Today might be the first day of August, but it is also ! It marks the date we've used up all the resources Earth can regenerate in a year. Now, we're borrowing from the future. This year so far, our community of Waste Warriors has helped to keep 627,329 pounds of beauty waste out of landfills!

What is Earth Overshoot Day? It is the day of the year on which humanity’s demand on nature exceeds the Earth’s annual biological capacity to regenerate. In 2024, Earth Overshoot Day falls on August 1st, meaning that between January 1st and August 1st, humanity’s demand for biological regeneration is equivalent to the planet’s entire annual regeneration.

But it doesn't have to be this way! Together, with our community of Waste Warriors, we can help by continuing to give beauty waste a new life.

From beauty waste to art! ♻ The Green Circle Salons team had the pleasure of joining Davines at their Craft event in Santa Fe, New Mexico, last week. We had the opportunity to chat and learn from local salon leaders about how salon sustainability is important to them when making business decisions and how they see themselves working within the beauty industry.

One of the stars of the show was an art installation comprised of beauty waste suspended from the air in a net. All of this beauty waste was collected over a 4-week period from local Santa Fe Waste Warrior Salon Del Mar. The goal was to drive attention to one of the biggest elephants in the room: What happens to the waste left behind after a salon service?

Is it left to be suspended in time in a landfill, or can it be given a new life? That's where we come in. Together with salons across Canada and the United States, we take that waste (from hair clippings to foils to excess hair color) and give it a second life. 877 pounds of beauty waste heads to the landfill every minute, and that doesn't have to be our story. Let's make beauty beautiful!
