The University of Saskatchewan 2024 Images of Research contest just wrapped up and my photo of the polar bears received runner up in the 'from the field' category.

Seeing moms with triplets used to be fairly common along the Hudson Bay coast in Wapusk National Park at about 10% of the population but is pretty rare now. Thanks climate change.

Do you feel 'cool' from just seeing the snow?? This red fox was caught posing for the camera one early spring morning 🦊

Did you know that red foxes are excellent athletes? They can run up to 50 km/h and can jump over fences that are 6 feet high! Their athletic ability and clever behavior make them well suited for survival in urban settings.

Can you tell the difference between a snowshoe hare and a white-tailed jackrabbit? 🐇

Although they are very similar, snowshoe hares can be distinguished from the white-tailed jackrabbit by their smaller size, smaller ears, and larger, furry feet which help them move over the snow throughout the winter. Snowshoe hares are mostly found in mixed woodland and swampy areas.

The snowshoe hare in this photo is just starting to change into its summer coat!

The heat has resulted in not a lot of animals showing up on our trail cameras in Saskatoon, but a few notables:

A deer at 35C.

Some geese feeding in 37C.

A rabbit at 40C for the win.

Quite a few cats out as well..

Doing urban wildlife research is always interesting. We just found a BLACK BEAR inside the city limits of Saskatoon on the west side near the junction of #7 and #14 on ag lands.

Keep your eyes open people and report any potentially dangerous big mammals like bears, moose, and wild pigs!

For large animal concerns, call Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment at 306-933-6240; Emergencies, 9-11

Has a coyote ever “followed” you or your dog while you’re walking in your neighborhood or in the park? If so, you may have felt afraid, perhaps thought the coyote was stalking you, or that an attack was imminent. But don’t fear. Coyotes are naturally curious animals, and often engage in this behavior called “escorting”. Escorting is when a coyote, sometimes with its mate, makes sure that you are leaving its territory. This behavior is most often seen from early March to late April, when coyote parents are protecting their precious puppies. Escorting most often happens in early morning or in the evening, and because they may see dogs as a threat to their babies, it’s most often seen by dog walkers.

*
*

What do you do if you’re “escorted” by a coyote? Don’t panic; the coyote is much more terrified of you! If you don’t have your dog leashed - which you should in coyote country- immediately leash it and keep it by your side. Calmly keep walking, slowly, as normally. Soon enough, you’ll be out of the coyote’s home and he will stop escorting you! On the off chance the escorting coyote starts to approach too closely, shout and wave your hands to frighten it away. As we humans develop more and more woodlands, coyote coexistence has become even more essential; we simply must learn to speak their language.

Checking one of our camera sites (to tidy up any grass blowing in the wind that sets the cameras off) at the eastern edge of the city today and we saw a moose family--a mature female and two calves from last spring! There were tracks everywhere and a big clump of fur on the tree right beside the camera so hope to see some moose up close and personal on the trail camera photos!

Some recent cool new photos of wildlife in Saskatoon!

Photos from YXEwildlife's post 02/24/2021

We are excited to see our YXEWildlife project underway. We started in September of 2020 by deploying 30 Browning trail cameras in the city of Saskatoon and we have been monitoring them regularly ever since. So many thousands of wildlife photos pouring in and we'll have lots of updates to share as we turn the photos into data. We will also be posting photos to show you what we are seeing and getting a look at what is happening when we are all sleeping at night. Any questions? Post them here or email us at [email protected]
