Why is this election critical?
Most political analysts believe that this election is too close to call with no party having a clear lead. Further, they say, it could well come down to one or two seats as to who will form the next provincial government.
Seats in Calgary and Lethbridge’s two ridings have been flagged as key in the struggle between the the NDP and the UCP because they could go to either party.
Lethbridge could well be the determining factor to if the NDP can push out the UCP government. In addition to provincial governance and policies an NDP win would have dramatic repercussions at a National level.
The current UPC provincial government has stood up strongly against some very controversial moves by the federal Liberal government. Natural resources, private citizens rights concerning property ownership, and censorship are areas where the provincial UCP and Federal Liberals have faces off against each other.
If the NDP are successful many believe that much of the provinces opposition, at least in real terms would end. Many feel this would substantially damage the efforts currently underway to curtail Federal overreach in the areas mentioned and damage the chances of a win for the legal challenge against the OIC gun ban and related issues.
As most members of our club know the OIC sidestepped legal debate and democratic process to ban thousands of legally acquired, used and stored firearm types, directly or indirectly in the name of Public Safety. Although called an ‘Assault Weapon’ ban many of the fi****ms were ordinary hunting and sporting guns enjoyed legally by carefully vetted and legally licensed Canadians.
Although the firearm and private property rights issues affect many members of our community and over 2.5 million others like us across Canada they are far from being the only ones that could be substantially effected or end with a change in government on May 29th
We will be looking at these concerns, the parties official positions and local candidates’ opinions leading up to the election. If you are a club member you will receive regular email updates and can visit our website lfga.club or here for further information.
The candidates for Lethbridge are as follows.
Shannon Phillips is the NDP candidate in Lethbridge-West.
Cheryl Seaborn, a former UCP constituency president will be running against her.
Pat Chizek will represent the Liberal Party as a third option for voters in Lethbridge West.
Nate Neudorf, UCP cabinet minister and deputy premier is the incumbent in Lethbridge East.
Rob Miyashiro a two term member of Lethbridge city council is running for the NDP against Neudorf in the two candidate race.
Please ensure you are registered and have what you need to vote before May 17th. PLEASE use one of the advance polls if you will be out of town or busy on Election Day May 29th.
