Last week, five students from five different campuses truly impressed everyone during the international final of the Global Student Entrepreneurship Contest (GSEC) held in Montreal.

We are happy to celebrate our alumna, Griselda Normansah, for her incredible project "Boba Mania," which earned her an Honourable Mention in the RGD 2023 Student Awards for Retail Design! ​

Boba Mania is a conceptual bubble tea store brand with a unique spin on the classic Taiwanese drink. Drawing inspiration from American 80's retro diners and games, the visuals create an atmosphere that attracts people of all ages who share a passion for fun aesthetics and retro entertainment in a nostalgic setting.​

With the slogan “dangerously addictive,” Boba Mania invites you to indulge in flavors like Stardust, Supermoon, Cosmos, and Spooky Cookie, all while enjoying retro vibes and modern aesthetics. ​

The project was developed during the Portfolio 1 project class led by instructor Giulia Bonforte in her final quarter. ​

Nisien's award-winning projects include "Singapore City Branding" from her Advanced Design Studio class and "Saira Spice Shop" developed for her portfolio.​

🔹 Singapore Lights Logo: Inspired by the iconic Supertree structures of Gardens by the Bay, this logo captures Singapore's multicultural, interconnected, and green essence. The gradient imitates the Supertrees lighting up at night, highlighting Singapore's vibrant and unique side.​

🔹 Saira Spice Shop: This concept follows young Saira, who discovers her emotions through the magical properties of spices from various Middle Eastern regions, symbolizing the shop's mission to support emotional well-being and self-discovery.​

The Indigo Awards exist to encourage and promote creativity, seeking exceptional designs that make unique contributions to the digital world. ​

Last month, our talented Graphic Design student Pranit Singh was tasked with developing the festival branding for "Vaisakhi Vancouver," an annual springtime festival in the Punjabi Market neighborhood of Vancouver. Inspired by the vibrant cultural heritage of the event, Pranit's design captures the essence of celebration and community in a contemporary and playful manner.​

The marigold, a symbol of prosperity and joy in South Asian traditions, serves as the central motif for the logo variations. The logo features:​

🥁 A dhol drum in the orange symbol representing creativity.​

💜 A set of hearts in the purple symbol representing service.​

🕌 A gurudwara dome in the blue symbol representing divinity. The custom hand-lettered logotype, inspired by Gurmukhi Script, adds a warm and personal touch to the brand identity.​

For wayfinding, Pranit designed three icons to guide attendees throughout the festival. These icons include:​

🎶 A traditional bhangra turban for music.​

☕ A glass of chai for market booths.​

🎨 A painter's brush with a paisley for spotting the murals at the market.​

The promotional flyers adopt a playful and inviting tone, featuring dynamic typography and repeated illustrations of cardamoms, traditional bhangra turbans, and iconic Punjabi Market street signs. Each flyer highlights different aspects of the festival experience, from live music to culinary delights, encouraging participation in the joyous celebration of Vaisakhi in Vancouver.​

Current Trends in Game Practice" is an elective course available for the Game Art & Design programs. Over the course of 11 weeks, students are challenged to come up with an original idea for a board or card game. They must prototype, test, write their own rules, and gather all the pieces to assemble a final game. This year, our class had the honor of presenting their final prototypes to a large audience by participating in the prestigious Terminal City Tabletop Convention. With thousands in attendance, our students represented the school and demonstrated their masterpieces to the public.​
