Any tips on dealing with porcupines?

The porcupines are back... An update about life with porcupines and some fennel inspiration

Photos from Spring Tide Farm's post 06/25/2024

Spring is always a wild ride full of ups and downs. We’ve been disappointed by our peas and bolting Napa cabbage (something I’ve never seen before!), but we have flowers earlier than ever before and that’s a huge win! If you recall way back in October, we planted a trial bed of flowers in a caterpillar tunnel. A mix of foxglove, snapdragons, orlaya, daucus, scabiosa and more were seeded late summer, planted mid fall and covered with two layers of row cover in a tunnel all winter long. Unfortunately this tunnel blew off during a late winter storm and we were hit with temperatures of 10 below the following night that killed all of eucalyptus (which had survived so beautifully all winter!). Aside from the eucalyptus, everyone else survived the winter and this surprise cold snap which has resulted in us having flowers available earlier than ever before! We don’t grow a ton of flowers, but it’s such a treat to enjoy these beautiful blooms for a longer season. 🌼🌱

Our annuals are also ahead of schedule despite being planted around the same time as last years. We are trialing growing all of our annuals, except sunflowers, in a caterpillar tunnel. Last year’s rains left our flower patch in mushy, moody distress, so we’re trying to adapt and offer them a bit more protection from the elements. We’ll see how they handle the extra heat, but so far so good!

Loads of greens heading to tomorrow! ✨

Today was our first harvest day of the season - always an exciting milestone. We picked the first of our spinach, greens, kale, turnips, radishes and rhubarb. This harvest left us feeling hopeful and optimistic for the growing season to come especially after last season ended abruptly and not as planned. It feels really good to be turning a new leaf! 🌱

Hope to see you at the market!

Become a member of our 2024 CSA program today!

CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. It is a distribution model based on strong relationships and trust between the customers/ members and the farmers. CSA programs cut out the intermediaries, meaning the money you spend on your CSA goes straight back into the farm - and you get your produce fresh and straight from the land.

Membership means committing to support Spring Tide Farm for the entire growing season - through the inevitable ups and downs. By paying the cost of your share upfront, you allow us to have a strong start to the season. A resilient food system is centred around community, we couldn’t do it without you!

This season, you will have a choice between membership styles. We are offering a basket-style vegetable share, a market-style share, and a flower share.

🥕 Basket share - You will receive 7-10 different vegetables every week from June through October. Baskets are farmers’ choice meaning we choose what you receive every week based on what is in-season and available. Flowers are not included in this share, but can be purchased separately.

🍅 Market share - This membership option gives you 100% of the choice over which vegetables you receive and when. There is no requirement to commit to picking up vegetables every week, though it is always an option. Place an order every week or every month - it’s up to you!

🌻 Flower share - This share includes 6 weeks of farm fresh mixed bouquets. Each week will highlight different seasonal blooms.

We have pickup options in Bridgewater (tbd), Liverpool (), Lapland (.farm) and Halifax (). Thank you to our pick-up partners for your support!

Finally, we know that fresh local produce isn’t always accessible, so we have established a solidarity share fund with support from our generous community. Anyone who is interested in a CSA but cannot, for any reason, afford a regularly priced share is welcome to access these funds, just let us know! And thank you to those that have contributed to our solidarity share fund!

Reach out with any questions. We look forward to growing for you! Join today - https://springtidefarm.localline.ca/2024-csa

We have three different share options available - something for everyone!

🥕 Market share - our most popular and most flexible option. Essentially, you purchase credit now and spend it throughout the season on your favourite veggies and flowers. You order what you like, when you like!

🍅 Basket share - a more traditional and convenient option. You’ll receive a farmer’s choice basket with 7-10 unique items every week for 20 weeks. All you have to do is pick it up!

💐 Flower share - there’s nothing like local blooms, so with this option you receive 6 weeks of beautiful bouquets. Great as a gift (to yourself, a friend, a loved one) or as an add-on to a basket share.

We have pick-up locations in North End Halifax, Bridgewater, Liverpool, and on the farm.

We look forward to growing for you this season. A resilient food system is centred around community, we couldn’t do it without you!

