Our mission: to support UNBC students both in the history program and those simply interested in history through a wide variety of events and opportunities

URGENT: UNBC will be ending in person instruction on Wednesday, March 19 or earlier in response to the COVID 19 survival pandemic. Alternative learning arrangements will be made in the coming days.
Please follow official UNBC news feeds for more information.
Coronavirus (COVID-19) update for March 14: The last day of face-to-face classes will be Wednesday March 18 as we are asking faculty and staff to actively transition classes to alternate delivery models. This self-imposed date may move earlier but it will not move later.
The semester will be completed, including assessments and exams, using alternative service delivery models.
UNBC's campus remains open. We will continue to follow guidance provided by Northern Health, the Provincial Health Officer (PHO), and the Ministry of Advanced Education, Skills and Training. Services such as the library, food services, Northern Sport Centre, and student housing will remain open. Some service levels may need to be changed, or have already changed (such as food services) in order to support public health.

ANNOUNCEMENT:
Dear friends,
It is with reluctance that the Northern Historical Student Society must announce that we are postponing the third Northern Historical Conference until October 23-24, 2020. While we had hoped to run the conference on February 28-29 of this year, recent events at UNBC have caused us to miss some deadlines and opportunities for communications and outreach, and as such we realized that our pre-determined dates will not be best for the success of this conference.
However, we see this delay as an opportunity to make the Northern Historical Conference even better! If you already purchased your tickets, not to worry: the dates will be changed, and you do not need to repurchase them. If you already submitted an abstract, there will be no need to resubmit! If you are working on a paper this semester that you would like to present next year, our submissions will remain open until October 2, 2020! If you have purchased your ticket and cannot make it in October, we will be offering full refunds.
We look forward to seeing you in October!
Sincerely,
The Northern Historical Student Society Executive Team
Seeing as everyone is settled back into class after the strike, the madness of December, and Christmas break, let's get back to introducing ourselves!
Meet your Executive Team - Aaron Larsen, President
Hi everyone, my name is Aaron Larsen and I am in the first year of my Masters’ degree in the UNBC History Department, studying the links between geography and witch trials in Zug, Switzerland. I have been going to UNBC for eight years now, starting with my Bachelor of Arts, followed by a Bachelor of Education, and I just keep coming back for more. This is also my fifth year of being an executive of the NHSS, after previously being our Media Coordinator for three years, and an Advisor for one year. I’m also one of the co-founders of the Northern Historical Conference, one of my proudest achievements at UNBC!
I’m so excited to be back on the NHSS Exec team, so I can add one more thing to my already non-existent work/life balance. Yay! When I’m not having an existential crisis or working on my graduate studies, you can find me teaching History 191 tutorials, teaching at Nusdeh Yoh Elementary, or travelling and getting into trouble in another far away corner of the world. My dream is to one day publish at least one book before I travel the old Silk Road trade route and preferably not die. Come say hi next time you see me!
Come on down to the Thirsty Moose Pub tonight!
We’re selling tickets for our pub night this Friday! Come chat with us and bring 10$ for your ticket! Each ticket gets you a free drink!
Come check out our table in the Winter Garden outside of Tim’s! We’ll be here until Thursday!

Meet your Executive Team - Nolan Foster, NHSS Vice President
Hello new, old, and potential friends! My name is Nolan Foster, and after a quick ten year hiatus from post secondary, I am back at school. I am currently a third year History major, and intend to apply for law school after completing my undergraduate degree. In saying that, who knows what the future holds… I’ve already changed my mind twice about what I want to be when I grow up since I started writing this bio.
Even though I barely have it anymore, in my spare time I usually enjoy plucking away at a guitar, playing in the snow, or reading. Being new to the NHSS, I am excited at the prospect of helping share History with the community. If you ever have questions or just feel like chatting, feel free to stop me in the halls and chat.
Meet your Executive Team - Nevada Hinton, NHSS Media Coordinator:
Hey guys! My name is Nevada Hinton and I am a History major with a Political Science minor at UNBC. I am currently in my second year here. Before starting university, I worked as an apprentice electrician before changing my mind and deciding I want to be a teacher. I plan to go into the Bachelor of Education program after I complete my degree to teach High School Social Studies and Law.
Some of my hobbies include rodeo, quadding, and pretty much anything outdoors! I love my horses and like to spend my summers riding and adventuring. I’m really excited for what the NHSS has planned for this year! Be on the look out for our upcoming events and feel free to say hi if you see me around.
Meet your Executive Team - Cyan LeMoal, NHSS Member at Large:
Howdy! My name is Cyan and I am a second year Geography major with a History minor. After I complete my degree, I plan to go into the Bachelor of Education program. I hope to one day become an elementary school teacher, teaching between Grades 1 and 4.
I moved to Prince George in September from the Kootenays and although I have since seen lots of foxes, I am still patiently waiting to see a moose. I am very excited to be apart of the NHSS as it is nice to connect with like-minded people - nerds. When I’m not crying over citations, you can find me waitressing at Boston Pizza or aimlessly driving the backroads of Prince George hoping to catch a glimpse of a moose.
So on that note, if you know of any good moose sighting spots, please let me know!
Meet your Executive Team - Elizabeth Laird, NHSS Secretary:
Hello Hello! I’m Elizabeth, a third year History Major and Political Science Minor who dreams of one day become a History professor with a focus on the political activism of minority groups. I have spent a little under a year researching the League of Indians of Canada and am looking forward to doing an independent study on the subject next semester.
This is my first semester at UNBC, having moved to PG from the Okanagan over the summer, and so far, I have spent everyday bracing myself for the cold that everyone tells me won’t be that bad, but I don’t really believe them. I’m thrilled to be a part of the NHSS this year, it’s pretty great not being the biggest nerd in the room for a change, plus the executive has a pretty cool camaraderie thing going on.
If you need me and I’m on campus then your best bet is checking the library/archives, the bookstore, or one of the coffee lines because I refuse to let my caffeine addiction fade now that I really need it. Otherwise I work at a downtown daycare, and gaze wistfully at Books & Co. every time I walk by while telling myself plane tickets aren’t cheap and there’s still a world out there to see. If you see me out and about feel free to wave me down!
