Today, as many celebrate Canada Day, we take a moment to reflect on the colonial history and ongoing injustices faced by Indigenous Peoples in Canada.
For many, this day is a reminder of the deep impacts of colonization and systemic discrimination that continue to occur. Let's use this time to educate ourselves, honour Indigenous histories, and advocate for meaningful reconciliation.
Together, we can work towards a future rooted in respect, understanding, and justice for all. 🧡

Yesterday, we had the incredible opportunity to participate in the Anti-Sex Trafficking Information Session at Bishop Reding Catholic Secondary School. This impactful event, organized in collaboration with Halton Catholic District School Board and EFRY Hope and Help for Women, we were honoured to inform and educate the community about the realities of human trafficking!
Our dedicated SAVIS team members, including Silvia, Elizabeth, Vikki, and Nancy, attended to provide support and answer questions from community members. Julia and Tricia also delivered powerful presentations on Anti-Human Trafficking, while Kyle did an excellent job moderating the panel and serving as the MC. We were also joined by Journey, the Halton Regional Police Services' Victim Quick Response Program support pup, who brought comfort and support!
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to making this event a success! Together, we can raise awareness and drive change!
Join us on Thursday, June 13, alongside HCDSB and EFRY, for an Anti-Sex Trafficking Information Session!
This session is open to all members of the Halton community and will be held from 6:30pm - 8:30p.m. at Bishop Reding Catholic Secondary School (1120 Main St. E, Milton).
This second session is being held in response to an overwhelming interest in the Anti-Sex Trafficking Information Session that was held in February. The event will uncover the realities of s*x trafficking and provide insight into who is at risk, digital and cyber security considerations, warning signs and how to keep our children and youth safe.

Yesterday, Silvia and Julia attended the petition to amend Section 278 of the Criminal Code of Canada (CCC), which was tabled in the House of Commons. One of SAVIS' board members, Alexa Barkley, and a colleague of hers, Tanya Couch, have been doing amazing advocacy work towards this petition.
As discussed in our previous post, Section 278 CCC currently allows a person who has been charged with s*xual violence to apply for access to a survivor's private and confidential records.
Section 278 CCC does not align with supporting survivors or fostering a safe society for everyone. It continues to restrict the support available to survivors coping with the trauma of s*xual violence.
Survivors should feel safe when seeking support! We support survivors, and as a society, we all need to support survivors 💜