We were so grateful to have had .photo come by the farm last summer to capture some peak season shots!

We’ve been chugging along with our heads down the last few years building up our little farm, so it’s refreshing to look at it from a new perspective. Thank you, Meagan! And thanks to everyone who has supported us up until now. We’ve done an awful lot of growing in 3 years!

We’re still working through the growing pains, but we’re looking forward to 2024. Reflections from 2023 are shaping our plans - better bed prepping tools, clubroot resistant brassicas, improved seed starting set up, and more hands in the field.

We’re excited to share some good food and beautiful flowers with you this year, so stay tuned for the launch of our community supported agriculture program this Thursday! 🌱🌷

The turning of the seasons, and a fall without brassicas 09/04/2023

The turning of the seasons, and a fall without brassicas It's so nice to be writing a blog post without having to worry about a looming downpour in the forecast - September is rolling in with great weather, but Rebecca and I are heading into Autumn with some disappointment (and to be honest, stress) about the way our Fall crops are shaping up. In last wee...

Tomatoes: the silver lining 08/29/2023

Bleak blog post, but lots of tomatoes for sale!

Tomatoes: the silver lining This won't be the first time that I comment on the challenges of this season, but as we gear up for hurricane season and prepare for another 20-90mm (some projections say only 5-10mm, so let's hope for that) of rain over the next two days, it's becoming difficult to keep up with the work and stay po...

Hooray for dry days! 08/21/2023

Hooray for dry days! Hi everyone! I hope you've been staying dry over the past few weeks, and that the flowers Rebecca shared with you last week were a nice contrast to the grey days we've become so accustomed to this summer. As I type this the sky looks somewhat threatening once again. The rain has been nothing short o...

Tour the Flower Patch With Me! 08/14/2023

Enjoy this min tour of our flower patch! Plus some fun new ways to use zucchini and dill.

Tour the Flower Patch With Me! Jessie commented last week on some of the challenges that come around every year around this time. And certainly, the exhaustion is no joke; so despite it all it's important to remind ourselves why we love farming and to find the beauty in it. Alongside the August chaos comes the vibrancy of the flo...

Time for the midsummer slog 08/09/2023

Time for the midsummer slog This time of the season always feels like a bit of an uphill battle. Most of the fall seedlings are in the ground and lots of crops are coming into their peak harvest periods, yet it feels like the little tasks get away from us and the crops that aren't faring so hot stare us down. Because the farm....

Garlic, glamour and good news! 08/01/2023

Read about all of the excitement on the farm this week! Plus recipes for some fun summer crops like cherry tomatoes and shish*to peppers.

Garlic, glamour and good news! It's been a big week here at the farm - we hosted our first annual garlic harvest party, participated in the filming of a documentary, and received our organic certification! All of that on top of the usual hustle and bustle of late July. We're so grateful for the community that supports us and help...

We have great news! ☀️

As of yesterday, we’re pleased to announce that Spring Tide Farm is officially certified organic with Ecocert! 🥳🥳

We take a holistic approach to farming in line with the pillars of agroecology that extend beyond farm practices alone. Under the umbrella of agroecology, we believe that organic certification is an important standard for us to hold ourselves accountable to as it forces us to keep good records and check in with the inputs that come onto the farm and into the soil, water, and ecological systems we are embedded within.

Spring Tide Farm

Spring Tide Farm is a new farming endeavour started by sisters and first generation farmers Rebecca and Jessie MacInnis. With a combined 8 years of farming experience, we are excited to try our hand at running our own farm. We are passionate about agroecological farming practices that seek to find balance between the way we grow food and the environmental systems that support us.

Still a work in progress, we will be leasing land and infrastructure from Cammie Harbottle, owner of Waldegrave Farm. She has been a wonderful mentor and we are thrilled to continue working with her support. It’s a privilege to be able to work the land and feed our community. We will be growing mixed vegetables and flowers for sale to markets, wholesale, and through community supported agriculture (CSA) programs. Registration to become a member for the 2020 CSA program is open now! Spots are limited in both Halifax and Tatamagouche, so sign up today to reserve your spot. Follow along to see how our first season progresses!

We are grateful to live and work in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’maw people. We are all treaty people.
