I am still buzzing, and I don’t think I am alone!
Last Thursday night, we celebrated our 20th PechaKucha Night, after a 4 year break AND “we are back, baby!”
⚡️The evening featured 12 stunning presentations by 12 amazing creative leaders, artists, visionaries, storytellers + changemakers!
The FEEDBACK on the night (and since) has BEEN INCREDIBLE!
It seems “the people have spoken” and they want more PK Nights!
💛 And we’ve heard you, we will bring you PKN Volume 21 in the FALL ~ with date and venue TBA!
👏The theatre was almost full, with approx 170 seats occupied, and the audience was so special, hanging onto every word from our Presenters and supporting them with their silence, their laughter and their cheers!

ANDREW POLANYI | Executive Director | Ocean Aid
✧ Andrew Polanyi grew up in Toronto and as a kid, each summer he would fly out to Vancouver Island to go salmon fishing with his grandparents. From spending time on the ocean, he got to experience seeing whales, dolphins, birds, and fish all living in harmony. Andrew developed a deep connection with the ocean and decided to move to Victoria to study Software Engineering at UVic. When he graduated last year, he founded Ocean AID to use his software skills to help solve ocean problems. Ocean AID works to help solve the global problem of ghost fishing gear, which is abandoned, lost, or discarded fishing gear that continues to kill countless amounts of fish and marine life.

✧ Tamara MacIntyre brings over two decades of experience in holistic medicine with doctorates in chiropractic and natural medicine, as well as a Master's degree in neuroscience. With a focus on fostering open dialogue around mortality, aging, illness, and death, Tamara empowers individuals to navigate life's transitions with agency. As a death educator and client advocate, she offers end-of-life education, individualized care planning, and client advocacy, alongside her work as a sustainable coffin maker.

Passionate about translating changemaking ideas into meaningful impact, she champions innovative solutions driving profound societal change. Through her work at Ideas for Impact Sustainability Agency, Joanna shapes strategies to address new climate realities and advance sustainability practices.
She is the Chair of the Scale Institute, Executive in Residence at the University of Victoria Innovation Centre and Impact Investing Fellow with the Impact Investing Hub, Lead at W Venture for Women Entrepreneurs, a Trauma of money practitioners, and

EMMA GILCHRIST | Editor-in-Chief • Executive Director | The Narwhal
✧ Emma Gilchrist is a reporter, editor, public speaker and spreadsheet-keeper. She started her journalism career more than 15 years ago and co-founded The Narwhal with Carol Linnitt in 2018. Emma grew up in a small town in northwestern Alberta where she saw firsthand the important role resource development plays in Canadian communities.
In 2015, Mount Royal University honoured Emma with an alumni award for her work reimagining Canada’s media landscape. And in 2017, Emma was recognized by Canada’s Clean50 for building a “powerhouse environmental investigative journalism outlet.”
When she’s not tethered to her computer, Emma is happiest reading a book or surfing the waves of Vancouver Island (not simultaneously).

✧ Ariel is a multifaceted creative, whose diverse background spans from musician, photographer, and horse trainer to design manager and flower farmer. Her farm dream traces back to a childhood spent on the Gulf Islands, where industrious parents instilled values of community leadership, environmental
action, and self-sufficiency.
After many years living abroad, Ariel and her family moved back to BC during the pandemic. Whatstarted as a desire to unplug and return to elemental work evolves daily. The garden keeps growing, the community expanding, and the farm has taken on a life of its own, employing a dedicated set ofwonderful people and offering medicine in the form of plants, beauty, and connection to our localcommunity.

is a physical theatre company specializing in mask performance and visual storytelling. Our work is performed in full-face mask, a wordless, whimsical form which audiences have described as watching living animation and the CBC calls “Pure magic.” In stories that are at turns hilarious and profound, we WONDERHEADS make it our business to step beyond words and ignite the hearts and imaginations of every audience member!
The co-founding ‘heads’ of Wonderheads are Kate Braidwood and Andrew Phoenix, who came together in 2009 resolved to conjure a little magic and wonder into the world. ✧ Broken Rhythms Dance Company Broken Rhythms Dance Company s a not-for-profit independent dance company founded in 2011 under the artistic direction of DYANA SONIK-HENDERSON. The company was created to showcase the unique style of Rhythmical Contemporary, to provide local artists with performance and training opportunities, and to support and develop the Canadian arts community. Broken Rhythms has created and produced numerous original works such as SPARK, GRIM, SEVEN, UNIVERSAL HORRORS, THYSELF , INTERNAL RHYTHMS, INTO THE WIRE, 1,000 PIECES OF ∏ , ABOVE ME, and CHIARO:SCURO AND MOST RECENTLY 'KNOTTED' which made the big jump this April from a smaller theatre to the one of Victoria's largest theatres, at the McPherson Theatre!
✧ Dyana's presentation is sure to be very interesting and inspired, with her talk covering Π (Pi), neurodiversity and creativity, wow!

PKN 20 PRESENTER SPOTLIGHT: Nicholas Van Buren | CEO of HAVN
Nicholas is a co-founder and CEO of HAVN ~ a floating park-like environment on the edge of Victoria’s Inner Harbour. Lush green spaces, cold pools, hot tubs, and hand-built saunas bring people together for a vibrant self-care experience.

The Nordic-style HAVN (pronounced “hah-vin”) Sauna is built aboard a refurbished 1943 U.S. Navy barge, featuring cedar woodwork made completely out of salvaged driftwood.
“We didn’t want to cut down any old-growth cedar, so we collected logs out of the ocean and milled them all.” says partner and CEO Nicholas Van Buren.
