The Soldiers' Tower Memorial Room and Carillon
The Soldiers’ Tower and the Soldiers' Tower Carillon commemorate those lost in the World Wars. The bells range in weight from 23 pounds to the bourdon's 4 tons.
To commemorate the service of 5,300 University of Toronto students, staff, faculty, and alumni who participated in the military and auxiliary forces of Canada and its allies during the First World War, the Soldiers’ Tower was built between 1919-1924, and in 1927 the Carillon was dedicated with its first 23 bells. In 1976, the Carillon was rededicated at its present size with the addition of 28 bells.
On Christmas Eve, there will be an informal recital from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM. It will include both traditional and secular pieces. Please message this page if you have any special requests.
Happy Christmas!

In the midst of the Great War, Parry composed this hymn to several stanzas from William Blake’s 1808 poem Milton beginning with, “And did those feet in ancient time.” Sir Edward Elgar produced the famous orchestration.
