New Hope Springs in Malawi: A Journey to Water Security for Elistina and her Grandchildren. 03/22/2024

Meet Elistina Godfrey, an 80-year-old grandmother who faced the arduous task of fetching water over two kilometres away for her four grandchildren, risking their health to water-borne diseases. This daily struggle was not just a physical burden but also a constant worry for the safety and well-being of her family, underlining a critical problem many in her community faced: the lack of access to clean, safe water.

The introduction of a new borehole by Amref Health Africa in Malawi Project, conveniently located just three hundred meters from her home, marked a pivotal moment in Elistina's life. This solution drastically reduced the time and risk involved in water collection, transforming a perilous task into a manageable part of her day and significantly enhancing her family's quality of life.

Elistina's story highlights the profound impact that access to clean water brings to communities. Watch Elistina's story to see how, through the generous support of our donors, Amref is making clean water more accessible to communities in Malawi.

With your support, we continue to expand sustainable water access in communities.

As we mark , we are reminded that water is the essence of life, a finite resource critical for the survival of all living things. However, with the growing challenges of climate change, increased levels of population, and urbanisation, the availability of clean and safe water is becoming increasingly threatened. To ensure a sustainable future, we must sow the seeds of change and adopt innovative solutions to create a water-wise world.

🙌🏾Community health workers. These are the wonderful folks the world can’t turn without, or at least this is true in Zambia.

Meet Josephine, for example. She has been the backbone of providing community health support to mothers like Hope Thabitha and baby Banda - in her local community in Chifubu, Ndola District, in Zambia.

💞“What is in my heart is the love I have for my community. I don’t want my people to suffer, the women and children especially. “Josephine says.

She knows too well that she is the critical link between mothers and the formal health system.

Josephine is among 1300 community health workers trained in Respective Maternal Care through Amref Health Africa’s Closing The Gap Project. During the training, she learned about providing health education and behaviour change motivation, including ways to support mothers to be able to follow health recommendations.

This is especially useful for pregnant mothers who may sometimes delay making critical decisions that could affect their health and that of their unborn child.

💪🏾Community health workers like Josephine are the cornerstone of a competent community health network. They play a crucial role in health promotion, disease prevention, and referral of community members to the formal health system.

🎯With your support and partnership, Amref Health Africa aims to make Community Health Workers accessible to everyone, everywhere in Africa. So that mothers like Hope can get lifesaving care when they need it, where they need it for the best health outcomes.

🎉As we celebrate 50 yrs of Canadian support, we invite you to journey with us for the next 50 yrs of impact. Follow along as we share stories from the people and communities creating lasting health change in Africa!
