In case the transplant warriors and their friends / family are curious:
"Historically, when a kidney is recovered, it is placed in a sterile cooler of ice to keep it viable in transport by vehicle or airplane to the transplant center... With the new Federal Aviation Administration-approved transportation of the perfusion pump, the kidney has zero cold ischemic time because it stays perfused on the pump throughout the entire journey to the transplant operating room."

ID: A man with glasses in a suit sits in his lab: physician Frederick Banting. The text reads, “What breed of dogs do scientists have? Labs!”
On this day in 1921 along with med student Charles Best, he succeeded in isolating the hormone insulin from the pancreas of dogs in their lab at the University of Toronto, thus, leading to the creation of insulin injection treatments for diabetes. Along with Professor John MacLeod they would win the Nobel Prize in 1923.

Whether subconsciously or consciously, we are taught from a young age that our health and our value are based on our body size. The truth is health is hardly associated let alone correlated with ones size, yet it’s the dominant narrative.
That begs us to (un)learn a few things:
-The association of body type with behaviours (e.g., endomorphs are sloppy and lazy) came from psychologists like William Sheldon trying to create a theory of criminology. None of their research was reliable or made it into modern science. On the other hand, it led to human atrocities like eugenics and the persistent stereotyping today.
-There is literally no research that shows long-term significant weight-loss is possible.
-Often times researchers skew weak correlation to make it look like cause and effect medically: for instance, the weight-loss prescription minimally lowered blood glucose levels in prediabetics; so weight-loss becomes the gold star, when really it was the discussion of the (genetic/environmental) condition reducing stigma stress, behavioural changes, dietary knowledge, family support, peer groups etc.
-Weight loss not only correlates to reduced mortality, but also increased mortality! Diets lead to death. Shame and guilt lead to deadly behaviour, etc. There is lots research we can bring in but it is too much to unpack here. Michelle’s article begins to hint at the emotional/psychological repercussions of our emphasize on body size.
-Safety and comfort can best be created by more valid assessments such as bone mass and muscle strength which too few health settings are equipped to do, plus thorough intentional counselling for overall (longer/consistent) well-being
Thank you Michelle Doyle for sharing this personal story.

Do you think about velocity when training?
This study makes practical sense. If you are working at submaximal levels, but being smart about how your body feels that day then you will likely be more effective in the long-run. I like that it takes the ego and shame out of the equation - so often we follow numbers on a program but the body is not cut and past.
It's a small sample of experienced lifters though. What do you think? Do you have an app to track velocity? Should we try this?

Happy Pride Toronto!!!
This last year has been one of the best of my career so THANK YOU. Roughly 50% of my client base is LGBTQ+. The rest are allies I can be myself around.
Something really special I witnessed recently is two clients discover they are non-binary and change their pronouns. Because when you are comfortable with who YOU are, others are free to discover who THEY are.
I could not have imagined all this 8 years ago. I had to contend with a lot of haters. Sometimes I still do. I can be my own obstacle a lot as well. Yet here I am, one of the most highly qualified, recognizable and successful movement and rehabilitative PTs in the area.
So my advice is to always come back to your goals and values. Have a clear vision and stick to it no matter what. And in situations where you feel uneasy, keep the empowering mantras flowing in your head and you will get through it! You have a story, therefore YOU are 100% worthy of being appreciated.
And to the haters, suck it!

"...we need to become consciously aware of the impact that the social vampires in our lives are having on us. Once we have done so, we can take the time to remember the good they have previously brought into our lives, as well as re-energise ourselves after such encounters."
"As McMahon puts it: 'If a social vampire is draining your social cup every single time you meet, without noticing the effect it has on you or acknowledging your feelings at all, then it’s time for a break.' "
The Rise of the Social Vampire, and How to Handle the One in Your Life Psychologists say that, if you don’t know who the social vampire is in your friendship group, there’s a very high chance it’s you.

Aggression can be caused by complex health conditions (e.g., pervasive autism), or merely poor mental health (e.g., sleeping disorder).
We know that feelings which are not expressed end up trapped – physiologically - in the tissues of the body where they can then lead to other health impairments. Physical expression is one of the best ways to let those feelings out, but not at the cost of harming others. This is why art therapies and athletics are such important and successful stabilizers of the mind (and body).
The irony of Mr. Smith’s actions is that they happened amidst being honoured for a film about 2 intense athletic journeys.
The other point I want to make is that artists and the public often have a reactionary approach to these incidents/spectacles which regard one’s mental health - pointing fingers and recapturing headlines. We become further alienated, unable to be agents in our own lives, because most of us do not have the resources of Hollywood celebrities. Further, we receive no guidance on how to help ourselves and our family members through challenging emotional turmoil.
If you are local, here are some resources for help ranging from community-level to emergency to private help.

