Congratulations Shiva Farrahi on being awarded the Student Certificate of Merit from the Pierre Fauchard Academy and the ADEA Dr. Jeanne Craig Sinkford Student Leadership Award.

The Pierre Fauchard Academy Senior Student Undergraduate Award of Recognition is
awarded to an outstanding individual from the current graduating class who excels in the academic and clinical aspects of the program, exhibited leadership and through accomplishments has demonstrated dedication to the advancement of dental literature.

The ADEA Dr. Jeanne Craig Sinkford Student Leadership Award is given to a graduating dental student for outstanding advocacy for diversity, equity and inclusion; engagement in community service; and championship for access to oral health care and health equity for underserved and disadvantaged populations. This award is intended to inspire and empower the next generation of leaders in dental education and organized dentistry.

Welcome summer research students!
This cohort includes both USask DMD students and international visiting research students from the Mitacs Globalink Research Internship program. Students will spend the next 12 weeks gaining research experience as they complete innovative research projects and take part in weekly research seminars.

Congratulations Joanna Tran, recipient of the 2023 Dr. Kirk Johnston Spirit of Dentistry Memorial Scholarship.

This scholarship was created to honor the memory and spirit of Dr. Kirk Johnston, a much-loved graduate of the College of Dentistry. The purpose of this scholarship exemplifies the qualities for which Dr. Johnston is remembered and which made him an extraordinary dentist, friend and mentor.

It is awarded to a student who has completed Year 3 and who exhibits enthusiasm, healthy and positive attitude, creativity, leadership, humanitarianism, a motivator to inspire others to strive for excellence, genuine compassion for the dental patient, and a sense of humor.

This week marks an exciting milestone for the Dental Assisting students as they begin their one-week external practicum. This opportunity represents a crucial step in their training, allowing them to apply their classroom and clinic knowledge in a real-world dental setting.

A group of Dental Therapists were recently in Saskatoon for the Saskatchewan Dental Therapist Associations 50th Annual Dental Therapy Conference. As part of the conference, they visited the USask College of Dentistry for a tour of the college and took the opportunity to experience the new cutting-edge augmented reality simulators in the Mixed Reality Patient Learning Space.

We sat down with three of the visiting dental therapists, Andrea Doiron, Floyd Prosper and Myra Daigneault to talk about the importance of dental therapists in Canada.

Dental Therapists from across the country are in Saskatoon for the 50th annual Dental Therapy Conference. Today the College of Dentistry welcomed a number of them as guests to tour the college. A part of the tour was a stop at our Mixed Reality Patient Simulation Learning Space where they got to try out this cutting-edge teaching technology. Saskatchewan Dental Therapists Association

Dental therapists serve as fundamental providers of oral health care, equipped with the skills to conduct essential clinical dental procedures and preventive measures across diverse environments.

Collaborating within a team of health care experts, they deliver treatments to restore dental health, implement strategies to prevent dental diseases, and promote oral health initiatives that contribute to overall well-being. They also champion patient needs, facilitate their journey to obtain health services, and coordinate with additional health care specialists for treatments that fall outside their professional domain.

Employed in a range of settings, dental therapists practice within public health sectors, government bodies, regional health departments, clinics in First Nations communities, educational institutions, and private practices.

The College of Dentistry is proud to be training the next generation of Dental Therapists at our four campus clinic locations in La Ronge, Prince Albert, Regina and at the main USask campus in Saskatoon.

at USask College of Dentistry was a guest speaker at the Saskatoon & District Dental Society. Her presentation was titled:
"Importance of research in the development of new materials"

A big thank you to the Muslim students in the College of Dentistry for providing an Eid Lunch for all faculty, staff and students.

Following the month of Ramadan, Muslims around the world rejoice by celebrating and congratulating each other on the days they have spent fasting, as well as the good deeds they have taken part in.

The ending of Ramadan, also the first day of the month of Shawal, is known as Eid Al-Fitr (the celebration of breaking fast).

Once again, our Muslim colleagues at the College of Dentistry shared the celebration of this holy day with the college with an amazing lunch! Thank you!

The College of Dentistry was well represented at last week’s International Association of Dental Research (IADR) conference in New Orleans.

Two of our PhD students, Dr. Andrea Escalante and Dr. Luana Dias, were honored with prestigious awards.

Andrea earned the 2024 IADR Lion Dental Research Award for her study, "Unveiling Proteomic Insights: Histatin 5 Degradation by Oral Bacteria," and Luana was awarded the highly competitive 2024 IADR Colgate Research in Prevention Award for her pioneering research, "Histatins' Influence on Candida albicans and Streptococcus mutans Dual-Species Biofilm."

Both Andrea and Luana presented their studies at the conference.

Also, congratulations to DMD students Bahar Vatanparast, Luke Wandzura and PhD student Paras Ahmad for being awarded the CADR-NCOHR Student Research Awards. This prestigious national award recognizes excellence in oral craniofacial and dental research.

Bahar, Luke and Feras Balbous also presented their research findings in New Orleans.

Happy International Woman's Day!

At today's monthly Research Seminar Series, we were pleased to welcome Dr. Deborah Anderson as an invited speaker.

Dr. Anderson is the Director of Research and Senior Research Scientist at the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency, as well as Cancer Cluster Leader, Professor of the Division of Oncology, and Associate Member of the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Saskatchewan.
