UHN News is looking at some of the top stories of 2023.
A study by a team led by Ajmera Transplant Centre at UHN researchers found that storing donor lungs for transplant at 10C markedly increases the length of time the organ can live outside the body.
โThe clinical impact of this study is huge,โ says lead author Dr. Marcelo Cypel, Surgical Director of the Transplant Centre at UHN and a surgeon within UHN's Sprott Surgery Department.

This week, University Health Network celebrated the Local Impact Awards and the 2023 UHN Global Impact Awards, as a part of the inaugural TeamUHN Week of Gratitude.
This is peer recognition from the best hospital in Canada and one of the top five in the world. And, there's no higher praise that any of us on the staff can realize in that connection.
From a record 113 nominations, winners of the 2023 UHN Local Impact Awards were announced at a ceremony in Schatz Hall at the Michener Institute of Education at UHN.
Dr. Brad Wouters, UHN's Executive Vice President of Science and Research, said since its inception in 2004, the Global Impact Award has honoured "a real who's who of giants in the field of medical research." We are proud to honour three UHN scientists by adding them to this impressive list. Dr. Murray Urowitz, who retired from UHN's Schroeder Arthritis Institute at Toronto Western Hospital in 2022; the late Dr. Richard (Dick) Hill, whose long history at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre began in the 1960s; and the late Dr. Wayne Johnston, a longtime surgeon at UHN's Peter Munk Cardiac Centre, were recognized in a ceremony at the Michener Institute of Education at UHN.
Inspired support leads to exceptional impact. As we approach the holiday season, your support to UHN and UHN Foundation is fundamental for us to drive innovation forward and continue to make key contributions in the world of heathcare.
