How much do you know about the history of Thanksgiving in Canada? 🍁
The purpose and practice of celebrating Thanksgiving has changed over the years, but gratitude and giving back remains at the heart of this holiday. We discuss the past and present of Thanksgiving over on our blog — check it out here:
Thanksgiving Then, Thanksgiving Today | Food Banks Mississauga Learn more and celebrate the traditions of Thanksgiving past and present while showing your gratitude by giving back to the Thanksgiving Drive!
Yesterday, Meghan Nicholls, CEO of Food Banks Mississauga, presented to City of Mississauga - Municipal Government’s City Council about the state of the food bank usage crisis in our city. With 1 in 13 residents accessing food support through our 60+ agency members, Meghan urged councillors and folks who are able to join our Thanksgiving Drive and help raise much-needed funds to support our community in need.

Today, we want to thank The Hylcan Foundation! ❤️ Not only did we receive a $7,500 grant from them this past year, but they also have supported us every year since 2018. They’ve granted us a total of $45,000 – the equivalent of food for 45,000 meals! 🫑🥖🍓Thank you, Hylcan Foundation, for your continued support to provide healthy food to neighbours living with food insecurity!
Last year, the city of Mississauga saw the fastest increase in food bank usage in all of Ontario.
Food Banks Mississauga along with our network of 60+ agency members served 58% more people last year than the year before. Compared to the average increase of 22% from across the province.
This increase is a direct reflection of the state of food insecurity and the ongoing economic challenges in our city. We need policy changes that will improve social services, provide more housing, and allow people to get out of poverty. But in the meantime, we need your generosity to feed our neighbours TODAY. We rely almost entirely on donations to meet the increasing needs of folks in Mississauga and it’s through YOUR giving that we can ensure all our neighbours have access to the food they need.

Happy 1st Birthday to us, Food Banks Mississauga!! 🎂🎈
Although as an organization we’ve been around for almost 40 years, today we’re celebrating one whole year as Food Banks Mississauga. We launched our new name last year to better represent our position as the food banking network leader in Mississauga and to show how our work goes beyond just one organization.
One year as Food Banks Mississauga also means one more year of your generous support for our neighbours experiencing food insecurity. With 8% of our city using food banks in our network, your support is more crucial than ever. Thank you.
This morning, Feed Ontario joined by Food Banks Canada and other food banks across Ontario, held a press conference at our warehouse to call attention to new record-breaking numbers on food bank usage across Ontario.
With over 1 million people in Ontario visiting a food bank, Carolyn Stewart (CEO of Feed Ontario) asked: “When did we start accepting that people going hungry is OK? That it's OK for some to thrive while we leave others drowning? Housing costs are too high, incomes aren't keeping up, social supports aren't keeping up with those who rely on them. People are drowning in the rising tide of unaffordability.”
This , we encourage you to reach out to your elected officials to advocate for change in our city and across our province: foodbanksmississauga.ca/advocacy
Today is the first day of our Thanksgiving Drive! 🍂🍁

After retiring from his career as a banking professional, Pradeep decided to commit his free time to a different form of banking - food banking! He started volunteering as a food sorter last year and has since taken on more responsibilities as a food sorting volunteer leader.
Pradeep thinks more people should join him as a volunteer because Food Banks Mississauga provides a “great atmosphere” with the “ability to see and feel the impact of [your] contribution.” He says that volunteering is a “win-win for everyone, including self-development through teamwork and collaboration!”
We agree - you SHOULD volunteer with us! In fact, we’re currently in need of more food sorting volunteer leaders to train and supervise other volunteers! Read more about Pradeep and his volunteer role here: https://www.foodbanksmississauga.ca/spotlight/volunteer-spotlight-pradeep/
Curious what it would be like to be a Food Bank 2 Home Volunteer Driver? Wonder no more!
We recently joined Doug, one of our dedicated volunteer drivers, as he delivered groceries to neighbours in our Food Bank 2 Home food delivery program. This program is for folks who need food support but, due to mobility issues, are unable to get to their neighbourhood food bank. Watch this video to learn what drives Doug’s commitment to help his Mississauga neighbours in need. 🚗 🥕🥫

This vital funding will strengthen our programs, helping us address food insecurity and support our neighbours in need. Together, we’re making a difference in the lives of those facing hunger in our community.
Food Banks Mississauga will be closed tomorrow, Friday, August 30th, for a company-wide Wellness Day, and again on Monday, September 2nd for Labour Day.

We’ve been so fortunate to have Ahmed, Brianna, Jill, and Parneet on our team for the last few months and are grateful for all the work they’ve done collecting client surveys, interviewing food bank visitors, and writing content to share with you all. “Whatever little thing you gave, it goes a long way. I have to compose myself a bit—thank you. They say it takes a village to raise a child, and it does. ” says Andreia*, a mother who relies on Food Banks Mississauga to help provide her children with nutritious meals and snacks.
Thanks to support from Food Banks Canada and the program, we're able to distribute healthy snack packs, including fresh fruit, to help families like Andreia’s ensure their children have access to nutritious food during the summer. 🍎🍊🧃

Many of the people who access food support through Food Banks Mississauga and our agency network are parents or caregivers. The support they receive is critical in helping them put food on the table for their children.
Over the past few months, we’ve heard stories from:
🟢 Grandparents like Fiona*, who cares for her three grandchildren while relying on a pension. She has been turning to her neighbourhood food bank over the past year and is deeply grateful for the support that helps feed her family.
🔵 Single mothers like Samira*, who relies solely on public transportation and appreciates the nearby food bank that helps her provide food for her daughter while saving for her future education.
🟣 Fathers like Lucas*, a dad of four who lost his job and is thankful for the fresh food he receives from his local food bank as he continues searching for a new job.
Your support of our End Summer Hunger campaign helps folks like Fiona, Samira, and Lucas continue to provide their loved ones with nutritious food.

🍎🥬 Today’s the first Community Market Pop-Up Food Bank of the year! 🥕🫐
We’re excited to be joined by our generous partners, Habib Canadian Bank, and their amazing volunteers as well as GlobalMedic who are back again this year to provide lentils and rice for neighbours in need.
We’ll be hosting this market every second Thursday from now until October 3rd, providing fresh fruits and veggies to folks in the Malton community that are experiencing food insecurity.
Learn more about this program on our website: https://www.foodbanksmississauga.ca/get-support/pop-up-food-bank/
Our Culturally-Responsive Food Program, made possible by Food Banks Canada, is making a meaningful impact in our community, providing food that resonates with the diverse cultural backgrounds of those we serve.
Here's what one of our agency network members shared with us:
“The project is actually touching the right spot because people are linked to their culture. We're trying to become one people here in terms of, you know, the Canadian society, our way of embracing things. But people still have the culture. That means they have the food, they have the way of acting, they have the language, they have different things that cater to who they are. So this project is very, very important”
- Pastor Daniel, Executive Director of Global Family Community Centre
Thank you so very much (or should we say, tack så jättemycket! 💛🇸🇪) to the incredible team from IKEA who recently joined us for a food sorting shift! 🙌

When we moved into our warehouse in April 2023, we were grateful to have the larger space but quickly realized it was HOT in there. 🥵🌡️ With our warehouse operations team and FB2H and food sorting volunteers working hard each day, we knew we had to cool things down a bit. We reached out to Food Banks Canada to request a grant for fans, and this summer – they delivered! 🙌 We now have 4 massive 16ft ceiling fans installed to keep our staff and volunteers cool and energized as they work hard to process and sort food for our neighbours in need.
How much were these fans needed and appreciated? Watch the video to find out! 😏
