The Bank of Canada has left its benchmark rate unchanged at 5.00%


As expected, the Bank of Canada has left its overnight target rate unchanged at 5.00% today.

In its statement, the Bank said it is “still concerned” about the risks to the outlook for inflation and that it “wants to see further and sustained easing in core inflation and continues to focus on the balance between demand and supply in the economy, inflation expectations, wage growth, and corporate pricing behaviour.”

This is the Bank’s fifth consecutive rate hold, though expectations are rising that rate cuts will be forthcoming by the middle or second half of the year.

The next rate announcement is scheduled for Wednesday, April 10, 2024
