Great side by side last night, asking the question: can an Ontario Cab compete with a Cali cab in the same price range? While they were both excellent wines, the 2020 reserve cab sauv from was the unanimous preference (3-0) in a blind tasting. The stags leap was lovely but the choice was clear.

Really enjoyed this beautiful "Loved by Lu" from last night. Slightly off-dry but not enough to bother the 'bone dry only' crowd. *cough cough my wife cough cough*

It complimented our Italian Sausage Arrabiata Linguine perfectly... would've taken a pic but with a 7 month old around the food shots fall way down the list of priorities.

Great sipper on its own but best paired with spicy food or spicy weather.

Enjoyed their aptly and unaptly named 2018 Reserve Red last night. Unaptly named because it's actually their entry level Bordeaux Blend. Aptly named because it would pass for a 'Reserve Wine' in a blind tasting... easily.

40% cab franc, 30% cab sauv, 20% merlot, 10% malbec... all estate grown and aged for 12 months in French and American oak. Lots of dark fruits, mocha, vanilla, some herbal notes and pleasantly refreshing. Just lovely.

If the question is "who makes the best full-bodied wines in Ontario?"... there aren't many that belong in the conversation with Icellars.

How familiar are you with Domaine Queylus?

My assessment is that they are probably making the most "French" wine in Canada. Winemaker Kelly Mason is a phenom and also makes wine for and .

Bordeaux blends are huge, with incredible structure and built to last decades.
Pinots are sublime; focused and ripe, yet classic and terrior driven.
Chardonnays are powerful and elegant.

Domaine Queylus is truly one of the very top producer in Ontario. Their wines sell out regularly and quickly.

Cuvée Winona and homemade Fettuccine and Meatballs. It doesn't get more comforting than this.

The Cuvée Winona is 83% Merlot, 17% Syrah. Not a common blend but it works so well - smooth and supple merlot with a bit of attitude and spice from the syrah.

Had a great visit to the other day and definitely need to highlight a few of the amazing things she's doing (other than being Sue-Ann Staff)

Her Gamay is on the lighter, red-fruit end of the gamay spectrum, which I love. Very floral and a nice peppery finish. Just beautiful 👍

Bold Statement Alert: Her 2020 Pinot Grigio is the best I've had in Ontario. So pure and balanced with notes of apple, pear and a nice flinty minerality. It's just a perfect wine!

Mabel's VCR is so Sue-Ann! Certainly the only Vionier, Chardonnay, Riesling blend I've ever had. Big and bold from the viognier, smooth mid-palate from chardonnay and a beautiful acidity from the riesling.

She's always experimenting and pushing the envelope ie unique blends and aging her wines in different barrels. But also knows when the best next move is to do nothing at all and get it in the bottle.

She has a massive portfolio and it's such a pleasure to explore the diversity of her wines. Oh yeah, and she's also just one of the most pleasant people you'd ever want to be around.

I have to admit, I'd been sleeping on until recently. I always knew they were a quality producer but I didn't appreciate the extent. I'm absolutely blown away by the breadth and depth of their line-up. It seems that there's nothing they aren't making really well and across a great range of price-points.

Enjoyed Frank, Cab Franc and Narcissist, Riesling recently and I mean really really enjoyed them!

Frank is a beauty that brings all the typical vegetal and graphite flavours of Cab Franc with a little extra heft and dark fruit than is typical of the region.

Narcissist almost got downed by my wife and I before I got the shot off! Under $20 and endlessly drinkable. I'm sure the Somms out there can explain better than I can why green apple, honey and petrol taste so damn good together!

Recently enjoyed not one but two phenomenal and NEW under $20 wines from .

Outspoken unoaked chardonnay and Pompous pinot noir. Both are very direct, clean and delicious examples of region and varietal. Sometimes you just don't need or want any more!!
