On Saturday, October 26 (2 to 4 PM), join us and Exhibition Curator Diego Ventura Puac-Coyoy () for an insightful tour of “Beyond the Vanishing Maya: Voices of a Land in Resistance.” The exhibition showcases textiles, ceramics, jewelry, and contemporary Maya art on equal footing, challenging colonial hierarchies and highlighting the enduring vibrancy of Maya culture.
This exhibition brings together works from the Ventura Puac-Coyoy Collection—the first Indigenous contemporary art collection curated by an Indigenous family in Latin America—and the Textile Museum of Canada’s collection, offering a powerful dialogue between tradition and modernity. By presenting these works together, the exhibition powerfully challenges the erasure of Indigenous and women’s art, amplifying Mayan creativity—as a force of resistance, self-determination, and ongoing cultural affirmation.
All proceeds from the ticket sales go to support the Textile Museum’s programming. If this price is a barrier for you, but you’d still like to participate, please email us ([email protected]).

Stickers are back in the Textile Museum Shop by popular demand! We've restocked some of your favourite animal hooked rug stickers 🐎, and added some new favourites from our Collection to the mix.
Introducing Chinese Festival Hat stickers: featuring children's hats from the late 19th to early 20th century. As shared by our Collection staff, these hats, embodying the shapes of animals, or decorated with auspicious symbols, were worn by Chinese children to protect them from evil spirits and to ensure their future successes. Animals were understood to bestow unique abilities such as strength and power, and would also protect children. These hats were given to mark special occasions during the child’s development, such as birthdays, New Year’s celebrations and the Dragon Boat festival.
You can see these hats and more on our Collection website at https://bit.ly/3L40BMn.

We’re launching a community fundraiser to support our vision to grow original and groundbreaking exhibitions at the Textile Museum of Canada, starting this October with Beyond the Vanishing Maya: Voices of a Land in Resistance. You can help make possible the transformational experience and impact of stories told by Maya curators and artists through textile art and belongings.
Beyond the Vanishing Maya is the first exhibition of Maya art in Canada to be curated by a member of the Maya community and will explore themes of self-determination, spirituality and dissidence, as well as bust the myth that the Maya are only an ancient civilization. Curated by Diego Ventura Puac-Coyoy, it will highlight the evolution of Maya art, which has existed since time immemorial, surviving colonization and genocidal violence to evolve as a vibrant cultural expression of resistance.
Our goal is $20,000 and all funds raised will go towards bringing this incredible exhibition to life. Every donation $25 and over will receive a full tax receipt and name recognition on the website. We welcome donations of any amount and are grateful for all your support.
