What is the quick?
The quick is a blood filled vessel and nerve endings that provides nourishnent to the nail to help it grow. That is what you want to avoid cutting when trimming nails to prevent bleeding or pain.
But did you know? If nails are left to grow too long then that quick also grows longer with the nail, meaning the nails can't be cut to the ideal length without nicking it.
But good news! There is a way to fix it.
Frequent nail trims, even if you can only shave a little bit off the nail, will eventually cause that quick to recede, meaning eventually those nails can be cut to the ideal length.
Nails are considered too long if they touch the floor when your dog is walking or if you can hear that 'click clack' sound.
Shoot me a message if you think it's time for your pets next trim!
Do you have an anxious pet who hates having their nails clipped?
Here's a few tips you can try to help them get over their fear and gain confidence.
- Touch their feet often, especially as puppies/kittens to help them get used to being handled.
-Reward them with high value treats/praise/playtime everytime they don't react to being handled
-Go slow and be patient. Every animal has a different tolerance level. Sometimes you might only be able to handle their paws for a moment and that's ok! Reward anyway and try a little more each day until they finally feel comfortable.
We want our pets to associate the nail trim experience with good outcomes like treats or play, so that they don't become more fearful with each visit. That is why I always make sure to bring high value treats when I trim nails and will go as slow as I need to until your pet is more comfortable.
Send me a message if you would like to book an appointment or if you have any questions! 😊
Merry Chistmas from Click Clack Claws!
Hoping everyone has a safe and wonderful holiday 🎄🎅
Did you know?
It is reccomended to trim your dogs nails every 3-4 weeks, and cats nails every 2-3 weeks. It's important that their nails don't become too long as it can cause pain when walking, and in extreme cases, even cause long term effects like arthritis in their joints.
However having an active pet or things like scratching posts can reduce the frequency of their nail trims as they wear them down naturally!
Happy Friday!
I still have some availability for nail trims this weekend! PM me if your furry friend needs a pawdicure ❤️
