The Gap in Life Expectancy Between Genders Is Getting Bigger. So, What’s Killing Men?
At every age between birth and 75, British boys and men have a greater chance of dying than women – and life expectancies are dropping faster, too. Why are we more at risk? And how can we all avoid an early checkout?
Something’s not right. In 2003, Adam Alderson, a 24-year-old tree surgeon based in the small North Yorkshire village of Preston-under-Scar, noticed a dull discomfort in his bowels. ‘It wasn’t really painful at first, but there was a problem there,’ he says. ‘It would come in bouts, so I’d be alright most of the time. Then it started happening more frequently,’ he says. After weeks of brushing it off as a mild inconvenience, Adam went to see his GP, who told him that he probably had irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). He was prescribed a fibre supplement and sent on his way. The discomfort persisted, but what could he do? One in three Brits experience IBS symptoms – hardly an extraordinary complaint – and Adam wasn’t one to make a fuss. He was fit, young and active. There werebigger things to worry about than an occasional bout of diarrhoea.
By the time he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer called pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) 10 years later, Adam knew that he urgently needed help. ‘As men, we’re conditioned not to really talk about our health too much, especially if it’s something that’s worrying us,’ he says. ‘We tend to bury our heads in the sand and hope that our illnesses will just go away. We’ll search for every other thing possible for them to be, other than what they actually could be.’

We are pleased to announce our inaugrial "Men Leaving Violence Safety Planning Toolkit"
Our current knowledge of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) and domestic abuse in men is thin. We hope that this toolkit will serve both as a helpful resource for men navigating abusive relationships and also provides valuable information for service providers encountering men who experience these challenges.
This toolkit illustrates how the experiences of IPV in men can be both similar and different from those of women. It adds some clarity to what IPV and domestic abuse are and highlights how it may present in various populations of men. The guide offers a section on practical safety planning and concludes with helpful resources that individuals can connect with for additional support.

Boys vs Girls
There’s an emerging gender divide everywhere but in Japan. Why?
This post, postulates that Japan diverges from other countries in that there does not seem to be a growing difference in liberal vs. conservative attitudes by gender in Japan. Have you noticed a change in political ideology between women and men that you know?
https://www.themenscentre.ca/r/fmD
Financial Times published an article about a new global gender divide emerging in advanced nations around the globe. Using data from surveys in South Korea, the US, Germany, and the UK, it argued that the political ideology of young (18-29) men and women was sharply diverging. Young women are increasingly identifying as liberal, while young men are increasingly identifying as conservative. The chart makes the gap clear:

We arguably live in a patriarchal and hierarchical society. As a result, some people think that men cannot be victims. After all a society which operates this way should be favourable to men. But this is often not the case.

What Do Men Want?
The evidence is in. American men are facing a crisis — in health, in education and in the labour force. But under all of that runs deeper trends — isconnection, loneliness and a lack of role models. Columnists Theodore Johnson and Shadi Hamid talk with Richard Reeves, founder of the American Institute for Boys and Men, about the duelling
visions of masculinity on the political stage and a hopeful way forward for the modern man.
This short Washington Post podcast looks at the issue from a unique perspective. I especially like the part about role models for boys.

HOW WOULD YOU COPE?
Men deal with injury, loss and recovery in different ways. We would like to hear your stories as well as what you think of this man’s path.
"Under the Surface" is a documentary film that explores acceptance after injury, men’s mental health, and what it means to be vulnerable as a man in the outdoor endurance swimming world.
We go back to the time before Jim found swimming, where he broke his back in a work-related accident. We are taken through Jim’s experiences with addiction to pain medication, the loss of his long-term relationship, and through the reality of recovering from an injury.
Jim finds solace and rehabilitation in endurance swimming, learning to walk again through his swimming, and starting to build a new career as a swim coach in the process.
