What is the greatest unexpected challenge of designing a remotely operated vehicle ( )?
According to SEAMOR Marine Mechanical Product Designer and guest competition judge John Omeljaniuk, the answer to this question is surprising given the frigid temperature of Canada’s oceans: management!
“I personally had trouble with this issue when building ROVs back in university,” Omeljaniuk says. “When you put electronics in a water-tight housing you've effectively created an oven – a heat source with excellent thermal insulation. You need to plan to dissipate that heat elsewhere or risk damaging your electronics. In fact, internal temperatures can even cause issues with mechanical components which is why we don't use certain materials inside the can.”
As the competition heats up on the final day of 2024 MATE ROV Competition hosted by the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University, we wish all student teams success as they tackle the last round of challenges!
So you want to build a remotely operated vehicle (ROV)?
Today kicks off the 2024 MATE ROV Competition in beautifully rugged St. John’s, Newfoundland. Hosted by the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University, student engineering teams have designed their very own ROVs and will compete in the SCOUT and RANGER categories of this international competition.
Our very own John Omeljaniuk, SEAMOR Marine Mechanical Product Designer, is en route to assist in the event as a competition judge. In reflecting on his own experience designing and calibrating , he mentioned a particular challenge that may not at first be obvious.
“Vehicle balance can be really tricky to manage. Most operate slightly on either side of neutrally buoyant (slightly sink or slightly float). Getting to this state can require some fiddling,” Omeljaniuk says. “Additionally, underwater is an interesting environment to operate in because its (almost) true 3D space – an needs to be able to control its orientation as well as its motion. This is commonly done with strategic floats and weights to maintain a specific natural orientation, though controlled orientation is also possible.”
We look forward to hearing how the student engineering teams tackled this core design challenge. Join us in wishing good luck to all the teams taking part in the competition today!

SEAMOR Marine’s very own John Omeljaniuk, Mechanical Product Designer, will be attending the 2024 ROV Competition hosted by the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland on May 2-4, 2024.
Student teams have been hard at work designing remotely operated vehicles ( ) to take part in this year’s competition in both the Scout and Ranger classes. This year’s focus is on for designing ocean observation assets for collection, reimagining the utility of cables, administering probiotics for diseased , identifying healthy habitats for lake , and deploying global ocean biogeochemistry array (GO-BGC) floats to monitor health. John will act as a competition judge and represent the SEAMOR Marine engineering team, proud to be one of the leading and most highly recognized Canadian manufacturers in the industry.
Join us wishing John a safe journey from on Canada’s Coast to , Canada’s easternmost island – and good luck to all the teams participating in this year’s MATE ROV Competition!
