Have you seen the new artwork at Langara–49th Ave Station? “Invisible Garden” is a large-scale work of painted steel that refers to the weeds growing through the pavement cracks around the station. The piece was initially designed by Eden Veaudry and produced collaboratively by Langara Fine Arts students in the Public Art Studio Practice course in spring 2024.

Created to call attention to the strangeness and beauty of these humble plants, it allows passersby to cultivate a deeper relationship to the natural environment.Check out “Invisible Garden” as well as “Out of the Tunnel”, the kaleidoscopic vinyl wall collage also made by Langara Fine Arts students.

Standup comedy for mental health? 'It's one of my anchors,' says one veteran participant 04/26/2024

What’s so funny about mental health? As far as Stand Up for Mental Health is concerned, everything. Comedian and Continuing Studies (CS) instructor David Granirer is the creator of the Stand Up for Mental Health Comedy Society, a troupe of comics and up-and-comers with mental health issues who use stand-up as a way of building confidence and fighting public stigma.

“The confidence you get from stand-up comedy is so huge,” says Granirer. “Here you are on stage and you’re telling people all about your struggles and the worst things about you, and there’s laughing and applauding, people telling you how great you are.

In addition to the Stand Up For Mental Health Comedy Society, David teaches stand-up comedy in the CS Performing Arts program. The eight-week Stand-Up Comedy Clinic course teaches joke formats, performance techniques, ways to generate killer material, how to handle jokes that bomb, and more. The next iteration of the class begins on June 6, 2024.

Happy International Mother Earth Day!

Today we remind ourselves that – now more than ever – we need a sustainable economy that works for both people and the planet.

Langara faculty members, in collaboration with the City of Richmond - Local Government, are exploring circular production practices in our Makerspace. They are upcycling post-consumer denim into a durable new material and upholstering a donated couch that was headed for the landfill.

Through this project, student research assistants are confronting issues like overconsumption and overproduction, improving our local environment and community, and gaining experience delivering work to a real-world client.

The project is made possible through Langara’s Applied Research Centre, which providesd financial and logistical support. Many of our cultures and systems train us to be consumers rather than creators, caretakers, and re-users. By developing and testing solutions for issues that impact us directly, these researchers are finding alternatives and offering new possibilities.

This is just one example of how Langara is working towards a more sustainable future.

Tilly Nelson’s innovative exhibition “We’re already here, it’s time you realized” is an incredibly moving series of photographs that tells the stories of individuals with disabilities and visual differences. Her work focuses on increasing visibility and representation of people with disabilities in the workplace, or—in the case of some of the younger models—their career dreams and goals for the future. These images will touch your heart as you feel the photographer’s passion and love for her work.

A commercial photographer and media creator, Tilly has worked with people with disabilities from a young age and her fight for representation and inclusion has only grown. Through her lens, she empowers voices that are often overlooked, capturing each individual with authenticity and respect.

See the exhibit until Apr 15 in the Science and Technology (T) Building foyer. Learn more at https://bit.ly/3vSjiAg.
