On April 30, 2023, an impaired driver changed my life.

My whole world sat inside of my vehicle as I drove my 13 year old son, 12 year old daughter, and husband home from my daughterā€™s dance competition. We were travelling in the right hand lane of Highway 16, going 110 km/h, 15 minutes away from home. Without warning, an SUV attempted to cross the highway. There was nothing that I could do to prevent what was happening, so I slammed on the brakes, swerved to the right, and did everything that I could possibly do to spare my familyā€™s and my lives. All of the vehicleā€™s airbags deployed as the other driverā€™s SUV smashed into the driverā€™s side of mine.
I was knocked unconscious and everything went black.
When I regained consciousness and my hearing and vision somewhat returned, I called out to each one of my family members, hoping they were alive. Thankfully, they each answered. We climbed over our seats and exited through the doors that would open as quickly as we could.
The SUV that hit us was on its roof and turned 180 degrees in the
opposite direction. My vehicle was destroyed and smouldering in the ditch.
Four people waited with us on the side of the highway until the first
responders arrived. A first, then a second Peace Officer, and then
County Firefighters came. Once we were taken care of, the Peace
Officers went to the other vehicle. As they pulled the driver out of his SUV, I thought that his legs had been broken in the crash. But then I realised something else - the driverā€™s hands were behind his back. He was handcuffed. His legs werenā€™t broken, and I hadnā€™t even considered it.

ā€œIs he drunk?!ā€ I asked the firefighters. After a few seconds, one
responded. ā€œYesā€.

The person who had driven into us was impaired.

Since the crash I deal with physical and mental pain daily. I am one of 4 people in my vehicle who were injured and had their worlds changed that day too. All because one person made the choice to drive impaired.

Impaired driving is a choice that is 100% preventable. Impaired drivers cause the injuries and deaths of innocent people. They make choices that put every single person who comes into contact with them and their vehicle at risk.
