

- Gas Hot water tank owners. Examining the burner is important to ensure the flame characteristics are good!

🚰 Check to ensure your water is clear .
-Rusty or metallic smelling water can mean the tank is underworking, the unit or an inside part could be rusting and needs replacing.
-Cloudy water could be an indicator of sediment buildup.

👨🏻‍🔧Do you hear a knocking noise ? This noise could be an indication of sediment buildup. As the sediment hardens, it may move around the tank resulting in the knocking, gargling of even rumbling noise you hear.

💧Is your tank leaking? It is important to replace your hot water tank immediately as neglecting a leak can not only cause water damage to the home,

As the cold weather is rolling in here are some tips to winterization your home:

🪠Ensure garden hoses are disconnected from exterior taps then drained and stored away.

🪠Shut off any water feeding underground sprinkler systems and have the sprinkler system professionally blown out.

🪠Ensure your eaves troughs and downspouts are clear of leaves and other debris.

🪠Ensure that furnace exhaust and intake pipes are clear of obstructions, leaves and other debris.

🪠Ensure every family member knows where and how to shut off the main water shut off in the home in the event of a water pipe failure.

🪠Ensure there is always heat in your home when you’re away. Have someone check your home daily to ensure that everything is fine.

🪠Post emergency contact numbers where they can easily be seen. These may include your plumbing companies number, electricians number, Fire and Flood Restoration Company, Roofing Company, and of course 911 for police, ambulance or fire.

🪠Ensure smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are not out of date and are functioning accordingly.

🪠If you have heat tapes on your water supply piping ensure that the power outlets they are plugged into are working and where possible check the heat tape to see if they are functioning and are not chewed, cracked, brittle or cut.

🪠Ensure that all entry ways into the home are properly sealed to prevent unnecessary heat loss. These may include around penetrations for wiring, Air conditioning lines, dryer and furnace vents.

🪠Have repaired any leaking faucets, running toilets or dripping pipes.

Thursday’s Tips and Tricks from us here at 1st Choice Plumbing and Drain Cleaning. 👨🏻‍🔧

- 🚰 Don’t pour Grease or Oil down your drains! Oil and grease will build up over time. Little by little that build up of oil will clog your pipes, resulting in having to give us a call.

- 🚽 Be mindful of what you flush. As much as some Tampons and wipes say on the packaging “flushable”, that is not the actual case! This can lead to sewage blockages that can potentially cause sewage back flow.

- 🪠Make sure your main sewer drain is accessible. While your plumbing is typically out of sight, it is important to have a clear path to the main sewer drain in case we are called. This ensures we are able to come in quickly and efficiently fixing the sewer blockage or any other issues you may be having.

- 🎛️Know the location of Shut off Valves. Plumbing is something we don’t actively learn about, but understanding what to do in case of an emergency is key! In case a pipe bursts, by knowing where the shut offs are and knowing how to shut off the water quickly will minimize the damage until help (that means us) arrive!

- 👨🏻‍🔧Fix leaks promptly, unfortunately leaks won’t fix themselves. So ignoring the problem will not make it go away, in fact it can worsen and cause greater damage if not taken care of when noticed immediately.

- 🚿 Regularly clean shower heads and Aerators. Remove that build up of sediment, mold and bacteria will improve the water pressure for your nice steamy showers. But don’t stop at the shower head, we reccomend doing your faucets too! It’s as simple as unscrewing the head and soaking it in some white vinegar for 30 to 60 minutes. Do this every few months and you will have continuous good flow of water.