Was it all just a dream? Unlikely. 2 years do seem to have come and gone. I’ve been racking my brain for weeks trying to think of how to honour this moment. But I guess we are still in this moment - this collection of many small moments of hardship and triumph. I’m SO SO SO proud of you all; for your achievements big and small.

Now that I have your attention, let’s talk. What started as an animal joke spurred some reflection. Previously called impotence, we can see how erectile dysfunction was associated with the socio-cultural, heterosexual, religious notion that a p***s means power and impregnation. In reality one can be adept sexually but infertile (and vice-versa - now that’s 🤣except if you are the victim of a lousy lover 😲) Plus there are many causes of ED to not be ashamed about it:
-Nitric Oxide insufficiency
-diabetes
-high cholesterol
-low HDL
-physical abnormalities
-syphilis
-arterial or venous obstructions
-neurological disorders
-surgery
-testosterone deficiency
-drugs (medical or illegal)
-alcohol
-anxiety or depression
-fear of causing pregnancy
-fear of STDs
-religious inhibitions
-emotional immaturity
When it comes to infertility specifically, we often see it as a female problem. However Tortora points out, “The seminiferous tubules of the te**es are sensitive to many factors—x-rays, infections, toxins, malnutrition, and higher-than-normal scrotal temperatures—that may cause degenerative changes and produce male sterility.”
According to John Hopkins Medicine, ED can affect over 50% of men over 40!! And 322 million people world-wide are expected to be impacted by 2025. But guys don’t like to talk about these things.

The tensegrity model shows us how integrated the body systems and structures are, and gives us a perfect picture of why fascia stretching is so important as it encompasses them.
Just think if you have had an abdominal surgery, a c-section, hip injury or even stiffness in the thigh muscle and how that might translate to your shoulder, neck, and TMJ. This source of pain is often overlooked, or misunderstood.

As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, respecting the dignity of each person who rests on my treatment table has always been at the heart of my practice.
Minorities and people who do not fit the dominant discourse or status quo in society have too often been the victims of abuse.
One way I make my practice inclusive and affirming of all identities is to put you at the centre, first and foremost, of all treatment decisions. With a careful explanation of the techniques that could be used for the problem at hand you can feel safe to decide on proceeding or not, and alter anything at any time should it not feel right.
So don't hesitate. There are only a few more days left to book a full body stretch which could make all the difference in feeling pain-free and flexible as we head into a bigger better 2022.

An unfounded FACT or piece of information is JUST your EGO speaking.
😳😳
I see a lot of people battling out on social media who has the most valid information when it comes to public health, medicine, or exercise. But what if you were never taught where to find valid sources to begin with and how to evaluate them?
💡💡
Imagine if you could help yourself and others by accessing specific quality information.
🙌🙌
I put together a brief simple guide. You are very welcome.
👊🏾👊🏾👊🏾
Find Quality Evidence HERE – best of all it’s mostly FREE:
➡️PubMed
➡️ERIC
➡️CHID
➡️PEDro
➡️Trip
➡️CHID
Some Factors to consider:
➡️Reliability: Are you confident the experiment could be repeated with same results?
➡️Validity: Do the results reflect what the study intended to measure? Do the results apply to the context you are discussing, population you are working with as the reader?
➡️Bias: Was there a control group? Were the samples randomized? Are there conflicts of interest identified?
➡️Blinding: Do the researchers or participants know details that can impact the results?
➡️Results: Are there a lot of details? Were all participants accounted for?
➡️References: Do the authors acknowledge other conversations/research on the topic? Do they mention shortcomings? Do they mention areas of opportunity moving forward?
➡️Publisher: Are they reputable in the field? Do they accept all research or only research with positive results?
➡️Author: Was the research conducted by a student, research assistant, or Doctor? What are their credentials? Are their skills relevant to the research? (Again don’t crucify me but reading gifs and memes on a topic does not make you the subject matter expert).
➡️Currency: Is the research

FREE hydrotherapy worth THOUSANDS of dollars
Ice massage falls under the umbrella of cold hydrotherapy or cryotherapy; the lesser known brother of ice packs. An ice massage is dynamic! Ice massage helps to reduce inflammation, local pain, or swelling. Indirectly, it can help increase mental alertness and organ activity.
Sore after a rigorous weightlifting session or a deep tissue massage? Tired of having to awkwardly balance an ice pack on your joint for 20 minutes? This only takes 5min. Simply rub ice in an overlapping circular motion over the affected area. Catch drips with towels.
