🏥 This week, we are seeing a lot of eczema flare-ups with the heat wave!🥵Extreme temperatures can make your child’s eczema worse.

💊This little one came to see me after having repeated flare-ups that weren’t going away with many different lotions and soaps. With properly prescribed treatment and education on how to manage the eczema, her flare-up resolved within 48 hours.🙌🏼

💡It’s best to avoid swimming pools for 2 weeks and beach water for 6 weeks to ensure that your piercings stay healthy and beautiful.👌🏼🤩

😳This client came to see me after getting 2nd and 3rd piercings from another establishment…the earrings were literally hanging off the edge of the upper lobe. Swipe to see where they were originally.👉🏼

👌🏼We came up with a plan to remove the earrings, let the piercings heal over and then repierce…now they look beautifully placed!🤩

🙌🏼This little one’s eczema flare-up was treated with the right topical prescription. The after photo was taken 48 hours post-treatment.👌🏼

💡Paler patches of skin (hypo-pigmentation) are seen when an eczema flare is resolving.

💡Many patients worry that the hypo-pigmentation is caused by side-effects of a topical treatment – particularly, topical steroids. It is true that topical steroids can cause the tiny blood vessels to dilate. But this is temporary and not skin damage. The hypo-pigmentation itself is caused by the eczema, not the treatment - and it eventually resolves.🙌🏼

🙌🏼It is possible to clear a full face of eczema and a child miserable with the itch in one week! This week, I was happy to treat this little one who was much more comfortable (and happier) after 48 hours with properly prescribed treatment.🙏🏼

👉🏼Many of you have contacted me and I understand that the wait-times to see a dermatologist can be months. As a pediatric nurse practitioner with a focus in dermatology, this year I am offering eczema consultations to clients outside of my practice.

👉🏼You do not need a referral. I provide a comprehensive approach to your child’s care that includes prescriptions (if needed) with advice on skincare, diet, triggers and how to prevent those flare-ups. This is not covered by OHIP but may be covered by your benefit plan.

💕Let’s talk piercings, travel and cultural customs.✈️🌏

(Before we delve into this subject, this excited little one didn’t make a peep for her titanium piercings and enjoyed some chocolate afterwards).🎉

✈️She will be visiting family this week in India, so we provided some extra education on how to care for new piercings when travelling abroad. Always bring extra earrings in case you lose one or two. More importantly, knowing how to deal with an infection while travelling is key! We can hook you up with this!🗺️

💡Did you know that in the Indian culture, it’s very common to pierce high on the earlobe? The reason is to ensure that heavy jewellery can be worn for weddings and other special occasions. This cultural tradition is still revered by many. Often times grandmas and great-grandmas attend the appointment to ensure the piercing is precisely where it should be for this reason. 🎂Birthday Piercings...let's break down the good, the bad and the ugly (yes, there is an ugly).

🎉Often times, we LOVE birthday piercings because everyone wants it. However, when thinking of a birthday piercing for your child, PLEASE consider the following:

😳Surprises...are never good for some people. You know your child best. Be sure to plan ahead and sometimes this means preparing your child for what will occur at the appointment. This type of preparation can take WEEKS and should be done BEFORE the appointment and NOT at the appointment. Like anything else, if you have an inkling that this isn't going to go well, follow your gut and wait until they are ready.

😥The anxiety...period. This can be stressful for older children who have legitimate fears of needles and being poked. We never want to have upset tears on a birthday.

💕The memory...we want it to be a good one! No one wants to remember a birthday where they were stressed, crying and feeling coerced into something. This is definitely not a good look and I will intervene and end the appointment.

🤔Just a few thoughts to consider if this may be your birthday plan for your child!
