To celebrate his 65th birthday, Rory MacKinnon undertook a 2,500km bike ride in
the UK – travelling from Land’s End to John O’Groats. But this bucket list trip, or
“bike-et list” when speaking to Rory, wouldn’t have been possible without Dr. Oleg
Safir, and the Department of Surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital, part of Sinai Health.

In 2019, Rory returned home from a biking trip in Tuscany with severe pain in his
hips. His local hospital confirmed he would need extensive ortho surgery, but the
options available to him there were not satisfactory. After a referral to Mount Sinai
Hospital, Rory received an extensive exam, x-ray, and meeting with Dr. Oleg Safir,
who confirmed that he would need surgery on both hips.

Dr. Safir was able to do two surgeries over two weeks that caused minimal
disruptions to Rory’s life. He was back to biking a month and a half later; after
undergoing some physical therapy. Since the surgery, he celebrated his 65th
birthday the way he dreamed – with that “bike-et list” trip to the UK.

When approached with the opportunity to support the Surgical Skills Centre at
Mount Sinai – a training centre that has helped more than 225,000 learners acquire
and refine surgical skills through simulation models before direct patient care – he
knew he had to say yes. The centre is shaping the next generation of medical
professionals so that patients like Rory can experience the highest standard of
surgical care.

Meet four centenarians redefining the limits of aging 07/02/2024

Centenarians remain among the fastest-growing segments of Canada’s population. And as Mount Sinai continues to celebrate 100 years of care and discovery, it continues to be a key leader in the field of geriatrics and healthy aging. “We’ve made geriatric care a top priority,” says Dr. Samir Sinha, Director of Geriatrics. “We’re committed to supporting older people in ensuring they receive the right care in the right place at the right time.”

Among Dr. Sinha’s patients are four centenarians who predate even the founding of Mount Sinai. Elizabeth, Sam, William, and Phyllis share their thoughts on healthy aging and the ways they continue to stay active, engaged and curious in our Report to our Community: The Power of Community.

TW: Pregnancy/Infant loss

After Suzanne Pede lost her first child to stillbirth her subsequent two pregnancies were considered high-risk, and she was referred to the Placenta Clinic in the Special Pregnancy Program at Mount Sinai Hospital. Under the care of this incredible team, including Drs. John Kingdom and Rory Windrim, Suzanne successfully gave birth to two rainbow babies: a son in 2012 and a daughter in 2015.

Driven by a desire to help families mark important moments, Suzanne started Cuddle for Keeps, making personalized, hand-crafted keepsake bears in support of neonatal, maternal and mental health. From celebrating the joy of a new life to honoring the memory of a lost child or offering support during challenging times, these bears serve as symbols of love, resilience, and hope.

With a portion of each sale going to support these critical areas of care at Sinai Health, Suzanne is proud to be giving back to the hospital that played a pivotal role in her journey toward motherhood.

“Sinai’s expertise and dedication to maternal and neonatal care are invaluable,” says Suzanne. “By supporting Sinai, I am helping to ensure that other women and families receive the same level of care and support.”

This is the story of the Gibbons Family.

Six years after Lauren and Joseph discovered that their twins had developed a fatal condition called twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome, they returned to the Newton Glassman Charitable Foundation Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Mount Sinai Hospital, where against the odds, the family of two became a happy family of four.

The NICU doctors, nurses and staff were overjoyed to be reunited with the family. And to make their visit extra special, we had some surprises up our sleeves.

Mount Sinai 100 Chairs - Dr. Gerald Baker 05/22/2024

The late Dr. Gerald Baker pioneered new dental techniques in Canada and was a true trailblazer in his field. He inaugurated the use of titanium implants in North America and trained hundreds of oral surgeons in the procedure. Meet the Gibbons Family.

"At just 17 weeks into my pregnancy, we discovered that one of my twins, Elijah, was not growing at a healthy rate – and unlikely to survive. Ultrasounds showed that he was far too small, his umbilical too thin and he was donating most of his blood and nutrients to his identical twin, Jakoby.

Joe, my husband, and I faced an impossible choice: sacrifice Elijah to ensure Jakoby’s survival, or do nothing and neither would survive. Thankfully, we were referred to Dr. Greg Ryan, a world leading surgeon and Head of the Fetal Medicine Unit at Mount Sinai Hospital, and he gave us an alternative – and provided us hope."

Over the years, Jacqueline has been a longstanding hospital foundation supporter. She knows that Hennick Bridgepoint is a special place and is a proud member of the remarkable community. The Prasad Family Foundation focuses on health, education and community organizations that directly benefit those accessing the services. every dollar donated will make a difference in ensuring that the most fragile newborns can access state-of-the-art incubators - so they can get their best chance at a healthy start.

It's time to rethink everything you've heard about menopause and hormone replacement therapy (HRT).

On the podcast Aging Powerfully with Melissa Grelo, Sinai Health's own Dr. Wendy Wolfman discusses the 2002 Women's Health Initiative study, the results of which drastically and negatively altered the way doctors prescribed hormone therapy and the way women received menopause care for decades. Its findings seemed to link hormone therapy and breast cancer, or did it?

Over 20 years since the study's results were released, the scientific and medical community have taken a closer look at what the study actually found and has since come to very different conclusions. Unfortunately, the fears surrounding hormone therapy use have persisted, leaving millions of women suffering through menopause needlessly.

Dr. Wendy Wolfman is a world-renowned medical leader, heading up the Menopause Clinic and Mature Women's Health Program at Mount Sinai Hospital. Our campaign aims to establish the Centre for Mature Women's Health, a centre of excellence that will address the entire spectrum of health challenges that women face as they age.
